In those times a girl this determined to study must have a very strong sense of self worth and would not later on simply obeys the father and brother to marry someone she doesn’t love. Unless some financial impending tragedy would befall her household and she must sacrifice herself. And Mr Leung didn’t love Yang Toy as a female yet, and therefore not likely to die from grief. He probably already had some serious health issues.
