Generally in a lifeguard mission you arrive on station and wait for the air raid to start, then pick up anyone shot down.

OMG the "pucker factor" of sneaking into that harbor with NO safe depth was hard to beat. I think weather DEFINATELY helped you in this case. Good Job!!!!!!!!!!!
Another good episode. One of my favorite and most intense missions was a lifeguard mission, had to deal with 4 destroyers before I could rescue the airmen. I imagine they had quite the show bobbing around in the water.

From when I used to play many years ago I'm almost certain it's a dual Oerlikon mount on the bow with a single 4 Inch mount on the stern. As far as I'm aware the only United States ships that had a side by side 4 Inch/50 mount armament like that were USS Hovey and Long. It'd be great if they let fleet boats have it but I don't think so. Poor choice of words on the developers part.

Lol! Generally, when assigned to lifeguard, you’re supposed to remain off the coast, submerged and not to be detected. Not attack the targets of the aircraft you’re supporting. There was no downed airman. You are supposed to watch the strike and wait for any aircraft in distress. That’s when you pick up the airman or men that get shot down. Also, remain out of range of coastal artillery. You should look for the episode of “Hell below” about that very type of mission. There’s a very famous man from history that got rescued by a sub on lifeguard duty, after his Avenger bomber got shot down. 😆
I had been reading the subsim forums and the mission is to pickup a downed airman. The guy is at the mission point with a pink flare and you have to reach that location before the timer expires! Known buggy mission where the airman often drifts away or sinks

Trick to never getting depth-charged is to get at maximum range for fast speed (6,500 yards if using Mark 14s IIRC), select your target, fire, and GTFO. The ships usually don't pick up the torpedoes until the last second, and the escorts always assume your boat is way closer than it actually is and never detect you. I've sunk more tonnage like that than I can count, especially on the first SH game, Silent Hunter: Commander's Edition. Even caught the Yamato herself off Guadalcanal like that and blew her out of the water!
30:05 - Dude, you attack TRUK and you don't take a looky-loo around first to see what all's there before attacking?! Truk is their Pearl Harbor in the South Pacific...of COURSE there's going to be major targets there! Whenever you attack a port, ALWAYS look before you launch!

How can you tell that there is deck gun damage in a WWII era submarine when submerged?

I'd headcanon it as them being caught with their pants down, with their ships sitting idle, with boilers cold, and crews out on the base doing whatever, because they didn't expect an American submarine to just waltz into their harbor, in the middle of a storm, past the roving bands of destroyers, patrolling aircraft, and antisubmarine defenses, almost 1,000 miles into enemy territory. They had to raise steam to get moving, hence them just sitting there and firing everything at the sub while they went.
