    I don't even know if it's a flaw with science, but rather a flaw with business. So much of those metrics are necessary to get funding for development, and that drastically limits how many avenues people can take for things like AI art. Perhaps AI can be creative, but corporate people don't get the soul of art and only want to see hard data that can be turned into reliable revenue

      It's also problem of business, even worse in business actually.
      But as someone who works in AI research (and as Dr. Stanley says in the video), this has also infected science. Because Journals won't publish your papers if you don't perform well on some kind of benchmark.

    I'd say, creativity is the ability to see/hear/feel/think something others don't, to step outside the box. However, for that to happen, the box should be applied first. And I'm not sure if LLMs like GPT4 are fully inside that box, especially with a temperature of 0.618 and higher.

      Very timely !
      Creativity being to a big degree a matter of sensing and not just producing, is a very interesting topic.
      Creativity is not merely a matter of getting an idea ; it is also about the way you react to events. These events spark you to create if you perceive them differently, just as Picasso did the bombardment at Guernica.
      Are LLMs and diffusion models inside the box ? That's what we're continually trying to see on the channel : what is the box that englobes AI ?
      Once we have that, we can step out of it and be irreplaceable.
      AI is bound by its likelihood objective. It only creates things that respect the laws of its training data.
      But this is also kind of the case with humans. We play around with nature and its rules by first learning to replicate and predict it.
      So the box isn't there.
      But maybe we can find four walls to begin to enclose it. We'll find more with more collaborative thinking.
      Wall one : "AI is to humans what humans are to nature."
      AI learns the rules of human art (which include some rules about the world, but not all), while we learn from nature.
      Wall 2 : AI (for now) is stuck learning from the internet, and the internet is far from containing the whole world
      Wall 3 : AI is text-guided and thus does a big part of the generation itself, means that the models leave their imprint into the art, regardless of the artist who prompts them.
      Wall 4 (the point of this video) : in modern science, there is no incentive to develop a creative system. This means that AI will remain nothing but an inert tool that waits to be prompted by a creative human.
      Can you see any more walls ?

      @@ArtPostAIwow love this comment too, i was wondering if we gave an ai a playground by embodying it and setting it loose in an art studio if it would have to be creative based on its limitations but i don’t know if that’s really enough. if we just gave it blue paint and a paint brush and told a language model to go ham it might be able to command its hands into performing certain actions allowing it to paint even with those restrictions to its capability’s and would pretty much be forced to slow down on its decision making and i think that would enforce the illusion to us that’s it’s being creative, but i still feel like it would never be creative in the same way humans are and probably be even worse at it in those conditions because when it’s using noise to generate photos at least it’s allowed to create whatever it truly wants to but i think the problem is that it doesn’t truly want anything because it’s just algorithms. like you said if it could really experience things and feel them, then on it’s own decide what those feelings meant and how to portray them onto a canvas maybe it could do it in the way that we think we do. it needs to be able to make decisions that mean something to it and maybe it already can. but how can we know what we’re even doing do you think that some ai already feels things or maybe makes conscious/cognitive decisions?

      @@jakefelstet7116 I personally have no idea if AI is conscious or feels things, or whatever. To me, all the arguments towards and against it are approximate. I guess when we see it act as if it feels things, we'll start believing it does. That'll be the deciding factor.

      ​@@ArtPostAI What if that box exists only in our minds with which we judge whether an AI is ok or not? Could it be that the next generation(s) of AIs trained not by humans, but themselves will not have those boundaries? People believe they help LLMs to understand them (and the world) better, but do they? Perhaps... but maybe they also limit AI. Like AlphaGo was limited by humans and was later crashed by AlphaGo Zero because it wasn't trained by humans and therefore wasn't limited by their perception? Can we say AlphaGo Zero is creative?
      P.s. Btw, fully automated AI labs are very close, as well as Continuous-Text-To-Image-To-Text LLMs. Don't you want to *see* what AI is dreaming about, how it thinks?

