Your musical test piece should be entitled 'drooling in the key of A'. Seriously though, that Music Man a very 'bling-y' looker of a bass, with the tone to match. That 18v preamp is really stout. I can see why it is your favorite. In the words of Monty Python, "and now for something completely different" I'd love to hear that Jerry Scheff Lakland I see on the wall during your intro. Great, fun video Mr. Lobster - as usual!
Nice long awaited review Lobster. I recently picked up this bass in Tectonic Blue Sparkle with an ebony fret board after having some issues with the Olive colored Sterling HH Indonesian version. I was trying to get by on the cheap with an HH in my bass arsenal but it wasn't working for me. This is by far my favorite bass and I think it is well worth the extra price. My favorite position is still the Stingray parallel position and though I have another Special in the classic 4H configuration there is something about the way the ebony fret board sounds on my 4HH that gives it an edge even over my 4H. The knobs on both my Specials have a quality weighty feel to them and the tuners are the best I've ever used not to mention the superb flawless fret work.
Awesome! Congrats Glenn! The Sterlings for the price are solid, but they do not compare to the higher end ones or the US counterparts while stock. I haven't tried one with the ebony board yet, but I want to! Enjoy it :)

My first bass was a sub series sting ray. I’ve since played quite a few sting rays and I gotta say, the sting ray is the most naturally playing bass for me. Perfect string spacing and neck.
Any chance you happened upon a Darkhorse? I came across one but passed up the moment. I did however play a Stingray Special 4H Jackpot (black sparkle with gold hardware). It was the most magical moment I had experienced with an instrument since 1992, the year I came upon my first Stingray. Needless to say, I visited my local store Huber & Breeze (plug) for a set of Super Slinky's and ended up leaving the store with two sets of Super Slinky's. One set in the package, the other set on that bass. :). The prices are up a couple hundred since you posted this video but these basses are worth every penny.

Very informative Music Man Stingray Special 4HH BFR video. Do you find it just as easy to play slap bass with the dual Humbucker Pickups versus the singe Humbucker pickup? Thanks again for another great Bass Guitar Video.
Thank you Derek! Great question. I don't find much issue slapping this. I find much more issue when the neck and neck pickup have no space between them. However, this bass has enough space for me to comfortably slap. YMMV
Hi Lobster. A point to check on this bass. Watching on screen, my TV actually it looks to me that the neck might need relaxing and re-setting. There appears to be more fretboard exposed between the E and the edge of the board? More so than on the treble side. Also the strings are sitting right of centre of the neck pickup poles. I think relax and shift the neck over a smidge might sort both issues?
That's a very, very nice bass that looks and sounds expensive! I really like the tonal versatility and can hear a Sabre, a StingRay, a P-Bass, and an Alembic (both outer coils).

Hey Goose! Go for it, you'll enjoy the new tones available to you. The 5 way selector gives you a ton of flexibility to make a Stingray Special HH fit in almost anywhere.
@@LowEndLobster Wellllll, there's the rub: I'd be selling my Am Pro II Jazz Bass to get the Stingray. :-D Basically, the Stingray would be my one and only. I guess I'm looking for a bass that can be the centerpiece of my one-man band. I like to write songs on the bass, and then complement with guitar and synth.
I have this same bass, Love It. But it would be nice to get that Single coil mode like the Sabre you mentioned. Could I send it to you to install a coil tap? 😎
Hehe thanks Rick! I don't think the Sabre mode would work because Sabres employ a phantom coil. If I did that with the SR 4HH setup, you'd get some hum in that position.
I don´t like the "luxury" look and golden hardware, but this thing sounds really good and seems also very versatile with the double humbucker configuration. I´ll check other models (just to suffer, i don´t have a penny)
The inner coils sound (position 2) is so goddamn funky. It has kind of the vibe of both a 4001/3 and a jazz bass but not quite as scooped, almost like it's a J-bass neck pickup with a Rick bridge pickup.
I've got two Music Man StingRays and I considered getting a Special 4HH, but after watching this video I found out that I like the bridge pickup only 😄So I remain 4H StingRay user 🙂
Not particularly a fan of the neck humbucker by itself. A single coil option for position 1 would be more useful to me, but I like the sounds in positions 2-4 that are possible by having that HH configuration.
Looking into getting one of these but none of the stores that carry MM have some on hand, so i would have to special order one, im conflicted between the H and HH. That said, there was a 5 stringer in a used music store that i went and checked out today (im looking for a 4). A few things i noticed was 1) the pickup spacing for slap is problematic on the HH for me, but im not a huge slapper. 2) The G string was slipping off the fingerboard because it was so close to the edge and the fret slope being around the same area that is left. Have you noticed this happening on either of your specials on a 4 string version? or is the fretboard a bit more generous with more room without the extra string crowding things. Personally i thought the Pre-amp was surprisingly tame for a 18v preamp. On my warwick i can go to the extremes where there is so much treble its obnoxious, and i dial it back from there, but its there if i need it. I wonder if this is by design though because i definately couldn't get a bad sound out of the bass. I was also hoping the 5-way switch would be more dramatic of a tonal difference but i was mainly interested i the classic stingray tone of just bridge, then potentially the jazz style coil tapping (i mostly play jazzes now), overall there was a change but the position for bridge and that JBass tapping sounded pretty similar to me (which sounded great!) so im leaning towards the classic single pickup one! Anyways, thanks for all your videos, not only are you thorough and objective, but I just love your personality and enthusiasm you bring to these videos!
Another You Tube guy did a review comparing a Stingray H to the HH. His verdict was the HH could not do the single H pickup sound and that you could not slap on the HH because the neck pickup was in the way. I don't agree with him owning both the H and HH as I get the tone and no interference slapping, but he proclaims himself a wizard and really disses the HH in his video. Please do a video comparing the H and HH. Thanks.
Thanks David! You bring up an excellent point. So I know of the video you're talking about and that statement is somewhat right but only in a very specific circumstance. When looking at the USA Stingray H and HH (NOT the Stingray Special H and HH mind you), from what I understand the HH had the humbuckers wired in series when the full humbucker was engaged (positions 1, 3 and 5), where the regular Stingray 4 H is wired in the traditional parallel config. For this circumstance, the dude is absolutely correct. I have not played or looked at a Sterling Ray34HH but I know the Ray34H is wired in parallel. Now in a more modern context with the Stingray Special basses, these are wired in parallel for both the H and HH. I did a comparison video with mine which you can see here- ruclips.net/video/Y6PNVtqQ4Mg/видео.html
Not really, as long as you don't mind the neck pickup location. For me, it gives me plenty of room for slapping and doesn't get in the way but YMMV depending on how you play. I did another video comparing this bass to my white H 4 string special - bridge pickup only, and they sound IMO identical. Here you go :) - ruclips.net/video/Y6PNVtqQ4Mg/видео.html
@@LowEndLobster Thanks for the reply! I used to play/gig with a 90s L2000 (had to sell it during college sadly) so I think the neck pup should be fine for me, but I’m also much much more experienced on upright vs electric so I’m honestly still not the greatest electric slap player, haha. But I did like the Sheehan kind of woof the neck pickup gave so I’ll probably go HH. Thanks!

