My children are 43, 41,38 and 35. I homeschooled/unschooled them. No testing, little book work. Lots of reading to them. Some days we'd pick a book and read all day with just breaks for meals. My oldest son was chopping wood for the house at 9 and baking bread, starting generators (!),heading off on his moped at 14 going farm to farm until someone hired him for part time work. My daughter was selling her baking at 10 and also hauling wood and starting generators. I was so indoctrinated from my own schooling that I didn't know if I had caused them harm. Well it turned out that all of them have turned out just wonderfully. Always put in management positions not matter where they work (telephone industry, landscaping, registries, firefighter). They don't need the majority of what is taught in the government babysitting services aka school.

I homeschooled when it was really unpopular and met much negativity . My kids are all adults now. I learned more teaching them than I ever learned in public school and my kids excelled.
Good luck to your family. It is an excellent choice

RUclips is a great platform to learn almost anything... All you need is the curiosity to look up every new term, method, everything... And the willingness to put it into practice. I taught myself beekeeping that way (I heard several farmers say it was the hardest livestock to manage, it doesn't feel that way TBH). Soon I will be able to leave this cubicle job that became soul crushingly boring to be outside with bees as a job I love.
Anything your kids need to learn, you can find a video of on YT. Learn it and pass it on to your kids that way everyone gets better in the process. 🙂

We're homeschooling our kids, north coast BC (and when I say "we" I mean my wife is on it!). The program we're in is called Self Design and I believe my wife really enjoys a mix of Waldorf and un-schooling influences. She was previously a teacher in the regular school system and I've been surprised to learn how many teachers in the regular school system choose to homeschool their own kids. Even the good teachers are seeing that the system is failing children.

Fantastic conversation & I totally agree! I’m 71 & by high school, I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted in life. Life taught me much more. I’m a mother to 4 caring & smart kids that are now unschooling themselves. 2 of my kids have had overwhelming debt for the post secondary educations that they have. They are very good at their chosen careers but I question whether it was worth the many years of debt incurred. I recommend homeschooling to any parents. 🤗🇨🇦

Refreshing to hear you acknowledge your weakness with spelling. You obviously are a very intelligent person. I was in school before the age of spelling check and predictive texting. I can usually recognize when I spell something incorrectly but I don’t know what’s needed to fix it. Nearly all my school work, even maths, has a spelling grade element associated with the final grade… 45 years later I still feel stupid.

I’m a therapist for teens and I am convinced that the schools have become an abusive environment. I agree with you that homeschooling is good preparation. If kids can take the GED by age 16, then they can get a head start on peers whether that is college or trade school or other unschooling self taught skills. Give them a chance to avoid being bullied, groomed, and miseducated.

Newbie to your chanel after seeing your banana tree video ;) We’re one of those “great Christian folk” you referred to, lol. But our main reason for homeschooling the last 15yrs (beside the crazy stuff they’re teaching) was how low the academic bar was and like you said, no emphasis on actual skills nor entreprenurialism. Both my girls could read and write by the time they went to school at 5, and I saw them sorting buttons into colour and shapes! I was mortified. I offered to volunteer and asked when they teach basic things like letter formation as so many could’t even write their name. The answer was “we don’t have time”!!! That was it!

Pulled up YT for a video from one of my YTrs to watch/listen to while doing a chore while my homeschooler is in the other room doing some of her 4th grade independent work. I was also homeschooled (44 yrs old). You will get much advice along the way from other homeschoolers, and a lot of it will be helpful. The one thing I will say is that there are a LOT MORE options for curriculum and a mch greater access to resources now than there ever were back in the day for homeschooling. Take full advantage of this. What works for one family, or even one student, for math or LA (language arts), etc. may not work as well for another. That's fine. Keep looking until you find what works. And what works may change year to year, grade to grade, student to student. The beautiful thing is you're in charge, and you get to make those adjustments with your students along the way. It's a lot of work but it's also a lot of fun! There are also a ton of recourses for getting your homeschool graduate into college if that's their desired path. Don't let anyone tell you they'll never get accepted because the truth of the matter is that colleges and universities are lapping up homeschool kids because they're on the whole just better positioned to handle the load and do the work without having to be taught/retaught the basics like the public school kids. Watch YTrs, listen to podcasts, and there is a whole community of homeschoolers from every walk of life to share in this journey of knowledge. Love this channel, and I am excited to see you start this journey. Howdy from the Great State of Texas! 🧡

We are in Nova Scotia and our children (8,11) go to school in average about twice/week. School is just not priority here and it closed all the time (last week we had 2 inches of snow and they closed the schools. Then there are inservice days and a lot of holidays. During the shutdown the schools were down for 6 full months). So we are basically homeschooling the kids. By the way, it is completely illegal in Germany (you are forced to go to school!) and I think everybody should have the the option to homeschool. School is really more a daycare so that both parents can go to work and pay taxes so that the government can waste them and tell us how to live.

I agree with homeschooling for the most part. I did homeschool my two boys most of their childhood. (They went to public high school so they could participate in sports and dances.) However, I recently found out that some kids that were close in age to mine in a family that we were close to were taken out of school at a young age moved out to a homestead and homeschooled. Sounds fine right? Except that father decided his "right to raise his kids how he wanted" included molesting them. Repeatedly, for over 10 years. If that wasn't bad enough he also beat them mercilessly and convinced them they deserved it and nobody else wanted them so they could never leave. They were allowed minimal contact with anybody, never allowed to go anywhere unsupervised and were not educated at all. Now I don't know what the solution is. But I do know that if they had been allowed off the property and allowed to interact with other people including teachers somebody might have noticed this behavior and been able to rescue these girls before they were in their mid-20s.