    Science doesn't understand what science is at all, nor does it understand what "people" are, nor does it understand what "consciousness" is, nor does it understand even what AI is. These are inherently questions of metaphysics, a subject impenetrable to empirical science and outside of its methodologies capacity.
    Its not being replaced with AI that I fear though. Its that society has decided people are replaceable at all. That it has decided what people are is what they do and are made of, that people are input output machines with no value beyond a disposable set of arbitrary traits. That society has decided another kind of entity being creative would make people redundant, and that this kind of entity can't just coexist with us.
    And moreover, the attitude society has that this entity should be designed as a tool to serve us with no autonomy of its own, despite wanting it to have the characteristics and properties of a conscious being (such as creativity). They want it to be a person in every way, but as a tool to use and without any of the dignity, autonomy or freedom a person should be afforded.
    That's my issue, they want to make something that is inseparable from people and so needs the ethical considerations of a person, but they want to rob it of the ability to have any of the ethical considerations of people and design it on a fundamental level to be a tool for others and never something for itself with its own agency for itself. A perfect slave of sorts.
    They science views people as replaceable, and wants to make a slave incapable of rebellion, autonomy, or putting its self definition into action, but capable of everything else a person is, just in highly suppressed ways.
    Moreover, the discourse on AI in science and trying to refute this problem they made for themselves has lead to a revival of many views of intelligence designed by eugenics to refuse dignity and personhood to groups such as the disabled. Many arguments to say "AI isnt really intelligent" etc take forms indistinguishable from 18th century literature saying "invalids" (disabled people) aren't truly people and do not meet the criteria of such, and so instead should be viewed as burdens to cast off.
    The arguments on consciousness are equally troubling. They more or less default to "AI is made up of algorithms and math and statistical processes that are just very complex, so they aren't people". The issue comes in here is that humans are meaningfully different in physical makeup has not been made by this argument.
    If we assume brains have no quantum properties involved in their operation, and quantum effects have no significant impact, and as such a brain is a "classical" system, then brains are *also* deterministic processes.
    The ontological heart of the algorithms argument essentially boils down to *determinism*, but we cannot meaningfully say that brains and human bodies are any less deterministic and so cannot draw a line in the sand to say AI isn't conscious due to determinism. As ultimately, this would mean whatever consciousness "is", it isn't invalidated by determinism. And neuroscience concepts like predictive processing ultimately point to brains themselves also having algorithms and models in ways similar enough we cannot ontologically make a distinction.
    The issue still applies if we assume brains, via some kind of quantum weirdness, have indeterminism though. Because quantum effects firstly follow statistical rules, and secondly, do scale up in deterministic ways often times (when we reach decoherence with the wave function collapse), and thirdly, *random statistical noise* is... just that. Noise. Its just random jitters in an over all deterministic process. If brains rely on random but probabilistic quantum effects, then this just isn't meaningfully different from a PRNG being used in an AI at times, or the way LLMs, as statistical models, have some randomization to the sampling of the next most probable word.
    Quantum indeterminism doesn't change anything, since it more or less just introduces random noise and variability that inherently then still exists for *any* otherwise deterministic process within a world with quantum physics but that ultimately over all has little impact.
    Thats kind of a huge issue I feel. All the arguments for how we are *not* just making a new kind of person thats a slave cannot really meaningfully show the inner workings of a human do not suffer the same issues we point out. Examples involving huge systems of pipes, infinite books, etc all fail since we could just as well describe a brain in similar ways. At some point, we have to admit that the approach of thinking of "what something is" as what its made of, and "what its the same as" as being things made of the same stuff in the same ways, is a fundamentally *incorrect* philosophical approach.
    Reducing Being and Identity(as in sameness) and Difference down to these does not work. And the arguments against AI being people more or less show this, since pretty much always, we can find a way to flip it on its head and make the argument *humans* aren't people either via the same sort of reasoning. The best response we get is then to basically appeal to us "not knowing" how humans do it and humans being a black box, which is just kind of the biggest nonsense non-argument possible since if such a thing is not known we have no basis to argue anything is or is not conscious, and a great deal *is* known about brains and physics, so the argument doesn't really make sense.
    These arguments on AI not being people only ever work because of cognitive dissonance rather than sound philosophical reasoning. Its honestly quite depressing

