I restring my crosses when trying out different hybrids if I like the mains
I do it all the time!!! With kevlar mains its great. Never had any issues with the frame. Even at 86 lbs. not sure why the dude is saying there is no tension in the mains.

I'd have got her to sign something to confirm what she wants.
I can even tie the broken string with a piece of new string and feed thru the hole across it (if the hole is occupied by another main/cross: making it bigger so two can go thru then tie it to the loop outside the frame,
When I worked for a shop we told them. Yes, we can do just the crosses and we would tell them 2x the price of a full new string job. That shut them up. @6.37 the racket looks cracked!
My head hurts after watching this. I own a prototype machine shop, and having to explain what can and cannot be done to things in SO MANY industries gets really tiring. Explaining post-weld heat treatment, back purging and HAZ as well as composites machining, etc. etc. to even PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS... AHHH :( I'm going to go cry in a corner now. I feel you man, Sorry, I think I smell burning toast... ;)
My local shop does shave down grip sizes, but can only do 1 grip size as they are worried about going too deep and going past the point of no return
The frame of my raquet broke exactly where you are showing, the first time I used it after a service. In Mexico they fixed it perfectly, I can barely see the mark and I have used it 3 or 4 times a week for 2 years now without issues
That kind of break is commonly caused by a bad string job. I was taught that this 2'o clock position is the weak spot in the hoop, and if you don't follow good stringing practice (running in mains evenly 2-3 at a time on both sides, using too high a tension, etc.) then this is where it would break. They might have "fixed" that spot cosmetically but there is not way they fixed it structurally. So when the racquet get restrung again, it's very likely to implode at that point.

9:48 Actually Volkl's have interchangeable pallets (at least the older ones did) so you could change the grip size.

I’ve strung crosses only before. If I get to the court and the tension is slightly off, I’ll go back the same day and increase/decrease ~1 pound. I’m super careful and I would never do that on anyone’s racket except my own.
Back in the 70's I used to drive over from SF to play tennis in Marin. It was like playing in another country. By the way, you're just way too patient with some people.
yeah, it's a really fine line as to how much time to spend with a customer, I feel for him, I've been there hundreds of times over the years with different customers, so many variables to consider, and now with Yelp, Google Reviews, etc. you have to be careful, as even if you conduct yourself in a professional and respectful manner you can still get a horrid review from a customer, it has happened to me.

I seem to recall some guy back in New York that does all the weight, and shaving specs on pro player racquets to ensure each racquet was exactly the same who was with a reporter who related he will do grip shaving, and this kind of thing but it costs like $500 bucks for him to do that kind of work. So given the cost involved, it's obviously cheaper to get a new racquet.
+1000 agreed with the head guard replacement part, if it is 99.9% fit, then it is 100% not fit

It is possible to downsize a racquet grip on a milling machine using a carbide flycutter. It takes about an hour to do it right.
Possible but not feasible? Why would he spend time finding a milling machine to do that? Then pay them to do that service. In business to make money not waste money and time.
I replaced just the crosses when I had expensive gut in the mains - played great 😅
And racket is till alive today!
I've done that to save gut many times.
I did that for a kid also. Took an educated guess on the tension for the crosses after playing the gut mains (like a harp) and then tensioning a segment of gut and playing it.
How the hell did you do that without cutting through the mains? 🤔
@@Reakerboy By pulling out the crosses. One is already broke so pull that out starting there. I got rusty at weaving with Covid (live with a high risk EMT so I was high risk) so I string a racquet I do not use just to weave. Cut the crosses out and weave again. Weave each cross 10 times, pulling out and weaving over and over.
@@Reakerboy just cut through the crosses, parallel to the mains - and was careful not to damage the mains.
As a kid saw old experienced stringers repairing broken graphite racquets,by putting a molten metal inside the crack....repair was good,but made the rackey heavy....

Of course He cant shave the grip size off for you because He is not a pro custom guy. He only owns a shop does the restring. He is not Priority One. Or Roman Prokes who does the customisation for the top atp pros.
I have a small shop and I shave handles for people at least once a month. It's not that hard. Most customers feel they actually come out better than factory since the corners are more pronounced when I finish. It doesn't even take that long - maybe 10-15 minutes.
My local shop told me that requesting a 2 piece string job was a ridiculous request because I wasn't getting a hybrid (yonex ezone 98 2020)...... I even offered to pay the express price for regular turnaround and they still strung it one piece...
If they know how to do it correctly, one piece stringing has far better tension maintenance. In general, two-piece stringing is easier; so they probably thought they were offering good advice. Might have helped if they explained why though.

what racket do you use?
You can fix a grip that's to small. But, a grip that's to large is a huge or impossible task. But, the handle has a overgrip and a thick original grip, you may get away with stripping it down to the handle. Then, just putting on a overgrip on the handle. There was a engineer master craftsman at our park which reduced grip sizes. He took long painstaking time to do the job.
I've also seen a couple guys totally butcher a racquet handle in the name of reducing the grip size. 😱
I saw Wilson website there’s a pro staff demo racket, does that mean they’re going to update the prostaff?
They probably will update it in the future but the demos are usually are so you can try the racquet then you return the racquet after a week or so im not sure but simply its, you try then return and if you like it then buy it.

