- Here's me playing Holy War on guitar with Toto at their show during soundcheck in Salt Lake City, Utah. The guys were cool enough to let me come up and play with them and were super nice afterwards, too.

Wow, a dream come true! I met the band members once off stage, fabulous musicians and really nice people.
Totally awesome! Luke looks like a proud papa right there saying look at my boy! Great job young man...chance of a lifetime!
Thanks Mark!
Mark King Been watching this , observing him walk around , you hit the nail on the head , I do think he rather enjoyed it , it is a sincere form of flattery.
What a lucky guy to be able to show his guitar skill in from of the greatest guitarist, Luke, and to play Luke's guitar too.
Lucky? $$$
i have recently discovered this album as my favorite
AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING!!!! Very few people have been given an opportunity to SHINE on stage with one of the truly all time great bands and even fewer would be able to hit a Grand Slam like this young man did! So VERY well done Patrick!!! You also have to give it up for TOTO ....a complete class act all the way!!!!!
Thanks!
What a blessing to be right there with Steve and Joe AND, digging what you were doing. What a moment, thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻✝️
It was really amazing and humbling to see them really digging what I was doing with their music. They were all super nice and complimentary.
It's got to warm the guys' hearts when they realize how many musicians they've influenced. Jeff once described them as a "musician's band" and that's where the joy is :)
They definitely are a musician's band. I'm sure they've influenced generations of musicians, starting from even before Toto was a band! I know I've learned a ton from listening to and watching these guys, and now my friends tell me they hear Luke's influence on my guitar playing.
One of my guitar heroes standing in front of my while I'm playing his guitar.........I would have lost my mind. This is beyond awesome
Thanks man. I felt the same, but the whole band made me feel so comfortable and welcome on stage with them.
With such music, you can almost see these nice flowers grow feeding themselves with good vibes...
i love this video so much ! every time i come back here to see this video and make me smile seeing this moment ! so amazing dude !
Thanks, that's so kind of you!
It’s like that young man who got to play with Billy Joel at Vanderbilt. To go onstage with the world’s greatest musicians and just crush it. Fantastic!!! Not only are the guys in Toto the best ever, they’re incredibly gracious too. Awesome!!!
Thanks! Those guys really were so gracious to let me play with them.
@@JosephFacer Good job. How'd that come about?
Anybody remember the unknown guy who was pulled from the audience at a S.F. Who concert when Keith Moon toppled over?
Townsend: "We're not a band without a drummer. Let the auditions begin!"
And the first guy up killed it. Played the rest of the show...
@@docwill184 Part of their VIP packages on some of their more recent tours was a Q&A during soundcheck, so I just asked if I could play a song with them and they said sure. Paich told me afterwards that Luke never lets people play for that long, which was super nice regardless of whether or not it was true.
I've heard that Who story before, that would be really awesome to get that chance with any band.
I was at that show, VIP and everything. Dang what a night. Those guys can play. And I'm totally jealous, I probably would've crapped myself if I tried to play with them.
Bet you will remember this forever!!!!!
It must have been such an amazing experience playing together with the greatest musicians in the world! Congratulations! :)
It absolutely was, thanks!
I was there! And it was an amazing show again! Stood in the pouring rain the year before!
+Shannon K I was at the show the year before, too. Both were absolutely fantastic, and well worth getting soaked.
Greatest musicians!!!
Absolutely phenomenal for sure
You killed it man! Such a great band and yet so down to earth.
Thanks! They really are super cool guys.
Wow! Awesome!! Very lucky guy.Luke was very generous down to earth..I love luke..
Everyone in the band was very gracious, I was definitely lucky!
I I think this is the best thing that can happen to any band is letting fan come up and play with them that is perfect
It's pretty awesome for the fan that gets to do it, too!
