Another good band that Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse are in is Transatlantic which is another super prog band. I have always enjoyed their 25 minute song Duel with the Devil.
I only listened to "The Door" by Neal Morse, and it's an amazing song, and this one made me realise that I should really listen to more Neal Morse songs.
Check out Spock's Beard - The Light!!!!! Neal and his brother Alan both play guitar in the band and they're amazing! Really heavy prog, not quite Dream Theater but definitely edgy and modern.
If you check out "The Light," the live video off "The Beard is Out there" is, for me, the definitive version of that song. And it's SO early in the band's history (they were between their first and second albums, I believe, at the time). You get to see Neal switch up from singing, guitar, keyboards.
I’ve never heard this but when the song first started It really felt like I was listening to dream theater regardless it’s a great song. Especially the jam section like when the keyboards solo come in. The part when he said Go...cracked me up I wasn’t ready for the hilarious epic ness of that part. Would of loved to be at that show!
This song is among my favorites. Several Intros, several styles, soooo many transitions, beautiful lyrically. Eric's vocals are Soooo beautiful, and the talent OMG!
You mentioned jazz and Steven Wilson solo band which is prog and this song (Luminol) is very jazzy and includes a flute. ruclips.net/video/wYfQ1I-VV7M/видео.html His band started out prog/jazz and has gone kind of towards pop similar to Leprous going from prog/rock to pop/radio friendly sounding. Also Devin Townsend cd Addicted is his more pop/radio friendly album.
Love that you did Neal Morse! One of my favorites of his. I would definitely recommend checking out Stranger in your Soul by his other band Transatlantic!
eyy hyro homies!!! this is honestly my favourite Neal Morse song (and when i say that i mean specifically released under Neal Morse Band). such a fantastic song
@@Holestic_Honesty Eh, I think of reaction suggestions as a chance to share something I enjoy and maybe get more insight into. When and if it ever does get shared, it doesn't change my ability to go enjoy it to my hearts content.
Interesting you mention how "poppy" some of the sounds here are. Spock's Beard, Neal's band from the 90's/00's, featured some surprisingly poppy pieces of music ("June," a couple movements off of "Healing Colors of Sound," "All on a Sunday") for a prog-revival band. And then after Neal left, Spock's Beard's new direction had even more pop-inspired/mainstream/accessible sounds (I'm personally a fan of "Ghosts of Autumn," and "Surfing Down the Avalanche," though few seem to agree with me)
@@Tintop Basically every album since Nick left has had a single song I enjoy, and the rest has been either boring or borderline unlistenable. Oh well, they put out about 10 solid albums and that's a pretty good run.
@@Rendref I tend to like really novel sounds, and so I guess I have a soft spot for albums like _Octane_ where they fused prog with an almost grunge/90's alt-rock sound. I maybe give some of those tunes a bit of a pass because of how it tickles that "new sound" itch I have. So that's partially my bias.
I'm going to hold off watching this one because I've been planning on going through Neil Morse's solo discography for a while now. I love his stuff with Transatlantic and Spock's Beard though, so I'd be shocked if I didn't love his solo stuff.
For another deep dive into complex writing, unique timbre, and surprising genre shifting check out the band that time forgot: Gentle Giant. The songs Free Hand and On Reflection have concert versions free on RUclips. Great video here, I enjoyed your perspective!
It's incredibly saying for the music in question when it can glitch as it did and one isn't sure if that's an intentional cut or not. This piece of Neal Morse history has somehow flown under my radar and I'm incredibly grateful for the introduction - It's catalogued right in besides The Whirlwind (Especially the live version) and Seeds of Gold. You should add some Haken to your compendium of reactions - In a venn diagram of things you seem to have reacted to so far, they seem to fit solidly in the intersecting middle :P

Do you have time to react to The Prog World Orchestra's "Joy To The World", @Critical Reactions ? I know it's not the season for it but it maybe something you'd love. Awesome take from this song also and would love if you can also react to "The Door" by the same artist. :)
I love me a prog epic. I see you've done Octavarium from Dream Theater, but I'd love to see you do X-Japan's Art Of Life. It's one of prog's best hidden gems. :)
Mile Portnoy hs done more albums with Neal Morse than with DT. Either in the Neal Morse Band, or with him solo or with Transatlantic or Flying Colors. Seen the Neal Morse Band live a few times, got blewn away every time. Eric Gilette is a hell of a guitsr player and multi-instrumentalist. I remember them live switching into Highway Star by Deep Purple in the middle of a measure. Didn’t even bother to finish the measure and got back in - you guessed it - in the middle of the measure. Never seen or heard something like that live. You need to dig into Neal Morse, Spock’s Beard and Transatlantic. Transatlantic‘s „The Wirlwind“ is one song of 86 minutes. Just on the album the sections are listed as individual songs, so you could skip a part you don’t like. Crème de la crème of modern prog.
You again say you don't hear enough fun in metal so I shall again recommend Devin Townsend Project "The Mighty Masturbator". Theatrical prog metal that does not take itself too seriously at all (make sure to bring your "saving the world" boots)
Hello! Could you please review a hidden gem in progressive metal genre? I do really believe more people should enjoy it. "Vanden Plas - Vision 14teen * Blood of Eden"

Progressive gospel music. Luckily as english isn't my first language, I don't need to bother the lyrics. The NMB's music is well played and musicians very, very talented, but what ever Neil does, it has a very recognizable touch to it. Check out Transatlantic (Neil Morse, Mike Portnoy, Pete Trewavas from Marillion and Roine Stolt from The Flower Kings). They are even better than Neil Morse Band, because there's other strongly influential musicians, too. The live version of the Stranger In Your Soul Pt.1 is a great live performance!
Another good band that Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse are in is Transatlantic which is another super prog band. I have always enjoyed their 25 minute song Duel with the Devil.
Haahh for sure!! Ive just commented this
And Stranger - another one they sometimes do the "switcharoo" stuff