I have 2 classic pro staffs and ran into this same issue. After coming back to the game and after 20 years and realizing how much it has changed, it was better to hang them up than try to play with them.

How much do you charge at your shop to string racquets
When I was growing up, I would break a string and the shop was able to just repair that string. Admittedly that was many decades ago, but why is that no longer possible?
Sounds like the wooden era where stringers would help their clients lower costs by patching up broken natural gut strings. Not so much of a problem because strings used to cost so much and the power was so low in wooden frames that bad tension wasn't too much of a concern for rec players. In the age of $10 poly strings, (much much cheaper) the drawbacks don't make as much sense now. Strings are cheap, takes about the same amount of effort to repair a broken string as to restring the whole thing. Tension is now a bigger problem because graphite racquet power is so high.
@@strayfirex lots of people hybrid poly with gut. Gut is definitely not cheap these days.
I used to do that with my good ol' wooden Dunlop Maxply when I was a kid about 40 years ago. Back then, you could auger the holes around the broken string to enlarge them and allow 2 strings to pass through. That allowed me to tie off a knot on either side of the broken string and fix just that string without restring all the crosses. Actually I had to replace a total of 3 strings; the broken one and the strings on either side of the broken one. I didn't use a stringing machine, just a crescent device that I had made to allow some leverage when I pulled the strings. Of course, the racquet never played the same. The tensions on the string bed were uneven. Balls were harder to control. But, my family was not well off and we couldn't afford a new string job. But, yes it is possible, but definitely not recommended.
Saw old stringers doing that in 80s.....at the cost of tension.....experience stringers were against this practice ,as they feared breaking of racquet...wooden racquets were placed in special frames and nuts tightened,so that they dont lose shape ,back then...

Normally l1 L2 L3 L4 are grips sizes but head became weird and started putting L3,L4 etc as swing style .I think it is the length of the racket witch also increases the swing time.Like L4is longer and need more swing time than L3. I think they also have S letter to rate swing style via speed ,like S1,S2 etc.

@@arakkalvaishnavraghu2396 They used S1, S2, S3, S4, L1, L2, L3, L4..... S=short, L=Long. L is for people with long strokes, S is for players with shorter strokes. So S4 would be the most powerful racquets, and L4 would be the most control.

This is why you always listen to the professionals. If you disagree with one, get a second opinion. If both professionals agree, then you're probably wrong and should listen to the people that know what they're doing.

You can restring the crosses only without deforming the frame. The racquet will play like crap though
I do mine too except I tie off my crosses to crosses. That way I can also replace my mains if I don't like it😂.

Charge half price of full restring to do crosses only if mains still in good condition like less than month old if used sparingly like once a week or something
Why put a racquet on a machine to remove crosses? remove crosses, then put racquet on the machine to replace. I do it a lot! with fresh 'main' strings never had an issue. Hairdryer or 'heat gun' on low for grommet or bump guard replacement.
Cutting the crosses when not mounted is going to cause the mains to lose tension. Then you repull crosses and get some of that tension back, maybe, but it's easier on the frame (assuming you have a 6-point machine) not to stress it like that. You will never get back to the "reference" tension either way. It's purely a hack, appropriate for kids (or first timers) who are just swatting a balls for fun. The question is what are you doing that your crosses are breaking while your mains are still "fresh". Are you running gut in the crosses and a geometric "sharp" POLY in the mains??
@@gdeangelkick I am rotating up to 12 different racquets with 'hybrid' set-ups when trying different poly's on crosses, I often get huge tension loss after the first hit, so I ramp up tension on replacement crosses and it has worked well. I have now got my string choices and tension sorted.

The problem with a problem customer is that they go to their kid's matches and watch with the parents of the other kids and none of them know anything about tennis. And the problem customer says such and such shop is incompetent to the other parents. They can not explain their stupidity and will just slander your shop. A happy customer does not tell as many people as the unhappy customer. So just cut the strings out and take a loss on the half set of string and do not even tell them.

It’s like repairing a cheap headphone when one side stopped working.It is unwanted cost and probably useless as by the time the fuzz is gone the pressure might be gone too.
I'd reccomend gorilla glue and some felt from your local arts and crafts store.

People who say "just string the crosses" are just like those people who were responsible of sinking the Titanic.
It used to be common to just restring crosses when doing a wooden racquet. The frame wasn't flexing as much during stringing. But you can still re-string a single cross (and tie off the broken strings) for a parent whose kid is playing the same whether they had a piece of plywood on the end of a board vs a tennis racquet.

Dear Harry, if I may give one advise, can you please go back and focus on the real players requests. How to improve this or that, which racket an why ? Which style of playing fits which person... Worst of the cases you can go back to your scale, pick up a clash or a drive and swingweight it. And most important of all, don't feel obliged to post everyday. You are loosing your audience.
