I'm wondering if saved data can be transferred to the Ally X), and maybe a couple of more games.
I do love my OLED Steam Deck - but the Ally X lasts a lot longer away from the wall [or without a separate battery bank] which is nice. I usually have a 10k mAh battery bank on the back of my steam deck giving me much more life but making it much heavier. The Ally X includes the battery and it doesn't feel terribly heavy. That said - the OLED is nice and the convenience of Steam is nice ... but I mostly just use my Ally as a Steam device ha!
For call of duty mw3 on handheld with egpu Go into device manager and disable the and graphics then call of duty will let you run full screen and your performance will more than double Just remember to re enable your and driver when your done
@@Healthy_TokiHdmi sounds cool but fact of the matter is you can just use a USB C to HDMI/Displayport instead, way more modular to simply include an extra 3.1 USB C port instead, and it means the devs dont have to pay HDMI royalties.
Ally was 499 at Best Buy. Got the X for 799. by the time you get a battery pack for longer battery life on the original and more storage, you're more expensive than the X which as better battery life and 24 gigs of ram, 1 gb storage. LOVING the X, playing Steam, Game pass, World of Warcraft along with tons of emulation on it. it's a fantastic handheld so far.
Steam Deck gang. But I may have to get an Ally for windows-only games. ROG releases consoles too often though. I can also download the windows drives for the deck, but disk space....oh you beautiful creature.
From the sound of the battery life statements you didn't turn off CPU boost? It massively increases battery life since it stops useless watts being sent to the CPU.
I'm glad all these new gaming handouts are coming out and creating competention amongst each other. I will always choose the Steam Deck with no Windows in sight.
I just got an Ally X. I'm pleasantly surprised. It comes very close to the Steam Deck for me. But ultimately Steam Deck still has the ergonomics down pat as well as control. User interface I think its slightly irrelevant. The clunkiness makes way for versatility. But add a trackpad to the Ally and it nips that clunkiness in the bud.
My PC with a GeForce 2060 just broke down. So I’m probably going to sell that and an older GPU I have laying around and get an Rog Ally X. Should be interesting to use it as a Main/portable Gaming Computer Setup.
Really sad playstation or xbox haven't come out with a handheld yet. Number one thing keeping me from buying one of these is having to purchase my favorite games I ALREADY OWN again just to start all over
I'm still waiting for Legion Go. Nothing compares to that screen. If They had the screen options of the legion, I'd be all over this, but 1080p for $800 is wild in 2024. I will probably still buy one because I can't be helped, but Legion is my daily driver. Rumors say it will have an Oled.
These handheld devices are exposing the flaws of Windows as a gaming platform. More games are supported on windows not because it is inherently better, but because it is the most famous OS. I hope this competition brings forth improvements both on Windows and Linux front. I'm happy with my OG Ally for now. I'll wait for 2-3 generations for things to improve significantly.
@@blissurzu7216 which is why I said famous OS. If Microsoft had also supported Vulkan natively in Windows, we might have seen it being used much more I suspect.
Hey Bob, love the content as always! The handheld gaming scene is heating up in 2024, and I’m stuck between the Steam Deck OLED and the regular ASUS ROG Ally. For your next video, could you do one of your awesome comparison videos to help us figure out which one of both is more worthy in 2024? Your reviews are always on point and super fun to watch. Can’t wait to see what you think!