@@JosephFacer Joseph you know as good as me that we have fans of rock bands that can play as good as any professional and that goes with anything but I think if you can play any kind of instrument whether you poor Rich or whatever if you want to make a career out of it you can and it's not hard to do you just got to know how to play now it brings me to this next point and Nextel cup where NASCAR if you go and look most of those guys are family anyway and they got money and that's why they are in Nextel cup so if you don't have money it is very hard to get into nascar I know this we have a Trailer manufacturing plant in the middle of NASCAR country we have a guy that works in our shop he is 25 years old he started racing when he was 13 years old I know his parents he has won over 112 dirt races he has won every race with a car that he bought for $400 now my company bought the Motors that he runs a they are not cheap eather now if he put into music what he has into racing he would be playing in a band there is no doubt in my mind and see in NASCAR if you got money you can go where you want to go now if you don't have much money and you can play music you can go far so I guess I should say and music it don't matter who you are just as long as you can play you can make it a long way but a Nextel cup it's all about the money so yeah I think it's excellent that Luke let that guy come up and do a sound check form you would never see that in Nextel cup but my hat's off to Luke for doing that and I am a Toto fan
@@nu-waveutilitytrailers3308 I totally agree. I'm the guy playing with Luke in the video, so I was just saying that as cool as it must be for the band to do this, I know it was just as cool for me to get to play with some of my heroes. But yeah, you'll see that in any industry where who you know will totally influence what heights you're able to reach, regardless of how good you are (to a certain extent, obviously).
@@JosephFacer oh I see if you ever need help on equipment let me know me and my wife will donate to you but anyway good luck on anything you do and may the good Lord bless you and for many years to come thanks Tony nu-wave utitily trailers Charlotte NC
@@nu-waveutilitytrailers3308 That's super generous, thanks Tony! Best of luck to you as well!
I was at the sound check with you. you owned it man!!!! and got to play Lukes guitar. rock on bro
Dude, freaking awesome. Steve was like "what do I do?", lol
Yeah he was. Most of the videos I've seen of fans playing are drummers and a couple keyboardists. I'm the only guitarist I've seen do this, so he probably isn't used to just sitting and watching.
Actually, this was badass. Splendid job!
You sir are amazing !
Wicked stuff Joseph! Good on you. And you're brilliant!
under pressure for sure!!! so nice ! you rules man! love this kind of magic moment,so kind and simple from these great musicians and so much for us!
Thanks! Once we started playing, the pressure was totally off. It was so easy to fit in playing with those guys because the pocket is so tight.
Thats fucking incredible! I'd cry if I had this opportunity haha!
I've watched your partial video for "Holy War". I think you should have done a full one. Maybe tighten it up a bit but I thought you were pretty good for what that's worth.
+Glen Rivara thanks for taking the time to check it out dude!
It was beautiful. You are a great guitarrist. Congratulations.
Thanks!
Joseph, a dream come true and you knocked it out of the park. Great job.
Thanks!
Great job man. I could never play someone else’s guitar. Especially Steve’s.
Thanks! Honestly there really wasn't any difference between my guitar (his sig) and his personal one. Setup was basically identical, aside from him wearing his strap a lot lower than I'm used to.
I've watched this a bunch of times since I first found it earlier this year. I wonder what's going through Steve's mind in that moment. It's got to be really humbling to think that someone is such a fan that they would learn a new song and go up and show how much it means to them by actually going and playing with the band. It takes guts to dude. I think it's amazing that Toto allows people to do this in their sound checks. Can you imagine Mick or Keith doing this? I'm sure it was amazing for you to have done this and it will be a moment you will remember all your life. I think it's really great. So thank you for allowing the rest of us to share in this cool moment.
It's just as humbling to me that they would let me play with them (with no idea whether or not I would totally suck) and then sincerely tell me I did a great job. I'm nowhere near the level these guys are at, but they treated me like I was, which was incredible. Glad you enjoyed it!
I wonder if they saw your tutorial video of how to play the song before this happened. There's a great video of Steve somewhere in South America watching a Toto cover band. Finally he gets up and does "Hold The Line" with them. I mean, who would do that? It's the coolest thing. These guys have a lot of heart and that's why their fans have followed them all these years. The fact that they are brilliant doesn't hurt of course 8-).
I doubt he'd seen my video. I'm pretty sure my cover of Chinatown was the first full cover on RUclips, though. That's a way cool story with the cover band. These guys are just the real deal in every way.
