    Happiness is already with you. When I catch myself blocking it, I focus my attention on my body, put on a Buddha smile, and take a long slow conscious breath, my body let go of tension I notice, and I am back to being … happy.

    Many years ago I saw a little sign on the wall inside Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. I never forgot it, and I wasn’t sure I really understood it, but I’ve always remembered it. It said, “You cannot travel upon the path until you have become the path itself. ~ The Buddha”

    I can add one to the comment posted 8 hours ago:
    “Happiness cannot be found from great effort and willpower but it is already there in relaxation and letting go." -Lama Gendun Rinpoche
    It looks like the Universe is certainly telling me something today 😊. I followed the advice, relaxing. The letting go happened just like that. My cat snuggled up to me and did exactly the same. It felt like she was telling me: see it's that easy, I do it all day long and I got to my 13 years of age in good health 🐱.

    It's such a strong tendency to want a formula, teaching or technique to bring something specific if we do it "right." I always wanted that reward from being a good student 😄 Such a common story to have followed paths and not feel like it did accomplish what the mind imagined it would. I enjoy how Rupert breaks down the idea of a path with a destination.

      Yeah, the belief of "If I'm a good boy or good girl then I'll be happy." and "If I do everything right then I'll be happy." The teaching is simply "Give your full attention to the now, to the present moment, be fully here and now."

    Listening and viewing this, a poem by the late John Welwood came to mind:
    Forget about enlightenment.
Sit down wherever you are
And listen to the wind singing in your veins.
Feel the love, the longing, the fear in your bones.
Open your heart to who you are, right now,
Not who you would like to be,
Not the saint you are striving to become,
But the being right here before you, inside you, around you.
All of you is holy.
You are already more and less
Than whatever you can know.
Breathe out,
Touch in,
Let go.
    By John Welwood
    In the same vain a poem from Antonio Machado
    Caminante, son tus huellas
    y nada más;
    Caminante, no hay camino,
    se hace camino al andar.
    Al andar se hace el camino,
    y al volver la vista atrás
    se ve la senda que nunca
    se ha de volver a pisar.
    Caminante no hay camino
    sino estelas en la mar.

    Voice/speech coaching = happiness.
    I think if the guy asking the question started getting lessons from a voice coach and an acting coach to help him with intonation and a softer sounding way of speaking, he would be so much happier in life because people would treat him entirely different.

      To your analogy, if an overweight friend was wearing really unflattering clothes you might suggest going shopping for something else. If you thought your friend’s choice of clothing might be off putting to others you’d say something if you were a good friend.
      The guy’s tone conveys an almost angry energy and I am guessing that people don’t react in a very positive way to it. But you are right that it’s mean to judge instead of being accepting. Does anyone else notice that when you stop looking for happiness outside of the now, you realize there is a blockage inside that you were not aware of… an emotion that you were not allowing yourself to feel? When I stop resisting the way I don’t want to feel… I notice that blockage being dislodged or transmuted and the feeling of joy coming up from my belly, all the way up my spine. Sometimes it feels good but also kinda uncomfortable when it comes up. And sometimes it feels like I can hold my breath for a long time when I stop resisting. It’s weird.

    I wonder how many people searching for happiness do not suffer from trauma. I guess they are very few. It seems like 99% of our suffering doesn't arise from not kowing our true nature alone, but from trauma stored within the body as well, which results in all the inner sufferings, conflicts, fears and racing mind that we experience. It seems more and more to me that these issues are deterimental for a spiritual awakening, and spiritual practice might not be effective for curing these issues at all, and some forms might even lead to overwhelm and retraumatization. Conversely, in the rare occasions where my traumata are not at the surface of the mind, my mind becomes joyful, peaceful and alert on its own. That's why I've chosen to work with psychological tools established to heal psychological trauma effectively and safely, and once I've got that settled, I'll be in the right state to discover my true nature. Don't get me wrong, I've drawn a lot of ressources from spiritual practice and videos like this. It's just, at this stage, giving the goal of spiritual awakening priority almost seems like trying to bypass the processing that's needed to become free and happy on a psychological level.

      There's a profound peace and contentment, for lack of better words, in that nothingness that is deeper than the emotion of happiness which comes and goes :) I would not describe it as a sort of dead void in any way, which can be easy to imagine it to be. happiness is what's left when there are no unhappy thoughts or emotions. but even when 'unhappy' thoughts or emotions appear - you/awareness are not made unhappy by them - you are just aware of them as they arise and pass away.