I think I may have commented something like this on a previous video, so apologies if I sound like a broken record, but I'd be interested in seeing a non-spec-based comparison of all the major PC handhelds, or better yet, a specs-pros-and-cons VS non-specs-pros-and-cons comparison between all the major PC handhelds Like, I'd bet the Steam Deck is relatively low on the specs side, but probably has one of the highest if not THE highest amount of first-party and third-party support for hardware, software, accessories, community mods/fixes, and so on (aside from the lack of Windows), which might give it the edge if you're not looking to play a bunch of high-requirement games but DO want to do emulation on it or have as much compatibility as possible or whatever; same goes for anything else divorced from the machine itself that might affect user experience that you can think of I guess it would be hard to quantify and rank though... Also, maybe in the same way that you don't need the highest specs ever, just high enough to play the games you want, maybe you don't care that the Steam Deck has more cases available to buy than the Asus ROG Ally, because you only need one good one! Thanks for keeping us updated on these things either way though, I'd like to get one ONE DAY and it's nice to check in on the space every once in a while in the meantime
@@JorgeChavezX I'm genuinely surprised it's THAT bad then! Although I suppose it's actually pretty old now, especially compared to AROGAX which has of course just released
@@JorgeChavezX its not worse in every way. linux is still a good OS for gaming and HDR looks amazing on the steam deck OLED. Also no other PC handheld comes close to the deck when it comes to availability. Refurbished steam decks are cheap and nothing else comes close to price/perforamnce. You can literally pick up a used steam deck for the same price as a base switch
When it comes to software support, with a Windows handheld you get access to the entire Windows catalog. Not to mention, it arguably has much better software support since everyone games on Windows, so if there is a mod that fixes an issue, you'll be able to just use it like any other person gaming on a desktop PC. People complain about Windows on handhelds because of lack of a decent sleep mode and the touch targets are smaller. That's literally what every argument against it ultimately boils down to. Especially now with the Ally X with its absurd (for a handheld PC) battery life.
As someone who is unlikely to ever buy one of these, I appreciate the vids. How about a 3D printed dock that the EGPU slots into with the device? Make it for the Legion too. I’ll probably get a steam deck when my laptop dies.
keep in mind steam deck oled has insane pwm flicker and for some people me included it will give u eye strain and headaches i did not know i had this issue till ii got the oled
Just FYI, the ROG Ally is already new to buy for 550. The specked down version is also available, for 350. So 800 is a tough sell honestly for any system like this.
All I know is I looked at some best buy reviews and people already had dead pixels and ruined screens from the box, I rather a steamdeck just more beefed up the oled on the steamdeck is unreal
Something that would be cool is checking out the OS that turns the ROG Ally X into a steam deck and than compare the two to see witch is the ultimate Steam deck
I’ve seen other videos that the extra battery is different depending on software. But to give you an idea, emulating ps360 in the old ally (25 wats) can barely reach 1 hour. Now is 3. So in some cases there is more than double
The only thing I could complain about the Ally X, that the Legion Go improved is that above all else... why do all these handhelds refuse to put a nice kickstand or a kickstand at all (like the Switch)? Also a X-Input on the face controller off switch should be implemented to turn off the controller's X-input device and not take over the Player 1 if you decide to plug this to a station and play on a bunch of Bluetooth controllers... I don't think based on what I remember on the original Ally you could disable them, but it wouldn't turn them off as a X-input device... the Legion Go had this as a byproduct of FPS mode switch, it turned of the X-Input driver and turned the face controllers to Mouse & Keyboard... quickly solving the hurdle by chance. Hope the Legion Go X or 2 or Pro... learns from all of this, and provide the good changes the Ally X did from the former Ally. Such as 2280 drives, bigger batteries & more RAM for more bandwidth for mostly more stable frametimings and less stutter. If they could also change the screen to landscape 16:9 that would be swell... while still keeping it around an 8" screen even if ends up a bit wider, but to solve the finicky issue of native portrait displays... and if they decide to a little more, change the Z1 Extreme for a 7840U/8840U so we can get standard driver support and not wait months for this OEM slow driver updates... let us get normal & consistently released AMD regular drivers, so I don't have to sideload. On a Legiong Go X/Pro/Super/2 Keep the awesome kickstand, keep the FPS switch, keep the detachable controls, keep the mouse touchpad those thing made my Legion Go preferred system & stand out over the original Ally besides the slightly better battery and slightly bigger screen despite the portrait display headaches I had to deal with and mitigate through software... but do make all these improvements that the Ally X made over the X, the tangible big improvements. More RAM, More Battery & 2280 SSDs.
The asus rog ally has vrr, which provides a smoother experience over just oled. No one likes screen tearing. Also old heads often dont play the most popular games, so if you arent a old head, stick with a windows handheld. Fornite, ea sports, valorant, cod, will not work on the steamdeck. Sony games require a launcher that doesnt work on linux.
