I couldn't agree more. Creating the sound of an uninterrupted bass line is its pursuit and as tempting as it can be having a musical sensitivity and good phrasing will leave the listener plenty satisfied. That being said, I'm so glad we have Charlie Hunter to show us how to REALLY scratch that itch
Damn dude, you're a really great player, very inspiring. I've been getting more and more into jazz within the last few years, I really dig this traditional guitar sound that you're going for. I think there's a lot of guys going more for that new post-bop style like Mike Moreno and Kurt Rosenwinkel, great players but its good to hear the chord melody style still alive. I love Chord Chemistry!
Despite it not working for every example you showed, I think it really did sound awesome for the slower and hybrid picked bits you played. Great playing throughout!
One thing I think helps with Gilad's style is that he's strikes me more of a harmonic rather than rhythmic player. This is especially so when you think of how much he uses the Freeze pedal to build harmonic textures which his bass and solo lines subsequently move around in. That's a very different style than what you seem to do in this video, which involves tighter harmonic structures moving together quickly. In other words, while he tends to do summits and valleys at the same time, you tend to be a single stone rolling-in which case, your Sisyphus avatar is very fitting.
If you want the bass notes to sustain longer with out having to hold the note with finger try putting a delay pedal in front of the octave pedal , or a sustain pedal. Just a thought. I havent tried or anything 🤘🏼
I picked one up to try for a sans-bass gig in a couple of weeks. After 5 minutes I pretty much came to the same conclusions as you, that I must significantly change my playing style to keep the bass from dropping out during chords/solos in poly mode. I have 45 days to decide whether or not I keep it. i can see the benefit of using it solely for fat soloing in a full band situation, although I'm on the fence at the moment. Getting ready try #2. Thanks for your honest and insightful demo. Cheers from So Cal.
I think it's great for bands where you have another comping instrument, or someone that can take bass (like piano or organ) but also would appreciate a break from time to time.
Thanks for making this video, I think I still want one, but just for pre-arranged accompaniment, it definitely sounds kinda weird when you just start improvising.
Thanks for commenting! I’ve actually ended up finding a whole range of uses for this pedal, including looping and playing in groups where I can ‘swap bass’ with another instrument. I think my solo guitar playing is evolving to a point where it may be useful for that too, but what I say in this video I think still stands. Anyway, I’d get one and give it a go!
You've saved me a lot of time. The curve seemed to be to learn to play as well as you -gulp! - then learn how to use the pedal, then learn how to integrate it, then realise it doesn't really integrate, then realise the time spent on the pedal wasn't so productive after all and the pedal itself has to go back onto Ebay....Enjoyed your playing as always!
man I love your style. I see you got a lot of books behind you. Is there any book or methods you recommend for a guitarist like me who is trying to get to this level? thanks
Assunto De Guitarista Thanks man! I’m not really much of a method books guy. Mostly I learned by listening, playing and working stuff out. But I do have a video on my channel if you search taking about some books that have influenced me - should be able to find it on my channel
Guitar sounds lush.. I have the pedal and use it in a Blues setting sparingly on certain songs. I think it's best used for simple bass lines or to add general beef to the tone in a solo setting.
I just got one of these. My issue is that with certain frequencies the octave-down effect only sounds for about a half second at most, then goes back up to regular pitch. Sometimes it happens only with low F#, G and G# but not with any other notes. Sometimes only C and C# for example. All other notes sustain with the effect indefinitely. It's odd.
@@JazzGuitarScrapbook I don't think so - I think it's just average output. It's an entry-level Korean-made Charvette from like 1990 or so, with a humbucker and 2 single coils. The problem seems a bit better if I use the single coils, bit it's still there. I noticed it was happening less if I picked a single note while grabbing a full chord, which made me theorize that it was caused by interference from the natural vibration of the other five strings that happens when a single strings is picked....?
Kunchang Lee I haven’t tried it. TBH I can’t see how the Poly feature differs. (BTW I’ve been using this pedal a lot. I think my opinion of it has changed.)
Interesting experiment Christian....but as we Kiwis put it....yeah-nahh. [BTW I'm one of the JGF lifers ....I go by "Moonray" there] Tried the OC3 quite a while ago....my findings were much the same as yours. Personally I reckon you have the melody-with-chord thing down nicely with the pick style. What is that pick anyway.....great sound you're getting....pleased to have you showing off your lovely 175 regularly. Forget the pedal thing man......just takes more time and effort that you can spend more profitably building up your rep and if you feel like it, developing your hybrid or full on fingerstyle.
Maybe it’s better to make the low octave really quiet and subtle...or maybe the way to go is ditch the pedal, get some fat strings and tune everything down ala Ted Greene...
Huh, that bass line sounds REALLY synthetic. I don't like it at all. I was thinking about getting the OC3 for exactly by his purpose. But the sound, wow! Not so good. Maybe stick with the POG? I actually have a SY300 that can do it too, but I never use it, such a bear to program.
Your onto somethin' for sure. 'Sounds a tad like an acoustic upright! I do like conventional jazz without all those pretentious twiddley-bits from hard-leftists players. Say! How about a frequency-selective compressor to let your bass sustain parts ring on? I believe there is such a pedal.
I'm not saying you are wrong. However it actually takes a fair amount of planning and editing to put out a really coherent video. (If you doubt me, I suggest trying to record a video lesson yourself - on anything. You'll see what I mean.) So the question for me, with a young family and limited time is: do I want to spend time doing this, or would I rather practice the guitar more and hustle more gigs? At the moment it's the latter. People like Rick Beato, Adam Neely etc do this full time.
Jazz Guitar Scrapbook I am wasting my time with you. Look I know all that, I’m pissed off my time was wasted by watching a video linked in Reverb on a boss octave pedal and it featured for about 10seconds. It’s not really your fault it’s linked probably but I’ve seen a couple of your videos and this is what I think. But then again, I don’t make videos for exactly the reason you say re something for nothing.im too busy working in general and on my own musical development to gaf about some ingrates on the net who’ll talk shit about anything you do or near abouts cos they’re lounge chair legends or whatever. Anyway good playing, nice guitar, time is too valuable to waste.

Could you please explain what you mean in better detail? I’m not being sarcastic or joking- I *think* I know what you mean but I’m not sure

Good point. Yes those pedals are great for that kind of playing (textural/modal/layered.)
Really helpful video and your playing is outstanding. Thanks very much.

Very nice playing. Reminds me so much of my old guitar teacher from decades ago!

@@JazzGuitarScrapbook Thanks, the fact you've stuck with it and implemented it is a good sign. Great playing btw.
Is there a octave pedal that can duplicate a Wes M. type of octaves
The problem is not the octave part, but rather having it sound like a guitar

Weird. Is the guitar low output?

I'd be interested to know how this pedal sounds on folk/singer-songwriter stuff. It could be great for gigs with a percussionist. Any thoughts?
I think it would work fantastically well. I use it with a flat top guitar with one of my projects and it really fills out the sound.
Have you tried the oc5 yet ? If so thoughts ? Do you think it’s an improvement ?

Cheers! Well my pick is a basic 1.5 tortex dunlop or whatever else I pick up. I got tired of losing pricey plectrums :-)

It doesn’t sound like a bass..... It’s best used as a reinforcement to the guitar IMO than a sound in its own right
get a looper pedal, play one chorus compin, loop it, and play your single-note improv
Yeah I kind of don't really like doing that type of thing. It works and is pretty easy to do. I know lots of people do it.

Haha. Not going to happen I'm afraid :-)

It was linked on Reverb? That's cool.
