This would be a great engine for a locomotive. I think, many years back, EMD used the CAT 3612 as an experiment in one of their test pilot SD40 or GP40 locomotives, in lieu of the normally offered EMD 645 series, 2 stroke family, V16 engine and the CAT 3612 diesel performed very well. At present, in year 2024, the limitation first and foremost, would be emissions. Aside of that, it's good to see that Caterpillar does have a good locomotive engine nonetheless, to compete with the GE 7FDL series, 4 stroke engine family and with the EMD 710 series, 2 stroke engine family.