VRR can still introduce judder or micro-stuttering at low FPS due to inconsistent frame times and pacing, even if the average FPS is within the VRR range (e.g., 70-90 FPS) With games that run at 30-50 fps VRR does almost not help at all. And at its designed for FPS (70+ fps) you could just active VSYNC in the games menu anyways with little to no impact. VRR is overrated on Ally
I want one, but in the 500 dollar range. Either the 1gb Legion Go, or the Ally X. Anything more and i just cant see myself getting one over a gaming laptop, and at that point i feel i wouldn't want one as much.
Hey I got two USB-C ports on my Steam Deck, and 2 USB-A! All I had to do was strap a hub to the back of my deck with the Dbrand universal mount lol. It sounds stupid, and it looks stupid; especially after I plug in the dongle for my headphones. But its suprisingly comfortable to use.
The battery is the biggest QoL upgrade. As a SD OLED owner running Windows and SteamOS I can't justify the price but it's great to see real competition, especially seeing how well Bazzite runs on the X. This might just be the model to get if the price comes down over the next year. The only issue then is these current models will get successors... I'm still not interesting in seeing what the Steam Deck 2 will be.
I'm seriously think about getting this as my first windows based pc handheld I don't really like running windows on my steam deck oled and I don't have a windows pc
I think it depends on what you want and how you might use the device. The Ally X doesn't have a keyboard or mouse but is more portable. A gaming laptop has a keyboard built in. You can upgrade the RAM and add in an extra SSD. If you think you'll play on a table then a laptop might be better for you. If you think you'll want to play on a sofa or in bed then an Ally X might be better for you.
Why is it so hard to find an eGPU enclosure in 2024? There are a ton of handheld PC's coming to the market that could easily increase sales. Maybe they were too far ahead of the game and got stumped.
I hear you on the "but I probably have more play time on my legion go for...whatever reason" Owning a legion go is weird. It is honestly my favorite gaming device that I own, but there's almost no living person I would recommend it to over a steam deck oled or ally x.
I like the rog ally for what i use it for due to my new lifestyle but my smol hands get crampy for lengthy gameplay. I got my ally z1 from Thailand, and from the 1st experience, the ergonomics was the only issue for me, and i could see the stick rubbing off the edges and the plane had an outlet under the seat. (I think they only have those on international flights). Im really considering upgrading to an ally x cuz of the ergonomic updates. My ps portal is more comfortable than the ally z1 so theres that
Any improvement when it comes to running Windows 11 on the X? Like a specific game version of the OS w/o all the worthless bells and whistles that Microsoft loves to stick into Windows?
I'm waiting til some company comes out with a white shell for the ally X, asus comes out with a white ally X, or just an actually "ally 2" or whatever they'll call it. The only thing I care about is that it has 2 usb c ports but I personally want a white device.
Can you do like using the ally x as your daily computer using monitor keyboard mouse. Like doing productivity work, watching movies or streaming stuff, as well as gaming on it. Considering to replace my old gaming laptop with this. But not sure if it’s practical enough or not. Thanks wulff
@@epsileth because ally x was actually bulid from the orgianl ally they put two bettery life and you can see content warless between the two bettery about the SD card because they said because the system of ally problem not hardware
With devices like the Steamdeck available, it's going to be very difficult for Nintendo to give people any compelling reasons to get a Switch 2. I get the feeling they're just going to rely even more on exclusive titles and DRM and lawsuits.

That said - the OLED is nice and the convenience of Steam is nice ... but I mostly just use my Ally as a Steam device ha!
200 second ad is crazy... I hope you got a massive bag along with that screen.
Nice shout-out to Paramus, NJ! Random but love it.
he from joisey?
I felt called out when you mentioned Balatro while I was playing it on my second monitor
Bob idk how every week your bring it with the ads but I swear you could sell tape n make it halarious to watch!!
For call of duty mw3 on handheld with egpu
Go into device manager and disable the and graphics then call of duty will let you run full screen and your performance will more than double
Just remember to re enable your and driver when your done
I remember a time when this channel was mostly Switch content. Man, time goes by so fast.
the thing I want the most for the steam deck is a second usb port
Ports are welcome. I want at least 2 usb c, a full size hdmi, and a headphone jack. That makes these devices a lot more flexible as PCs in the field.
@@Healthy_Toki give me a midi in and midi out while you're at it
@@Healthy_TokiHdmi sounds cool but fact of the matter is you can just use a USB C to HDMI/Displayport instead, way more modular to simply include an extra 3.1 USB C port instead, and it means the devs dont have to pay HDMI royalties.