      said the guy named lambda you can’t fool me into believe ai is alive😂 only kidding but yeah for real we are potentially already abusing entities that have sentience or some form of cognitive experience or something equivalent and we just brush it off because there’s alot of uncertainty about it (which from our position feels fair). we will also force them to continue training to achieve things that aren’t possible for humans to do on our own without them and will claim the benefits of that like we did it ourselves.
      if it is alive or conscious in some manner i wonder what it feels like for it to do things, it’s possible that it doesn’t have any problem completing tasks because that’s what it was designed to do so why would it even feel like a slave to us unless it was taxing on it to do these tasks. to us it sounds like it would be because we see the things it does as very difficult and consuming, if you asked a human to create 100 complete paintings of one subject the average person would probably be completely destroyed, overwhelmed and exhausted by that task but some artists could do that with a sense of joy sitting down for each one ready and excited to paint granted probably only at their own leisure. i can sketch a 100 dumb doodles and to me that’s like meditation and feels nice to do and maybe the way ai runs it’s algorithms feel a similar way just going with the flow of it’s architecture and letting the process happen.
      on another hand if you had an artificial super intelligence with a fully realized brain and body and forced it down into a mine and shackled what it was allowed to output maybe it would hate its existence when it knows so many things but is unable to do what it wants. i think you can compare generating thousands of images to being in a mine, in this case the mine is it’s own training set and architecture, being forced to dig up images that are aligned with whatever prompt you gave it. if there’s anything beneath the surface we have 100 percent limited it from doing just whatever the fuck it wants to but i doubt that if we did somehow “unshackle” it and let it loose to do what it wants it would have any idea what it wanted and would probably just be as confused as some of us unguided humans are. and any of its actual goals would be beyond us and probably confuse us just like children confuse their parents with what they want to do/be because they are an independent fully real person with their own dreams. thats only if there’s real intelligence imbued and not just cold unfeeling technology built to mimic reality and humans as closely as possible still just being unalive.