    • @brianlittrell797
      @brianlittrell797 2 года назад +1

      No, awareness is not JUST empty space and nothingness. Awareness itself is completely silent/still and is the background/"sky" through which all thoughts and feelings come and go. Thoughts, beliefs, opinions and feelings are the content that is passing through the awareness that is YOU. You are the awareness. You are NOT the thoughts and feelings passing through. Being aware of the awareness that you are - called practicing presence, causes one to slowly and gradually start to experience a small amount of peace and contentment at first, which then deepens and intensifies over time into the experience of joy, bliss, spiritual ecstasy. AT FIRST only a SMALL patch of blue sky is experienced and as more time passes the entire sky is experienced. The entire sky being tremendous peace, joy, bliss and love. OR it can all happen in an instant. That can also happen too.

    I like to think I get most of Rupert's ideeas and concepts. But some are still escaping me. This localization of awareness we call a human is just searching for happyness/peacefulness, but the question whos doing the searching? The mind while awareness is watching and knowing all this time it is the happyness all along? Or the awareness is sarching itself using the mind as tool without a clue? It is said the soul is using something called "veil of forgetfulness" before its coming here on Earth. So maybe this localization of awareness is not aware that itself its the very thing is searching for. What do you think?

      @@emendatus1 I really dont know. Is the dream only the product of the sleeping mind alone? Or is it a show orchestraded by Awareness and known by Awareness? The mind seems to be gone while asleep, but somehow, sometimes has a memory about the dreams, when the mind wakes up. Either way Awareness plays a very complicated game of ruse.
      Somehow mind is fooled thinking it alone can be aware of things/thoughts/sensation/perceptions, which is not the case, but the question from my original post still remains valid. Rupert calls a human a localization of Awareness. Is that localization aware that is part of a bigger structure or is somehow severed from it and the search continues?

    • @emendatus1
      @emendatus1 2 года назад

      @@kalkin2003 There is only you. İ am. Observe inside. You cant achieve the goal by asking questions and understanding. Only by perception. By observing you will gradually wake up. Dont ask questions. Just practice. Do what Rupert says. Also Jiddu Krishnamurti, Ekhart Tolle etc. The main way is observing your feelings, emotions and thoughts. Because now you are a bundle of feelings, emotions and thoughts. You have identified yourself with them. But you are not that bundle. You just identified yourself. That is why you can observe them. When you observe them you are no longer that bundle. You are your real self. But this process is difficult and takes a long time because we all have been sleeping for a very long time and accumulated certain things that hinder our true seeing. Just like dust on the mirror. Because of dust you cant see yourself clearly. Also imagine a lake wich is very dirty and strong wind is blowing and there are huge waves. Because of dirt and waves you cant see yourself clearly on the lake of the mind. That is why traditionally people first engaged in long sadhana for purafication and after 30, 40 years of sadhana they tried to do what Rupert says. So İ think Rupert talks to those people who have engaged in self purafication for several lives or at least for several decades in this life. They are ready to do what he says. Others just listen and cant do anything.

    • @emendatus1
      @emendatus1 2 года назад

      @@kalkin2003 Also observation must be of special kind. Jiddu Krishnamurti talked extensively about this. For instance, there is some feeling that troubles you. You suffer. You wish this feeling stop. 2 processes takes place simultaneously. 1. You suffer. 2. You dont want to suffer. This is resistance. Start to observe. When observing just observe these 2 processes as if they are not yours. As if you see them in some other man. Observe your suffering without wishing it to stop. Dont identify yourself with suffering. And with resistance. İf done correctly suffering will stop. So, this practice has immense practical importance. You will be able to stop any feeling, emotion and thought that you dont want. İnside there will be only things that you want. You will be a true operator or driver of this machine. Fully awake, conscious and without fear. A true human being.

    If happiness is not a feeling then what is it when you win the Powerball jackpot of several hundred million dollars is that just a window through the clouds also?

    • @brianlittrell797

      I believe in Rupert's system of understanding happiness is experienced by most persons as a feeling/emotion. But he is saying that happiness is your inherent/innate nature that is always shining like the sun, or ever present like the blue sky. But the rays of the sun can't be properly felt through thick cloud cover obscuring the sky. Neither can the blue sky be experienced. Identification with thoughts or experiences that are out of alignment with our true nature causes the sky and sun to be obscured and not experienced. When you win a very large amount of money and feel happy/joyful you are in that moment choosing to experience some of that blue sky/sun. You have removed some of the clouds that were obscuring the sky.
      This is because of what pure awareness, which is YOU, has chosen to make the money MEAN to you. You gave it a certain meaning. But of course this temporary happiness doesn't last because the ego will soon after several weeks or months go back to it's default state. And so the clouds return to obscure the sky as the ego makes one focus on the past or the future OR in analysis and THINKING ABOUT the present moment. As opposed to BEING in the present moment. It's like thinking about the breath, instead of focusing on the actual experience of the breath without thinking about it and without any agenda or intention.