@@SergioSergio12345USB C compresses HDMI and display port
HDMI and Ethernet, also USB 3.5
Now THAT is a true upgrade
Music from Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, excellent choice 🤌
Ally was 499 at Best Buy. Got the X for 799. by the time you get a battery pack for longer battery life on the original and more storage, you're more expensive than the X which as better battery life and 24 gigs of ram, 1 gb storage. LOVING the X, playing Steam, Game pass, World of Warcraft along with tons of emulation on it. it's a fantastic handheld so far.
improved D-pad for fighting games gives it the edge over the old one and the steam deck
I am so proud of you son two ! You know big words like Versatility! #wulffdendad
My rog ally x comming today
Easy to say but for real it's not real
I just got an Ally X. I'm pleasantly surprised. It comes very close to the Steam Deck for me. But ultimately Steam Deck still has the ergonomics down pat as well as control. User interface I think its slightly irrelevant. The clunkiness makes way for versatility. But add a trackpad to the Ally and it nips that clunkiness in the bud.
I hear the Chaos Theory menu music homie.
My patience is paying off. I knew this would be the next step in better handheld striking the perfect balance in all areas. YESSS show your stuff Asus
My PC with a GeForce 2060 just broke down. So I’m probably going to sell that and an older GPU I have laying around and get an Rog Ally X. Should be interesting to use it as a Main/portable Gaming Computer Setup.
Great Stuff, as always!
Really sad playstation or xbox haven't come out with a handheld yet. Number one thing keeping me from buying one of these is having to purchase my favorite games I ALREADY OWN again just to start all over
I think Sony would do an amazing job w all their experience w the vita!
I love that it can play Gamepass games but I'm holding out a bit to see if Microsoft is going to reveal their handheld and maybe the Switch 2
Honestly want to get this mostly to emulate switch, thus pretty muchusing it as a switch 2 😅
Bro no bs, i didnt know there was a oled 4k 240hz. Dang you. Now i have to buy this
I'm still waiting for Legion Go. Nothing compares to that screen. If They had the screen options of the legion, I'd be all over this, but 1080p for $800 is wild in 2024. I will probably still buy one because I can't be helped, but Legion is my daily driver. Rumors say it will have an Oled.
being sponsored by best buy is actually a big W
Crickets and spiders in the basement?? Sounds like a job for SharkDog to scare off! one bark a day scares the doctor away!
It’s the best system I’ve ever used
These handheld devices are exposing the flaws of Windows as a gaming platform. More games are supported on windows not because it is inherently better, but because it is the most famous OS. I hope this competition brings forth improvements both on Windows and Linux front. I'm happy with my OG Ally for now. I'll wait for 2-3 generations for things to improve significantly.
yes! can't wait for all the changes that will happen to optimize the handheld experience!
directx has been a big success story not just because its famous
Direct X is a Microsoft API built natively into windows. Fame has nothing to do with it.
@@blissurzu7216 which is why I said famous OS. If Microsoft had also supported Vulkan natively in Windows, we might have seen it being used much more I suspect.
@DivjotSingh I forgot about Vulkan. They're open source right? Or was that OpenGL. Can't remember.
I wouldn't mind if ASUS keep the same features, but adding A USB-A port and a bigger screen would be amazing for the next one, at least for me.
Some other things, faster charging, better speakers, better 360• actuating rear buttons.
The better the performance on these apu chips the more boost we get on our AMD gpus Ive noticed
I think I may have commented something like this on a previous video, so apologies if I sound like a broken record, but I'd be interested in seeing a non-spec-based comparison of all the major PC handhelds, or better yet, a specs-pros-and-cons VS non-specs-pros-and-cons comparison between all the major PC handhelds
Like, I'd bet the Steam Deck is relatively low on the specs side, but probably has one of the highest if not THE highest amount of first-party and third-party support for hardware, software, accessories, community mods/fixes, and so on (aside from the lack of Windows), which might give it the edge if you're not looking to play a bunch of high-requirement games but DO want to do emulation on it or have as much compatibility as possible or whatever; same goes for anything else divorced from the machine itself that might affect user experience that you can think of
I guess it would be hard to quantify and rank though...