Thanks George! Congrats! I have reviewed the stock Ray34 in Ash and though it was a wonderful bass for the price. Yours will fall right in that category :).
I just bought a SBMM Ray 4HH and I am wanting to string it BEAD. Will I need to modify the nut to string it this way with .60-.130 BEAD strings? Any other things I will need to know? Thanks
Heyo! Congrats! I have a Ray4HH coming as well :). You may need to modify the nut a little. If it's not glued in too hard, you can try your hand at cutting a second nut so you can always return to stock if needed.
@@LowEndLobster Even though the original Sabre did variable pickup selection(as Ernie Ball has been doing for tons of years) they can nick a series/ parallel switch from G and L as well. Hey G and L finally nicked the 3 band eq in the M2000 bass!

I did a comparison video with mine which you can see here- ruclips.net/video/Y6PNVtqQ4Mg/видео.html
Hey Lobster~ do you like the 3 band preamp that Music Man uses? Or would you ever replace it with something like a DarkGlass pre~
Any downsides for going HH over the H? Thinking about a stingray special as my main bass but there are so many good options, haha
Thanks!
Matador look good hanging next to that, you know. It's a double p config....and burgundy mist.... :-)
4:45 So lobster, is it special? How special is it?
Sounds as good as I thought it would. Thanks for showing it!
I mean, what's there to say? Some might not like it, but this is what Peak Ray Performance looks like.
Thanks man! This and my SR classic are my FAVES
Hello My Brother from another Mother, Another Great Vid! I just picked this up, can you do a Review on it? Sterling Ray34 Burl Top Rosewood fingerboard Black Satin @LowEndLobster
Thanks George! Congrats! I have reviewed the stock Ray34 in Ash and though it was a wonderful bass for the price. Yours will fall right in that category :).
Real beauty i am in love
Thanks Ram!
So beautiful 😍😍😍
Thank you João
Lobster. If you had to choose between a stingray special H or HH which would you choose?
I have both. I play the 4H more heh.
Imagine if only Position 2 gave an SH tone for Lakland 4402 vibes 😉
😲🤯💥
:)
@@LowEndLobster thank you! Love your channel.
Hey, does the neck PU get in the way when slapping?
Honestly, not on this bass. However basses where the fingerboard is right against the neck pickup give me trouble
what is the material of fingerboard??
How do I win this one? 😀
Send your entry along with a fat check ;P
@@LowEndLobsterWill a blank check work for you ? I'm talking totally blank. 😂

How much does it weigh?
X- rated video!!! View with caution, parental Guidance advised 🤤😅👊

@@LowEndLobster 🤣
Beginning of the video: Dunno... looks kinda ugly....
End of the video: *drool* I want one right now!
Hehe thanks Timo!
The Stingray is the bass standard. Lobster being so tickled pink has proved it.
Thanks JC! I loooove my Rays. Pinky and my SR classic are absolute desert-island basses.
@@LowEndLobster I would love to see Music Man do a three band eq bass, the 5 screw neck joint and the classic mute bridge. A combo of new and old!
@@JC19676 YES! Call it like the neo classic or something. Brilliant!
@@LowEndLobster Even though the original Sabre did variable pickup selection(as Ernie Ball has been doing for tons of years) they can nick a series/ parallel switch from G and L as well. Hey G and L finally nicked the 3 band eq in the M2000 bass!
Well, I would have given it 6 claws...how dare you
;P

The new BFR "slugger" is absolute puke compared to this bass. If they had a 4HH with gold hardware and was bass boat blue sparkle with maple fretboard, I'd probably pay the 3300 they're asking for the "slugger" abomination
Yeah I feel you, I haven't really dug the newer finish lines and most of the newer BFR stuff. I do love my Pinky though!
@@LowEndLobster I'm first in line for the new pacific blue sweetwater exclusive color, blue is kinda my thing if you can't tell by my profile pic 🤣
Killer sound! The color....pass on!
Thanks Ralph! It's not for everyone. I forgot to mention that they come with matching pink sparkly spandex leggings ;P
@@LowEndLobster 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Hmmmm so you seem a bit infatuated with this.....
Just a wee bit ;)