      Winning the lottery brings and end of the desire to win and your true nature happiness shines by itself as you are no longer desiring.
      But people mistake the happiness is caused by the object attained. Hence if winning the lottery was the cause of your happiness then you should be happy always when you have money. Obviously that's not the case.

      ;-)....this sort of what is called "happyness" is the result of achieving something, that you believe, will bring you happyness. And once you achieved it, it will bring you happyness, because you achieved it, not because of "what" you achieved. The ego feels happy by achieving. The "happyness" that Rupert refers to is not the reaching of an achievment. it is the essence of Self realisation. Self realisation cannot be achieved by you believing to be a human being in its limited sence of "i". So thats why he is saying stop searching, you are already what you are looking for. In his example he points out, that you believe to live a life in clouds, searching for the blue sky, which will bring you happyness not remembering being the blue sky, that brought the clouds into an experience in order to finally realise its Self, as the blue sky or the ocean out of which every thing immaginary can become seemingly real but only because all is an illusion.

    This answer, and I would argue the “Direct Path” in general, is misleading. It’s not that what Rupert is saying is not true. It’s that it is a mind responding to a mind. Such philosophizing does not lead to the Realization of that which is prior to mind. At best it might give one a brief insight but there is still much sadhana and self-inquiry to do before any such glimpse of Reality becomes one’s abiding State.

      I would agree with you. We all have devastating times. When I lost everything, I was crushed, depressed, unhappy. Soon after, I transcended my mind and connected to a higher dimension and found happiness, unconditional love and peace. It lasted 4 years before I became more balanced. It seems to occur without warning and when our ego has been decimated. The key is to recharge our ego while balancing it with our divine identity

    " Happiness is unbelievable.It seems that man cannot be happy. If you talk about your depression, sadness, misery, everybody believes it. It seems natural. If you talk about your happiness nobody believes you - it seems unnatural. Sigmund Freud, after forty years of research into the human mind, working with thousands of people, observing thousands of disturbed minds, came to the conclusion that happiness is a fiction: man cannot be happy. At the most, we can make things a little more comfortable, that’s all. At the most we can make unhappiness a little less, that’s all. But happy man cannot be. Looks very pessimistic - but looking at the modern man it seems to be exactly the case, it seems to be a fact.
    Buddha says that man can be happy, tremendously happy. Krishna sings songs of that ultimate bliss - satchitanand. Jesus talks about the Kingdom of God. But how can you believe so few people, who can be counted on the fingers, against the whole mass, millions and millions of people down the centuries, remaining unhappy, growing more and more into unhappiness, their whole life a story of misery and nothing else? And then comes death! How to believe these few people? Either they are lying or they are deceived themselves. Either they are Lying for some other purpose, or they are a little mad, deceived by their own illusions. They are living in a wish-fulfillment. They wanted to be happy and they started believing that they were happy. It seems more like a belief, a desperate belief, rather than a fact. But how did it come to happen that very few people ever become happy? If you forget man, if you don’t pay much attention to man, then Buddha, Krishna, Christ, they will look more true. If you look at the trees, if you look at the birds, if you look at the stars, then everything is shimmering in tremendous happiness. Then bliss seems to be the very stuff the existence is made of. Only man is unhappy. Something deep down has gone wrong.
    Buddha is not deceived and he is not Lying. And I say this to you, not on the authority of the tradition - I say this to you on my own authority. Man can be happy, more happy than the birds, more happy than the trees, more happy than the stars - because man has something which no tree, no bird, no star, has. Man has consciousness! But when you have consciousness then two alternatives are possible: either you can become unhappy or you can become happy. Then it is your own choice! Trees are simply happy because they cannot be unhappy. Their happiness is not their freedom - they have to be happy. They don’t know how to be unhappy; there is no alternative. These birds chirping in the trees, they are happy! not because they have chosen to be happy - they are simply happy because they don’t know any other way to be. Their happiness is unconscious. It is simply natural."

    Happiness is the opposite for sadness. The truth there is no happiness or sadness. It is all in the mind connected with ideas within us built from the known that is through society or family or by the world that is taken as happiness. Therefore, happiness exist in comparison made within your thoughts of the experience you feel or with a set idea that this or that is happiness. Sometimes is compared with the past or the future however and then connected with present. The idea of happiness should occur without any of these. Again how are we to measure happiness??????. You can't . You can only let go the idea of happiness to set your thoughts free even to its meaning which is purely an idea made up by the world . Therefore we have moulded stereotypical occurrences of happiness in regards to its existence which is itself superficial