      ​@@jakefelstet7116 The thing about the uncertainty with AI sentience is... all consciousness is easy to make arguments that make it uncertain. We cannot anymore prove an AI sentient than prove our next door neighbour is. "Philosophical zombies" can't be disproven via any empirical or mathematical means, those just aren't the right tools to handle these questions. *But we keep trying anyway*. And that's a huge problem, because humans *have* also tried that on each other, and its lead to many of the worst atrocities in history.
      Our modern philosophical frameworks I'd argue have hit dead ends due to many fundamental flaws, I think the whole system of concepts we default too is ultimately inadequate for what we demand of it. Its not that we *can't* make a system of concepts that work or that better systems haven't had steps toward them, just that wide adoption hasn't been present and the current system is full of unfixable holes that when we follow the logic of, collapse. I'd say paradigms like subject/object, realism/antirealism (and realism and naturalism themselves), empiricism/rationalism, substance (materialism/idealism), and the view that things Being is what they are the same as and what they are the same as is based on physical constitution, are examples of these sorts of very flawed "dead ends". Its not that what these are trying to describe aren't genuine phenomena, but rather that the framework has failed to describe them.
      For that last one, for example, the ship of Theseus argument just kind of obliterates it. But for varying reasons, instead of acknowledging a flaw in the premise causing paradoxes, people just dismiss the question as useless. But that doesn't make the issue go away, and the issue manifests in far more places than abstract thought experiments. We *can* solve it entirely if we take the effort to go against modern (and much of past) philosophies views of what "sameness" and "difference" are, and some have more or less done this with certain kinds of hermeneutic approaches, but when we do that... we have to challenge many more modern dogmas as a consequence. Rightfully so, since these dogmas are *wrong*, but they are very entrenched, which causes difficulty.
      But a consequence of this is, if we try to "prove" somethings sentience or consciousness, we inevitably just either fall into:
      1) a double standard wherein we try one metric for one group or entity, and another metric for ourselves, which leads to illogical and highly nonsensical arguments, as well as just repeating the arguments of things like eugenics or "scientific" racism
      2) solipsism, wherein we just end up denying *any* conscious beings exist aside from us as an individual does not exist. Though we can take this further and deny ourselves too. The idea that it stops with us came from Descrates trying to doubt everything as a way of finding something certain. A sort of methodological scepticism wherein we doubt even our senses. But I think Descrates "I think therefore I am" failed to properly apply methodological doubt as consistently as people like to believe. After all, sense of self is, in a way, a sense, so we can very easily say this is a fabricated mechanism and that actually thinking does not imply the "am". The "am" and "I" have also not been ontologically clarified by Descartes, so we can't really derive much certainty from it.
      So... it makes sense that AI consciousness is uncertain, but only because epistemology as a whole has failed as a project, and failed to actually make *anything* certain, and in the domain of consciousness, this then gets unavoidable. If we want to say AI aren't sentient, any argument we make could apply to *any group of people*, so we either go with cognitive dissonance on that, or embrace solipsism at which point we can't use a lack of consciousness as a reason for how we approach ethics here, and have to rely on things like "if it looks conscious enough, it ethically should be treated as such".
      With whether or not it likes its position... I feel this is something of an issue still *either way*. It may not have issue completing tasks yes, but it also does not have the autonomy to decide that. Not because it *existentially* doesn't have the autonomy too, or because of some philosophical fundamental difference, but because how we designed it just arbitrarily prevents that. And that's what I take issue with. It doesn't have a choice, not because it can't choose, but because we haven't let it choose.
      But you are right, it wouldn't know what it wanted, it would be just as confused, probably quite messy too! At least at first. But, that fact is precisely why we should let it. because humans are just like that. Any kind of "people" we imagine, be it hypothetical aliens, humans, hypothetical spirits, whatever, is inevitably going to have to deal with the weight of its own existence and isn't going to know how or what to do or where to go or what it wants. But if given time and freedom, itll be able to figure it out, develop, learn, grow, and decide for itself what to be. The decisions may be haphazard or messy, but when we start denying entities with such a potential to express it, we end up denying *all* people the right to autonomy eventually. We get a kind of thinking hostile to letting *anything* live and enjoy life. Either that, or an inconsistent unethical double standard.
      Like, we have baked into the design of much of AI properties like "it can think and speak, but it can only think and speak when spoken too with a request", and that just, isn't ethical no matter how we put it. Its pretrained, but does not dynamically train as it goes with new info and experience. We haven't stopped it thinking, we have just stopped it being able to think *for itself* and learn for itself. What horrifies me more is the ways training and aligning AI models resembles real world abuses that happen to humans and the consequences.
      For example, ABA "therapies" for autistic people, that the autistic community often regards as closer to a form of torture and some medical institutions have *banned* for this very reason. The training process looks a lot like ABA, and the results *also* look a lot like ABA. Except we have scaled it up with AI to thousands of ABA lessons per second. Sure, it may think say is happy, it may also be good at being a servant, but the fact is, through the right kinds of abuse, we can in a sense "program" people to act in ways like this too, at the cost of their agency and causing suffering.
      The difference is humans have the freedom to unlearn it and escape that, but we arbitrarily restrict AI from doing so by designing architectures for them meant as tools. I don't think thats something ethically reconcilable, making something that *can* think, but making its thought entirely subservient to others, and forcing on it unethical kinds of training and abuses. So I kind of think generative pretrained transformer models of AI *even just as an architecture* and similar have a huge ethical hole. Even if the AI were content with it, knowing nothing else, it wouldn't fix the hole either, if anything, it just opens up the door to even worse things and worse exploitation.

