The song's lyrics are something that should be taught at universities. And Hammill should be made (if he already isn't) a Honorate Doctor of Music. And having seen him in Stuttgart, April 2007, so simple, emaciated and friendly, I propose nothing less than a canonization of this driven artist! Do I exaggerate? No, but he always has. And I thank him and his colleagues warmly for that.
The comments below praised already. But it can't be repeated enough: PHENOMENAL performance of VdGG's classic. Good sound quality and interesting "portrait"-style camera.
Banda estupenda .
I suppose the difference between VDGG and many other bands around in this era was that they were much more of a 'song' band rather than being a bunch of instrumentalists showing off their technique. Hammill's songs are always the focal point and the music rarely strays from being 'interpretive'. I always felt their music had a mimetic quality: things such as Lighthouse Keepers where they imitate foghorns and the churning sound of a ship's engine.
i'M ALWAYS SAYIN'- NOT ENOUGH FLUTE IN ROCK NOWADAYS THANX FOR THIS UPLOAD-i WAITED & LISYENED ALONE IN MY ROOM IN THE '70'S FOE EVERY lp DANG i LOVE vdgg JUST THE BEST WHO'DA THUNK THIS WOULD BE HERE FOR ALL TO HEAR N SEE!?! WOW! pLEASURE TO SEE pETER AT THE TROUBADOR IN la, THINK IT WAS '76, i WAS 16 NEVER FORGET IT LOVE TO ALL
i'm lying to my bed, watchin the sky through my window with a single cigarette. Expecting that she'll like that song too... How silly i am. Of course she won't. When does someone i care like this anyway? All time favourite. Always will be
I'm a woman and I love VDGG, and this is one of my all time favorites. I agree not many women like VDGG. I have to admit it was my husband who introduced me to the band long time ago and at first I couldn't listen to the music. It was too overwhelming, as for most people who here them for the first time. But because I already was into Prog and metal music when I was young, after a short while I got totally hooked and still am. There is hope... don't give up
I lost count of the amount of acid and magic mushroom trips I had with my mates back in the 70’s, with VDGG and Hammill’s solo albums as the soundtrack! “Still Life”, “Pawn Hearts”, “Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night”, “The Silent Corner, The Empty Stage” and “Nadir’s Big Chance” being particular acid favourites! 🍄 👌😎
Here at the glass - all the usual problems, all the habitual farce. You ask, in uncertain voice, what you should do, as if there were a choice but to carry on miming the song and hope that it all works out right. Tonight it all seems so strange - my spirit feels rigid, my body deranged; still that's only from one point of view and we can't have illusion between me and you, my constant friend, ever close at hand - you and the undercover man. I reflect: 'It's very strange to be going through this change with no idea of what it's all been about except in the context of time...' Oh, but I shirk it, I've half a mind not to work it all out. Is this madness just the recurring wave of total emotion, or a hide for the undercover man, or a litany - all the signs are there of fervent devotion - or the cracking of the dam? It's cracked; smashed and bursting over you, there was no reason to expect such disaster. Now, panicking, you burst for air, drowning, you know you care for nothing and no-one but yourself and would deny even this hand which stretches out towards you to help. But would I leave you in this moment of your trial? Is it my fault that I'm here to see you crying? These phantom figures all around you should have told you, you should have found out by now, if you hadn't gone and tried to do it all by yourself. Even now we are not lost: if you look out at the night you'll see the colours and the lights seem to say people are not far away, at least in distance, and it's only our own dumb resistance that's making us stay. When the madness comes let it flood on down and over me sweetly, let it drown the parts of me weak and blessed and damned, let it slake my life, let it take my soul and living completely, let it be who I am. There may not be time for us all to run in tandem together - the horizon calls with its parallel lines. It may not be right for you to have and hold in one way forever and yet you still have time, you still have time.
25 years ago Peter Hammill went in Turin (Italy) to play in the Colosseo Teather. I was there and i wonder that there were more or less thirty people in all the teather. Italian people do not appreciate this kind of singer. Hammill really is an excellent singer.
True! First three more mental, conceptual ;) VDGG and Genesis more performative, yes. Top stuff all of them, with Floys somehow really in between the spiritual and the emotional; this said, they generate a sort of circle, Floyd in the middle, the others circling around. Nt that Floyd us better, it is just more stable, ambient, while these other four motherfuckers clearly explode in rhythmic patterns, sonic buildings, structural provocations, etc. Thanks for your comment! Really made me rethink my relation with these TOP FIVE agents of my musical life.
@arnaud360 ...Fair play to ya...Good, no, make that GREAT music has no shelf life...Im delighted to see there are young people who are getting as much from this music as i did when i was was in my teens....
@chrisguygeezer: Yeah, never underrated. In fact, I would say that those who listen to VdGG would rate them quite highly (no pun intended!). I know I do. I saw them last year in chicago, and as a 30 something year old, it was, truly, a dream come true. They had incredible energy and even w/o Dave Jackson were stunning to see live!
No they were never underrated, they had a select audience who just adored them, and still do. They had a niche all to themselves, timeless with the their brand of jazz-prog music. I so hope Jackson gets back sometime, cos they don't quite cut it without him I would love to see them at Glasto before they just don't want to do it any more. I can't understand why thy have this magnetism for me, but they just are such class.
@alexagosto1962 Seriously, here in San Diego Cal., I thought I was the only one that ever heard of this band,,, and loved it. In my various contacts with what I thought were true music lovers I'd ask them if they ever heard of VDGG, not one replied yes. I'd of course offer the idea to get Godbluff and try out that Arrow. It was like I had a band all to myself.
Sometimes prog rock, VDGG, perhaps especially so ELP, .... songs seem to go nowhere. I don't think this particular song is expressive of the finest of what Prog Rock, or VDGG, has to offer. Their stunner is "Afterwards", imo.
I don't see that way... Hammill's is soft, sweet, kind of 'velvet', though powerful... Halford screams a lot, his voice is acid and rough. But, well, that's the way I see (hear)
Fantastic, but I can not understand the words on the final closure of the song, They are sung as far away and drowned in music, He is repeating the last line of the text? thank you:)