Joseph Facer Steve is a cool dude. What a great experience for you!
@@JosephFacer To be able to meet and jam with the band that inspires you to keep playing/teaching. Awesome. I've been extremely fortunate to have met my musical idols as well. I was in a band that got to open for CCR(Revisited). It wasn't the true CCR but still cool. I've met my idol Sammy Hagar once... very cool dude.
So cool! Great job!!
man i can’t imagine that opportunity. my hands would freeze up and id be clammy all over the neck! luke’s watching! hahaha incredible man
I felt the same, but the whole band was really great about making me feel totally welcome on stage with them. True pros in every way
What a thrill that must have been! Well done.
Thanks!
Joseph....I watched this again after a few months.....how cool to play in front of one your heroes. I probably would have vapor locked. A memory of a lifetime my friend
A proud moment for Steve! :)
I sure like to think so
wow - great experience. very jealous! You nailed it
Thanks! It was an incredible experience.
Wooooaaawwooo ! Bravo !
Holy frickin crap - this would be the highlight of my life - I don't think I'd ever recover from a high like this. Great performance man, excellent video too.
Thanks! It was pretty incredible, and always fun to look back on.
Joseph Facer God, this was 5 years ago - you are very talented my man - I injured my left hand many years ago and had to drop the guitar playing - very upset about it now - best I can manage now is playing on Guitar Hero on the 360. There’s seriously no one who could say playing lead with Steve Lukather standing next to them with hands in his pockets can’t possibly be positively affected by this - shit - this must have been amazing!
@@SegaStation Sorry about your injury man, that must have been really difficult to have to give up guitar.
Joseph Facer thank God for Guitar Hero. Now I can be a rock star EVERY evening (usually with my wife and kids arms folded, frowning) seriously - I saw Focus play in Sheffield in 2007 with a ‘replacement’ lead guitarist who was clearly - at the time - 30 years younger than the rest of the group, and your performance reminded me very much of him - he completely brought the house down - completely capable and handsome, just needing a band - stick with prog rock mate lol - I seriously hope and expect you to make your future out of your abilities - Jesus, this would be like me getting up and playing with Supertramp?!?
@@SegaStation That's awesome man, thanks for the kind words. Prog rock is definitely something I enjoy doing, and I hope to make a career out of doing original music someday. For now, I play in cover bands for weddings/events and do freelance audio engineering, and I'm lucky I get to do music for a living!
THAT was freakin' amazing! Great playing and you took it all in stride too. To be on display like that and in the presence of heroes, I would have totally and completely lost my shit!
Thanks man!
You played it beautifully, brother. It's great to see the joy that it gave Luke.
WOW. It's one of my dream. Well done man!
Thanks!
Can't imagine playing that right next to the master and the entire band. You did great man!
Thanks!
Dude. .that was fricken epic. .atta boi. ..awesome job. .
Thanks man!
Toto come to India the please..... We love ull.....
That young man has a future .
I sure hope you're right! Thanks for the kind words!
Joseph, you were great, man -- that must have been too cool!
+Dave Kington Thanks! It really was amazing.
Nailed it! A precious moment in time!! :)
Thanks, it was and still is an amazing experience to look back on
@@JosephFacer I never went to play on stage with Steve, but i managed to sneek in during sound check in Paradiso Amsterdam, @ los lobottomis. Great gig and we saw them 5 times that year! I did however sang on stage with marillion in 1999. My moment of fame.. and like you I will remember that forever.
@@bobvaningen578 That's awesome
@@JosephFacer Cheers!
I probably would’ve choked in front of those guys but you did a great job!
They seemed very nice and down to earth... what a great video!
They definitely were, and super nice to talk with afterwards, even though I did my fair share of choking! Thanks for the compliment!
Wow, this must have been like a dream and a nightmare in one :) Great played Joseph!!!
It was all dream. As soon as we started playing, I just fell right into the incredible pocket they laid down, and they were all very encouraging during and after.
dude great, you totally deserved it, i learned the song from you ;) It was great to watch nice job man! :D
finally someone who plays like lukather
You're too kind, but thanks!