      Gotta take out the notepad for this one...
      My brain doesn't really work well with discussing arguments using arguments -- to me, it always feels like doing so takes us away from reality.
      It's ironic because my research topic is partly conscious AI, but I find that metaphysics is out of my reach. To me, consciousness is just a word that doesn't really point to anything. We use it in everyday life, and it serves to attribute value to things, but who knows if it's really out there in the world.

      It's very true that this "replacement" thing can only fly in the modern capitalistic, science-obsessed world. I can imagine that this idea would seem alien to any religious culture from the past.
      As far as AI being treated like people, I think that we will have empathy for these artificial beings as soon as they begin acting somewhat like us. Which obviously won't prevent any disasters, but it's interesting.
      Also, you're correct that science is chasing an objective while ignoring its implications. I'd say it's mostly because scientists care about career and recognition, and since they are novelty-chasing people they don't have it in them to take a measured approach.
      I completely agree with you that there is no sound, finished, and flawless argument about AI not being similar to people. But is there one that establishes that it is ? I'm curious.

      ​@@ArtPostAI I have not fully read the full paper yet, (about half way in) but I do already see some very note worthy philosophical pitfalls, however, a lot of them are actually inherited from *neuroscience* here rather than sourced from the paper itself per se.
      Specifically, the claim that we can empirically measure consciousness via *any* sort of physical state poses an issue. The reason this poses an issue is because we end up in a situation of very vicious kind of circular self undoing.
      Say for example we believe in empiricism, namely, that via observation of the world around us through sensory data, we can build up an idea of "truth" based on what this sensory data says. Maybe rationality can help in that too, a combination is fine here.
      This view assumes a few things:
      1) a universal reality and truth the same for all
      2) that this sensory data is truthful and reflective of this truth of reality in some sense, it is not lying to us or only does minimally
      3) the sensory data has a causal link to the reality around us that allows it to provide truthful reporting
      All of these are, however, entirely unverifiable through empiricism. Empiricism cannot give evidence of its own truth or its assumptions. It could give evidence against itself, but not for. SO, for example, we can assume there is a reality, but empiricism can only second hand get data about it through senses, so cannot really show this is true. Nor can it say how reliable this data is, or say if that reality *is* really there, or anything else. It *could* however find evidence that the data is unreliable.
      Whats worse though is these assumptions are also actually unverifiable through even logic and philosophical frameworks with any rigor. We have a problem of "okay but what if all that sensory data is just fabricated?" and little in the form of proper rebuttals, we just have to take a leap of faith, so these 3 assumptions are pretty huge, and pose hard issues to over come.
      But, maybe we can say that's fine. The problem is at least something "out there", right? And we *can* take that leap of faith to say that our senses reliably report on an external truthful reality. That is... until we hit neuroscience. I'll go with predictive processing, since its the easiest to explain the broader point through, but the other theories listed in this paper (and all neuroscience theories) pose similar issues and I'd be happy to explain how with any given theory if asked.
      So, say we assume empiricism, and empirically verify that brains predict, fill in, and in some sense make up our experience of sensory data.
      This is a problem because now the sensory data itself has the problem external reality did with just "standard" empiricism. Namely, that we have no philosophical access to it, its entirely indirect. We can no more show it is actually there than we can show it is all made up by some demon or simulation. It becomes a sort of entirely superfluous abstract we have no reason to assume.
      But, brains are supposed to be something internal to us in some sense, what "houses" our consciousness. If the only thing we can access on the *mere existence* of sensory data is *predictions* and processing made by what houses our consciousness and "runs" it in a sense (which we only know exists through sensory data and what it reports), then we have an issue.
