Here is a drum key hack I use to replace drum heads .
Some drum keys can be used with a cordless screw gun.
NASCAR pit crew speed, without the head cramps.
I have used the taiko-1 midi to other drum modules/samples/drum synths and it work very well. It even outputs midi cc data based on where youre hitting on the surface

Thank you so much for your review on the Timbre Taiko and Taiko-1, Adam! I happened to have both. 😆. I also have a Taiwanese made Kaminari Taiko (in the hitting surface size of a chu taiko) I bought at a NATC market place. I use the Timbre and Kaminari as practice pads especially when I need 3 drum surfaces in a set (in addition to my cow hide practice pad I got from World Sphere). I use the Taiko-1 as a katsugi okedo, and also as a Hana Hachijo drum on my Hana stand. I would say I ended up using the Taiko-1 a lot more because of the classes I take. I'm also going to take the Taiko-1 for a real in-person performance tomorrow, something I would not dream of doing with my other 2 electric drum heads. ☺️. BTW, at the Taiko-1 assembly party Ringtaro hosted last May, he let everyone use his tool (I think it's a small socket wrench) to tighten the Taiko-1. And it was much easier than the cheap wrench it comes from. In case you want to take your Taiko-1 apart again. 🤗
Marinda, thank you! I could kick myself for not thinking of using a different tool - like a socket wrench, duh! Definitely should help with some leverage off to the side instead of straight down. Definitely going to look for something now...
I was curious about the Kaminari Taiko; I remember them being at at least a couple of marketplaces but didn't know anything about them or anyone that bought one. It would be nice to have something like your setup with a chu/shime feel to practice multiple drums with headphones!
@@TicTacTaiko Having tried all 3 electric head. The Taiko-1 is definitely most realistic to hit. Whereas the other 2 are a bit too hard , feels like hitting metal with a thin rubber on top), so more difficult to play fast with the right momentum.
Hi, Marinda! How much does the Kaminari taiko cost? I've seen a couple videos on it since I read your comment but I couldn't find any information in English about it.
What you describe as the decal on your KTT is just the protective cover film, I'm sure it'll look good as new once you peel it all off. Great review by the way! These instruments seem to be at a very early stage of development, and just sound (to my ears) like multisample triggers rather than 'real' instruments that take account of the physics of the skin and how the decaying waves interact. It seems incredible that Roland didn't use a rotatable console design for katsugi players, hopefully future revisions will correct this.
Thomas, you're the second to tell me it's just a film, so I definitely stand corrected! Or maybe I'll keep it and say it's artistic? Haha.
These are definitely "1st-gen" products, and I'm hoping that it'll lead into more and more realistic looking/sounding models. I would say though, that headphones make things sound way better than any amp and you do get a better sense for things like decay and placement of the hit.
What does (or might) a rotatable console design look like?

You mention how "grueling" the setup was for the Taiko 1 and that you never want to disassemble it for transport. Well... I find myself in a situation where I've bought a second hand Taiko 1 in Japan for a real bargain price and need to do exactly this to get it home as I don't think my airline will accept it as cabin baggage fully assembled. I've tried undoing the nuts with a standard Pearl drum key, but they won't budge. The key just spins on the nut (either they're in super tight or the nuts are stripped from the previous owner over tightening). Have you got any advice on what I can do to loosen them?
Well...damn, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not sure what kind of drum key the Taiko-1 uses, but it seems weird that the nuts would be stripped as most people aren't taking it down/building it up THAT much. Hmm. My first instinct is to say the drum key isn't a good fit, but I know pliers and most other tools aren't going to get in at a good angle. If there's a music store you can get to, that might help/they might be able to help?
@@TicTacTaiko thanks for your reply! I'm glad to report I found a music store that had a Roland proprietary key in stock for sale separately. It was a real mission to find let me tell you! I went from Kyoto to Osaka to Kobe through several stores trying various keys, none of which fit, until I found the Roland key. It fit perfectly and worked straight away, which makes me kinda mad at Roland for designing it in such an unfriendly way.
My Taiko 1 heads and the CPU will be safely in my arms on my flight tomorrow, with the rods checked in down below.

Thank you Adam. Very helpful comparison of the two drums for a NooB like me. In your opinion, could the Taiko-1 keep me entertained as a hobby if I am NOT playing with an in-person Taiko ensemble? Most of my prospective hobby drumming would be playing by myself to (pre-recorded) RUclips Taiko ensemble videos. Can you provide your experienced opinion please on this type of use of the Taiko-1 for a Taiko NooB like me? Thanks for any help you can provide - Will.
The Taiko-1 is definitely entertaining! You get a ton of sounds, a built-in-metronome with many options, and can pipe in music from another source in through Bluetooth if you wanted to play along to something that way as well.
And you have the choice to play it katsugi okedo style, as a single drum, or two drum surfaces. It's pricey entertainment, but has a lot of depth and functionality!
@@TicTacTaiko Thank you Adam for your reply. None of the numerous Roland marketing videos that I've seen demonstrate examples of how a single-user could make use for the Taiko-1. I find only ensemble performances, with a couple of one-off private RUclips "live-loopers" using he TK-1.

Happy to be a resource! For me, the Taiko-1 is great for practicing taiko without bothering the neighbors, and having the option to play in a couple of different "styles". And with amplification, it could be as loud as/louder than any real taiko, which has its uses, too.
So do I understand correctly Adam that neither of these products are capable of outputting sound to wireless headphones? If I understood your video, neither supports Bluetooth output natively? I wonder if I could connect a Bluetooth transmitter to an audio out port on either that would allow me to drum with wireless headphones? Or maybe the latency of the Bluetooth connection would be too delayed to be practical? Thank you - Will
Good question! I use a Wireless Guitar Transmitter/Receiver set up to make the Taiko-1 go through the drum amp, but I don't think you'd want to use that for headphones given the size of each unit. And Bluetooth does not go OUT from the Taiko-1, only IN, so you'd not be able to use anything with Bluetooth in that regard.
There might be a way to rig up someway to get the transmitter to go to a device that *then* transmits to wireless headphones, but I'm not savvy enough to know what's possible - and yeah, latency probably becomes an issue that that point.
As for the kaDON Timbre Taiko, there is no wireless/bluetooth capability at all.
@@TicTacTaiko Thank you Adam for your reply. That is helpful to me as the inability to use wireless headphones with the Taiko-1 would be a "show-stopper" for my use case. I have to believe that there are many other prospective customers who would also have a high need for headphone-only playing and going back to wired seems like going back to the 70s technologically.
No worries! This is a 1st-gen product from Roland, so I'm hoping there's more to come in later versions, especially with Bluetooth.
I know my amp is bluetooth-capable, so I wonder if there's a way for headphones to sync up with an amp? It's a bit of a roundabout method, if it's possible...
Why they discontinued Taiko 1? Are they replacing with new product?
Hi Neil, I can't find anything saying that the Taiko-1 has been discontinued. Where did you hear that?