Daaaamn.. You did really great!! All those greats watching you play, not your set up, not your Instrument.. Amazing dude! I wouldn`t have been able to play one decent note in that Situation:D
you rocked!
that was great!
Thanks for checking it out!
this too cool man
Thanks!
Man, you are a lucky guy to play with those legends. Even Luke has to sing when you play... nice. But you are a great player too, just go forward playing the guitar like that. God Bless You.
Thanks man, it was awesome that Luke stepped up to the mic, I haven't seen him do that when other people play with them unless he's singing lead.
Holy crap - that was REALLY good!! Must’ve been awesome to play live with them. The closest I got was playing a few songs for them on a virtual meet and greet with them for their livestream last year 😊
Thanks!
@@JosephFacer how long have you been playing? Can you play other Toto songs?
@@itguru2037 I've been playing for about 17 years (that probably means it was about 12 years in this video). I've learned probably about 20 Toto songs, and I could probably play most of their catalog if I took the time to learn it. I have a few videos of playthroughs and lessons of Toto songs on my channel.
@@JosephFacer I can sing most of their songs. Awesome job
You did a great job!!
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Wow, you did great man !..hope so much Toto will come to Indonesia
THAT WAS SICK!!!!!!! BWA HA HA! GET DOWN!
Thanks man!
Great job! good for you!
Thanks man!
Sweet! Wow!
Great video, you are good indeed!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
You are welcome
Wow.....how cool was this.....Steve looks like he's really digging on your playing dude.
He and the whole band were really digging it, which was totally unreal. Talking to them afterward, everyone had really nice things to say to me about my playing. The whole experience was just incredible.
i love the look he gives to steve at 1:30, like "was that any good?"
That was me just realizing that he was standing right in front of me watching me play his part!
Waw, great job.
Thanks!
felicitaciones desde argentinaaaaa!!me gustaria estar en tu lugar!!
Muchas gracias! Puedes hacerlo tambien cuando Toto va a Argentina
Joseph that was fracking awesome! Luke didn't know what to do with himself! I'll bet that MusicMan feels so good in your hands! I used to own an Ibanez RS1010SL 1983 back in the day when Luke played them too, and I absolutely Kick myself for not holding onto it over the years, even though it was the old Floyd rose without the lock so every time you broke a string, the darned thing was useless (just like when Luke plays Red House at the end of Candyman) I live in LA so I've been lucky enough to have seen my share of Toto and Los Lobotomys and even When Steve and Lee Ritenour played at the Cocoanut Grove back in 1990 but I have never had the luck to actually play with him. I envy you and respect your ability to bang that sing out right in front of him like that!
+Jeff Boddye-Murphy Thanks man. I actually have his same guitar in black, and mine feels just like his, which is very cool. I got him to sign it that night, too. The Cocoanut Grove concert is killin'. Lee is another favorite player of mine.
+Joseph Facer We are definitely blessed and spoiled here in LA when we have these guys and so many others like them in our backyard when they aren't touring. Just about everyone Luke has ever collaborated with is on my list of faves. Lee, Larry Carlton, Steve Vai, Fee Waybill (not a guitar player but gotta throw him in for their songwriting) etc. I've been a Toto/Luke fan since before the first album was officially released. In fact my nickname 'jbone" is a tribute to Jeff and Steve, given to me by a fellow musician, Toto fan, and fraternity brother, back when we first started playing together!
There is a spot in the video like mid way where Luke motions to the guy playing gtr to bring back in volume..and he does instantly....I had a dream years ago that I was auditioning for Kansas on stage with them..and another person auditioning was a former girl friend...a shrink would have a hay day on that one🤨
Great job!!
Thanks!
Excelente
Gracias!
What a privilege!
Jorge is Great!
well played to steve for letting people do this , no one likes when someone else uses our instruments
Everybody in the band, and Luke especially, were very gracious about the whole thing. Top tier professionals in every sense.
Privilegiado.
I was very lucky!