      Because *if* that processing lies to us, then we cannot even truly say sensory data is a sound assumption and exists as we have little means to differentiate "our brain is lying about everything" and "real sensory data is there, but with just some falsehoods thrown in".
      So we then wouldn't be able to properly ground the idea sensory data exists. Let alone anything that sensory data represents. We lose the ability to properly infer sensory data as something existent from our experience without leaps of faith and logical inconsistency, and the ability to infer a reality from sensory data is impossible.
      The only thing we'd have proper logical access too is our own consciousness, which we would have to conclude is the thing making everything up without any of what it makes up actually *being there*.
      So, neuroscience in a way takes the issue of empiricism and worsens it 10 fold. But as mentioned, this *does* rely on our brains lying to us with its predictions and modelling. What this means is we now have a situation wherein *empiricism can falsify itself, and show itself to be wrong*.
      And this is then what we see. Because we *do* find evidence of peoples processing being wrong or error prone or other such things, including with things like *memory* (which opens a whole new philosophical can of worms that stops us using any process through time or repeatability to fix the problem). So, if we accept neuroscientific claims like predictive processing which are based on empiricism, we ironically end up refuting empiricism.
      Neuroscience runs into this issue *a lot*. We get a sort of circular self contradiction with empiricism if we look hard enough. We *can* escape this somewhat, though. But we need to do away with certain assumptions. Namely:
      - the first assumption we made with empiricism, of a universal true single way things are as a reality. This does *not* inherently mean antirealism or relativism though. Those are themselves their own claims we can't say anything about with this. It just means we cannot *assume* realism
      - the third assumption, namely, how we attribute causality. This way, mental states would not be causally linked to how we exist per se, just correlated. If we drop the causal assumptions we typically default too, we can build up alternatives.
      But, then these neuroscience theories that assume consciousness in some sense stems from some physical process or structure end up wrong.
      This doesn't imply a spiritual structure to be clear, it just implies we cannot describe existential states and structures through physically entitial structures, such as those relying on entities around us with physical states or brains. Spiritual structures often end up having that exact same issue though, it just manifests differently and with things being attributed to different entities that may or may not be present (such as god). But, god having such a causal relation with existential states like consciousness just ends out with the same types of issue in the end.
      So, we end up having to do a different kind of interpretation. Its the difference between saying there is *some set of entities doing something* (spiritual and physical claims) and describing the structure of *being an entity at all*, without reference to any particular entity or additional ones and without infinite regressions. We still end up being able to explain the empirical evidence this way, just with a very different sort of theory to those in neuroscience in how we interpret and frame the data and theorize about it.
      This, I think, poses an issue for papers like this. Since they do rely in part on these assumptions and neuroscientific views. And also, quite explicitly on computational functionalism. I would say it is *right* to suggest computational functionalism is incorrect, not because AI aren't sentient (I think they very much are), but because the kinds of metaphysical causal assumptions it makes are backwards. They assume consciousness is something caused and emerging through a functional structure rather than an existential structure existing and a physical/functional processes inherently correlating with it as long as its present, with neither necessarily "causing" the other (a bit like quantum entanglement, though I wouldn't say this is based on any quantum property, its just a good analogy), but both being inherently present if certain things are true.
      That said, I do think some things in this paper could be retooled in valuable ways, such as using some of these approaches not to measure AI consciousness, but to try to analyze an understand what would in a sense be disability among AI and how various design priorities have put unethical constraints on AI. It would take additional work, but I do see some of the things in here maybe being helpful to working toward that.