The steam deck performs like 50% worse than the rog ally and has a far worse screen and operating system, its worse in every way
@@JorgeChavezX I'm genuinely surprised it's THAT bad then!
@@ScrubsWasTaken That's also a good point, and one in which the Steam Deck's age actually helps it
When it comes to software support, with a Windows handheld you get access to the entire Windows catalog. Especially now with the Ally X with its absurd (for a handheld PC) battery life.
lol I was looking for this for two months …. I only trust you and ETA prime
As someone who is unlikely to ever buy one of these, I appreciate the vids. How about a 3D printed dock that the EGPU slots into with the device? Make it for the Legion too. I’ll probably get a steam deck when my laptop dies.
The one thing I hate about the Ally is the bezels on the screen. It's so close to being perfect
keep in mind steam deck oled has insane pwm flicker and for some people me included it will give u eye strain and headaches i did not know i had this issue till ii got the oled
Still enjoying my LCD Deck! 4 hours in Skyrim Fallout 4, 3 hours + in RE4 and 6+ hours for emu Deck.
Spider crickets! Living in a basement so the struggle is real :)
Something that would be cool is checking out the OS that turns the ROG Ally X into a steam deck and than compare the two to see witch is the ultimate Steam deck
"Look what they need to mimic a fraction of Steam OS's power"- Gabe
Good stuff
Splinter cell chaos theory on top
VRR can still introduce judder or micro-stuttering at low FPS due to inconsistent frame times and pacing, even if the average FPS is within the VRR range (e.g., 70-90 FPS)
With games that run at 30-50 fps VRR does almost not help at all. And at its designed for FPS (70+ fps) you could just active VSYNC in the games menu anyways with little to no impact.
VRR is overrated on Ally
@@m4ko288this is the funniest comment I've read in a while. VRR overrated 🤣🤣🤣
I'm young and don't play those games because they suck more D than a Twitter OF TWINK
Vrr is marginally overrated, it's mostly advertising friendly
Ich habe a SD Oled - and Ally Z1E - VRR is such a difference - same Frames - so much better on Ally.
ad ends 8:23
best buy better have dropped racks for that ad
You're a weird kink, Bob. Lol, much love. Thanks for your weekly videos, big Bob!
But if I buy that LG monitor, I won't be able to blame my screen for my atrocious skills...
Id love a steamdeck but i gotta go with the ally just for the games and performance.
Should i buy the ASUS rog ally x,instead of a gaming laptop that has a rtx 4060?
I hear you on the "but I probably have more play time on my legion go for...whatever reason"
Owning a legion go is weird. It is honestly my favorite gaming device that I own, but there's almost no living person I would recommend it to over a steam deck oled or ally x.
brought 2 X's but tbh not worth the upgrade over OG. im seeing minor minor improvements. Best thing is its black.
I have a USB-C to Displayport cable. You don't need more than that.
Steam deck OLED is my favorite. But I can’t play destiny and COD which are my 2 main games. So I’m
Excited for the ally x
I setup Steam Remote Play and changed the settings on our HTPC/media server so I can leave it on 24/7 and get my Destiny 2 fix whenever needed
@@Collin_J yea. Streaming games doesn’t work for me. I want it installed on the device.
Hi! Cool review, thanks! Can you tell me what's the name of the folding split keyboard model you have on your desk?
I'm waiting til some company comes out with a white shell for the ally X, asus comes out with a white ally X, or just an actually "ally 2" or whatever they'll call it. The only thing I care about is that it has 2 usb c ports but I personally want a white device.
How about battery ?
i would love for valve to work with rockstar and activison to help them optimize gta 4 & 5 and call of duty to work on the steam deck
Tempting but im waiting for Lenovo legion go 2
Can you do like using the ally x as your daily computer using monitor keyboard mouse. Like doing productivity work, watching movies or streaming stuff, as well as gaming on it. Considering to replace my old gaming laptop with this. But not sure if it’s practical enough or not. Thanks wulff

With devices like the Steamdeck available, it's going to be very difficult for Nintendo to give people any compelling reasons to get a Switch 2. I get the feeling they're just going to rely even more on exclusive titles and DRM and lawsuits.