I’ve seen your video doing 21st century blues, I’ve been working with it
@@perryeves8566 Awesome man, that's a fun one to play!
You are welcome, sir! ;o)
+Steven Adler Thanks for hooking me up with the video!
And to play with Luke's guitar, too!!
His felt just like mine (I brought my LIII BFR for him to sign). EBMM does a fantastic job of getting their signature instruments set up just like the artist wants it done.
Well done kid well done. Nice
Thanks!
I got to play drums last year with them in Charlotte during soundcheck. Redhouse.
That's awesome man, I hope somebody took some good video of you! I know I love revisiting this video every now and then.
this is incredible..they must be such nice guys....no egos an all ..but thats how it shld b when ur at the top...and y not.
Spot on. Some of the best musicians in the world, but also such nice guys.
Good job bro 😉🔥
Thanks!
you play like a god ;)
And Luke's approval!
Rad!
Ha ha excellent.... I'd have run off!
Thanks!
I can't imagine how you felt!
It was pretty surreal! The coolest thing was that it really just felt comfortable to be on stage with these giants and they made me feel right at home playing with them.
Well done Joseph
Thanks!
Boy you're lucky. ;))
Go Joseph! Long time ago already, but great job nonetheless!
Thanks!
Wow, I am impressed! I am nowhere near your level but even if I was, I would not have been able to play a single note in the same situation!
Thanks man. I'm not an incredible guitarist by any means, but I think no matter how good you are, you'll never feel like you could jump into this kind of situation with guys like Toto. At the same time, they immediately made me feel super comfortable on stage with them, which I see as just another testament to how pro they are.
@@JosephFacer Apart from the solo, I could probably play all the other parts well enough in my room, but playing them in such a situation, with Luke in front of you, is a completely different story and you handled it like a pro!
@@scottyecora I totally get that. Thanks man!
so lucky
How nervous were you with the MASTER standing right there as you played his song, I would have been shittin my pants !!! Good job you lucky SOB !!!
+143Chippy Thanks man. I was super nervous both before and after playing (hands shaking and everything), but as soon as the song started, all the nerves were gone and it just felt like playing with my buddies.
+Joseph Facer How long did it take you to learn the song and was you worried that you would make mistakes?
+michael jagger I learned it between when the song was pre-released and when the album actually came out (a couple of weeks maybe?). I had practiced the song quite a bit hoping that I would get this chance, so I wasn't worried about making mistakes (even though I did make a few). I was really nervous going up there, though. It's not every day you get to play guitar for your guitar hero!
Joseph Facer No it isn't .Many people play guitar hero but you was actually playing with a real guitar hero. It was really good to see a young musician like you playing on stage playing with band as big as that. Not many people get that chance too If i was invited up on stage id love to play Africa or Rosanna on the Dave's piano or Steve's P synth's as im a piano/keyboard player but do play a few other instruments too. I hope that they come back to the UK sometime.because if they do ill be the first person to get a VIP ticket and see them live. You can't get a band that's any humbler than this. These cats rock.
+michael jagger Thanks, I really appreciate that, and I'm so grateful that they let me play with them. They really are super humble and nice guys.
el sueño del bepi!!
fucking great man!

Thanks!
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy ... or a better guitar player :)
Very kind of you to say, thanks!
WOW. That"s amazing. How did you deal to play with TOTO? It mus have been a great experience.
This was at the VIP soundcheck and I just asked to play with them. I think they let one person do it at each soundcheck (if someone asks). It was so cool, words really can't describe it.
Its cool. :) You played great! :) I was on TOTO last year in budapest, but I havent VIP ticket.. Steve Lukather is awesome!
I would crap myself if lukather is looking right at my playing hehe
He was actually really cool about it!
Uooooooowwwwwwwwwww👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏!!!
Thanks, you're too kind!
I've watched this a bunch of time because I think it's bad ass. What does Steve kick on or or at 1:12?
He was just raising the volume pedal. When I went up he said something like "You'll be fine with just channel 2 and the volume pedal", and I had gone a little low for the verse because I wasn't used to his stage mix, so he was helping me out.