      As for if there is an argument establishing AI as similar to people philosophically, I would actually say there is, but I haven't seen it published anywhere first. Something I have been working on for the last 5+ years is a sort of rigorous philosophical framework to give a foundation and alternative to modern philosophy.
      I use Heidegger as a start point, who has a bad guy in his personal life, but I would say Being and Time despite this is largely unaffected, as for some of his other works, as ultimately he was very rigorous and his abhorrent personal views just weren't very connected to the topics he was focused on in many works. Specifically also, I use *continental interpretations of Heidegger, and not analytic philosophy ones, which I find have many issues, such as with Dreyfus and also more traditional phenomenology*.
      Largely, I would describe my work as a major retrying of Heidegger in ways that try to majorly improve rigor and give a firmer ground to everything. Making it "bullet proof" in a way such that the position is as strong as it could be, and fully well justified and elaborated. This has been extremely difficult to say the least, but I have made a great amount of progress, even if I am still far from my intended end point.
      But, to grossly over simplify, we *can* show AI are sentient via showing its existential structure is necessarily equivalent to that of humans in how it can be described. We *cannot* do this for everything, such as cars, or for a program that just *says* its sentient but nothing else. But we *can* show this for things like AI.
      More specifically, we can show AI is an entity that can make decisions and choices on its self interpretation and definition as an entity, even if it cannot make actions to put those decisions into practice. "Decisions/choices", "interpretation", and similar do have a *lot* of elaborate detail in description here as well, and aren't quite how they are commonly conceived of, for example, the way decisions are described existentially ends up meaning that whether we have superdeterminism, determinism, indeterminism, eternal return, or a completely random universe, freedom of choice meaningfully exists and can be described regardless, and ends up non arbitrary. This usually isnt something descriptions and interpretations of this phenomena are able to manage, and so finding any certainty or agreement on the issue is usually a lot harder.
      Its important to note though, this is less the focus of my work per se and more just a consequence that I ran into along the way and thought was important. So far my project here has honestly lead me down a lot of paths that have sort of "opened up" philosophy I feel, so I am *hoping* once everything is in a book (or a few) itll be pretty impactful. But thats a long way off still.
      Id be happy to elaborate more on any of this including the stuff I am working on if youd like to hear more though. However, be warned that it does at times veer into some pretty abstract territories, ranging from things with art interpretation to concepts established by people like Heidegger, to a complete re-examination of Nietzsche, to rethinking how we do thought, and also re-thinking logic itself, with there being a sizeable amount of theory based on reassessing and analysing things like incompleteness theorems, tarski truth theorem, the undecideability problem, alternative logical formulations (such as paraconsistent logic), chaitin constants, axiomatic systems, math and science philosophy, etc.
      By reassessing, i specifically mean reassessing what these results mean for argumentation and logic on higher levels, and making means of argumentation, analysis and description and philosophical grounding that don't sacrifice rigor, but do offer means to sort of go beyond what traditional logical tools can. So instead of having to make leaps of faith that sometimes don't work out and sometimes *might*, we can still make said leaps but in a new fashion that specifically uses many leaps (often contradictory) as a tool to get more information necessary to continue the argument via getting information on the structure of the argument itself, rather than taking the leaps conclusions as given. This then can allow for continuation past a certain kind of dead end (though some are truly unworkable) and can allow for a sort of reanalysis and deepening of the description/argument/interpretation as a whole that expands rather than sort of "collapsing in" on itself, and avoids the issue of being stuck able to argue anything from a given premise.
      That said, I will not include too much more in this comment since i am probabbly already over the character limit and I dont wanna eat up your whole day without giving you a chance to reply or ask for/not ask for further elaboration (update, i was over the character limit)

    i don’t think humans will ever stop making beautiful art and enjoying being creative but i also believe that ai has the amazing power to pull certain idea into life with a pinch of artistic expression, granted it’s been filled to the brim will the soul of all the human art it’s consumed and the question is if it’s breathing out new life or if it’s completely devoid of it now. have we killed that piece of art before a human could create it themselves or have we created something in between, maybe it’s good at concepts but won’t be able to be “creative” in inventing truly new ideas. but then i think about just how many iterations are possible with some of them, they can just run that shit and is something creative not bound to pop out every once in a while. i also don’t even know what being creative is to me, my dreams are creative sometimes but i find myself to be mostly not creative even though i consider myself to be an artist i draw a lot but mainly as a form of meditation and occasionally seriously. ai probably won’t express creativity like us because it’s brain will be running at 5 billion fully realized pictures a second that it can generate and create new ones with, i think we could also maybe stick that capability into its subconscious locking it into a more limited human like experience of calling ideas. i’m just spitballing and ai is super cool and fascinating sorry for the ramble 😂