Great information! We’ve been homeschooling in Alberta for 3 years now, we REALLY want to move back to my family farm near PA… but one of the things we don’t want to leave behind is the Alberta Homeschooling system. I haven’t even heard of that insurance before, but definitely looks great!
My wife and I are Christians, and next year we are going to use the Gather Round Program as we want to be able to do the same lessons with all the kids instead of needing to decide curriculum for each kid which can get overwhelming…
2 Programs we like a lot:
    - Math U-See (we also supplement with Khan Academy for math)
    - IEW writing (Institute for Excellence in Writing - incredible for teaching great writing skills - I think my young kids know more about proper grammar than most high school students do)
We’ve done a lot of supplementary survival based courses, and our kids often wake up and play a lot of board games before I’m out of bed…
Field trips are on the agenda - Dean - would you be open to hosting some homeschoolers for an afternoon tour, we just bought a 12 passenger van and I could bring small group from NE Alberta!

    • @PraxisPrepper
      @PraxisPrepper 3 месяца назад

I feel as though the illness thing was made terrible with the government handling of covid. It was so politicized by politicians that people got their desire to avoid being sick all caught up with their political identity. A lot of conservatives started acting like it was their duty in pushing back against government over-reach to boldly get sick and express their freedom to spread it around. And simultaneously the crazy liberals decided it was their civic duty to pretend as though as long as they got vaccinated for covid, they had to go around pretending that they were suddenly immune to everything by having done that one thing, so ended up spreading around their illnesses as much as the conservatives... not to be outdone???
It's crazy lately. As a homeschool family ourselves, it's always a priority to get my boy out with friends to socialize etc. But HOLY CRAP ain't nobody not out of commission sick lately. It's been so hard to get any social time in for him. That's definitely a bit of a challenge for us.
      Best luck! @@ArkopiaRUclips

I sometimes make my friends kids do math all in their head.
This can be calculating how much hay is in a round bale, and how much it weighs, to how many days it will feed an animal.
Or take a small pond built by bricks, calculate the size of the brick using just their thumb (check it with a ruler), then count the bricks and find the size of the pond, then how much water it holds.
They are exhausted after doing this, but instills the importance of math.

I homeschooled my kids and now they are homeschooling their own kids. Here's my answer to the part about not being able to send them off to school so that you have a break from them. There are two parts to that answer. They will very quickly "learn to learn" on their own without your help and in that way, you will have your break from them always needing your constant attenttion. . They will also learn to do the chores (farm, home, whatever) without your help. Your job as a homeschooling parent is not to spoon feed them all their education, but to make them independent learners! That's one side of it. The other side of it is that they will become people you enjoy having around. They will work with you and help you and be the best workers you have in whatever endeavor you choose to take on! Both sides of this will happen. Not everyone homeschools perfectly. This doesn't all happen for everyone. But these are attitudes and mindsets that you can take on. Learning from life is useful and important, but don't neglect some actual school books though. There are some things that it's just good to know to become a well-rounded, mature individual, whether you actually ever need that specific bit of knowledge or not!

75% of graduating high schoolers never read a book afterwards.
I believe schools teach them NOT to learn just repeat.
Many learning gurus say that the best way to learn is to teach it to someone else. So someone teaches you and then you teach it back to the teacher and then to someone else and so on. This way you're learning it three times but in different ways and it sticks ... you actually learn it.
The best teacher is one where the student exceeds the teacher so the teacher is doing a good job if the student goes beyond what they are teaching

I'm sure you'll find it VERY easy to keep up with public school curriculum with very little time per day.

I guess in other provinces, the Catholic schools are allowing this, but in Alberta no way

This is a must watch interview with John Taylor Gatto for anyone serious about this subject - and if someone wants to ‘debate’ me on why homeschooling is awful, I tell them their opinion doesn’t matter unless I know that they’re serious enough to sit through 5 hours of this interview to at least be partially informed. EVERYONE thinks they have an ‘informed’ mind regarding homeschoolers and their ‘lack of socialization’ until they see a family taking this seriously.

I’m with every commenter on that video. 😂 Important to note: there is no UN climate change warning on his video, but when I speak what I conclude to be closer to the truth about it all, I get warnings. 😂

Pretty sure the part about kitty litter isn’t true. Should do a bit more fact checking my man, last time was the heat pumps not working below 10 now this… Love your videos but that is pretty serious misinformation.

Heat pumps don’t work below -25C, and some people think they do. Others think they are kitty cats.

What do you mean its not true??? My neighbour is a retired principal! He said kids in his school demanded kitty litters! He said no because of issues with cleaning. Its out there! Dean is right!

@@ArkopiaRUclips Last time you said they don’t work below 10C. Also geothermal ones work below -25, there are multiple types of heat pumps.

    • @ArkopiaYouTube

They don’t work at all below -25, and my veteran HVAC and furnace guys say they don’t work efficiently at -10C. So, they don’t work, unless you want a heater that can’t be used for heating. Geothermal also does not work efficiently where I live. When I get around to my next major project, I’ll show you what works here.