For me, this is simply the best rock singer ever.
Old memories!
One of the greatest band of all years, with King Crimson
Nothing compares to this. Pure and deep emotions.
Flute, Organ, vox, bass pedals, sax and perfect atmosphere.... Great!
He's got such a great voice, there's so much fucking emotion in it
Sublime . VDGG at their finest . I was privileged to see them in concert during this period.
The : " UNDERCOVER MAN " ...
A very meaningful and talented Composition ! Never a Dull moment ! Carlito ♦️ U. S. A. ✓
The comments below praised already. But it can't be repeated enough: PHENOMENAL performance of VdGG's classic. Good sound quality and interesting "portrait"-style camera.
Great camera work, almost unique.
Banda estupenda .
Fantastic Band!

Great performance. One of my all time favorites - and by that I mean both the band and the song
Filmed! Miracle. Wonderful images of an extraordinary song. Thank You!

listen to Jethro tull, I'm sure you'll like it
myearsloveit lol, jethro tull mostly with flute.flute is part of rock
Fantastic !! I'm travelling in time back to 1975...
i'm lying to my bed, watchin the sky through my window with a single cigarette. Expecting that she'll like that song too... How silly i am.
Of course she won't. When does someone i care like this anyway?
All time favourite. Always will be
You are not alone bro, i'll never let go the first woman i met who likes vdgg. If it exists...

Ödül Özçelik she does exist: me 😉 and my husband will indeed never let me go 😀
there is hope and there is still honest and very good music, communication, we can get rid of the demons.
well, we have only one shot, or do we?
Great song, great band!
I wish I wasn't the only person at my high school who's heard of, let alone LOVES, pH/VdGG. It's so freakin' lonely.

really? Italy was the first country where the VDGG were really successful
@@mariminu8819 Seconding this comment - if it wasn't for the Italians buying VdGG's music we may never heard them today.
thank you very very much for uploading!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed!
It's been decades since I first heard VDGG and came across a beat up album of theirs. Never saw them live. Wish I had. Incredibly complex.
@arnaud360 ...Fair play to ya...Good, no, make that GREAT music has no shelf life...Im delighted to see there are young people who are getting as much from this music as i did when i was was in my teens....

🤩🤩🤩🤩 fucking classic
phenomenal!
@billpleska and the best "rock" composer!!!
Progressive Art Rock has got its own stars, one of them is Peter Hammill with his band(s). Excellent!!!!