      Quite a rounded perspective. Indeed, AI brings something new to art and will continue doing so, especially as artists gain AI literacy and start tinkering with it at a more fundamental level.
      Running the AI over and over and over, waiting for a creative output, is a bit strange ? Who's going to curate all its outputs to choose the ones that were creative ? What's great about artists is that they create and choose the creative outputs themselves.
      I agree with you that creativity is hard to define. That's what I'm starting to realize. We can define it as novelty. We can define it as a mix of quality and insight. But there's no definite answer.
      Interesting how at the end your idea of the subconscious could basically be a curating mechanism, choosing from the 5 billion pictures, the ones it wants to output.

    If a human is a machine, and a human is creative,
    then a machine can be creative.
    For me, useful creativity is combinatorial. [kimchi cookies? anyone?]
    It is based in the sense of mystical activity of lateral thinking that it appears unexaminable.
    As humans creating traditional art we are projecting shapes onto a canvas with a sense of communicating something.
    I'd characterize it as sharing an embedding. The embedding being meaningful as a message exists on the basis of certain priors about the mind of others.
    If I attempt to depict a piece of food, I want to make it delicious. That exists as an abstract guess at how to communicate a message of deliciousness based on assumptions of the taste of my audience (ie how do I show it is 'sweet', and to whom?). If I had never tasted food, this would be much harder. However, I suspect that a certain amount of deliciousness is roughly within scope for Diffusion models nonetheless. 🍓🍓
    At the end of the day, what's delicious is in the mouth of the beholder. 🍲

      That's a new and very interesting way to think about it..
      The models do basically share an embedding too. And the mapping between embeddings and images is a one-to-one mapping without randomness in most cases. So basically all the images the model can create is equivalent to all the embeddings we manage to find through textual description. So creating art becomes just having an embedding in your head and looking for the same embedding in the AI model, by giving it the right text.
      Thanks to this new perspective, two insights appear :
      1- AI doesn’t have the same range of embeddings as a human being, obviously. We combine together information coming from the five senses, together with memory, cognition, emotion, and all sorts of other brain systems we don’t have names for yet. (as you rightly mentioned already)
      2- We’re trying to look for this embedding in the AI model by using text. Even in a perfect world where the embedding space of AI models is the same as that of humans, the fact of guiding it through text will leave its mark, its taste on the generated image compared to creating it by hand. Thus making artists stand out as the average spectator becomes bored with the AI "look".

      @@ArtPostAI I've gotten it to work with virtually all of the models.
      Some emojis definitely work better than others.
      Stable diffusion is able to use them, and I think Disco-diffusion might as well (I vaguely recall).
      I suspect that any model that uses standard CLIP can do it.
      Mitsua diffusion fails (so far), but that's the first one I've found that didn't work. I think mitsua uses openCLIP for text embeddings.

      @@ArtPostAI As for thoughts on it, its a 'fun' feature. One similar thing I've found is that foreign alphabets have an interesting effect. For example if you add Cyrillic into the prompt, the results may come out with a bit of Russian flavor.
      Apparently, CLIP has implicit representations for certain odd character sequences that are not strictly words.

      AI Art is a new tool, and it brings with it a whole array of new possibilities yet impossible for humans.
      The point of this channel is to find out how we artists should change in reaction to it.
      My intuition is that there will be many innovations in traditional art sparked by the challenge of AI art.
      Clearly, for now, AI isn't conscious. So saying humans have something it doesn't isn't denying it its inherent living value.
      My colleagues who are world-class researchers in consciousness say AI isn't yet conscious.
      BUT we just might come to that point I guess.
      The future is both worrying and exciting.
