    If using an 18650 lithium cell then make sure it's either protected or use a compatible charger with the output capped to 4.2V.

    I like the multiple leds to get the light output high enough, many leds at lower current is more reliable.

    Wow, I bought something that looked absolutely identical to this from DAISO in Korea about three years ago. The only difference was that it just had that same 3xAAA holder inside rather than any kind of recharging circuit, but it did even have the little dot on the top where the lead goes in on yours. I used it as the light for a cosplay prop and it did the job extremely well.

    NiMH typical output is 1.2V per cell (x3 = 3.6V). NiMH charge voltage is 1.4~1.6V per cell (x3 = 4.2~4.8V). These times-three values are pretty spot on with Li-Ion cell voltages.

    I would love to see more projects and reviews of light with light sensors and movement sensors.
    They give so much possibilities to every project and dont really need much components.
    Right now Im working on small 5v lap that will automatically turn on when its dark and I even managed to make it light up smooth from off to on depending on amount of light in room

    The way the charging input jack is wired to the battery holder makes it possible to power this from USB directly, which is nice. The difference in voltage is potentially increasing the power of the device, to 20mA per LED at the last setting, perhaps....

    caught your videos some time ago by accident really like them so subscribed.Now i'm addicted.You were asking about ads.When I watch on tv the first video runs an ad which you can click off sometimes usually a bank or hardware store or somebody selling a car or a monster machine that can rip 8" of dirt in a pass and blah blah blah and then they go away as the videos auto play.On the computer the same thing except for the bar ad at the bottom of the screen where you click the x to get rid of it. Mostly ads for getting rid of your criminal record.I'm in B.C. Canada.Hope this helps.

    I've got one of these, but I've never trusted it to charge an 18650 cell so I always remove the battery before plugging in the cord. If you plug the cord into a power bank or a usb power supply you can run the light without a cell inside. I had mine mounted over my small workbench and plugged into a usb power supply so I could run it for long periods of time when I needed a little extra light.

    i just wish they started selling stuff with warm led's.. everything i buy (normally good branded stuff anyhow) and all blueish or white on them it drives me crazy i miss the warm light feel. like these lantern things i once bought although not really a top brand but there not rechargable types so not like matters to much. but kinda style of an old hurricane lantern see from 1800~1900's but..they use blueish white led's and im like... thats not really a good color for something like this... i would loved a warm/orange flameish color more to imitate what they are they dont need to flicker like a flame but been nice. must do it for cheapness dont they?

    Nice to see something built better than the typical junk, the housing I mean, though it is unnecessarily large considering it doesn't effectively use the casing for heatsinking. The diameter is excessive and who really needs a diffuser dome for camping? I'd want the protection, from insects if nothing else since it doesn't appear to be waterproof, but not the lumen loss.
    Given how precious battery power can be while camping, I'd also have preferred more efficient Cree LEDs, and the circuit board looks marginal for 1A drive, probably running the LED dies fairly hot with addt'l lumen loss when it could've been built on an (aluminum) mPCB instead.
    I suppose since it's CHEAP enough, you could just take along another battery but on the other hand if built well and as efficient as possible, might be something you would get use out of for the rest of your life which IMO is worth a few dollars more. You don't need a closet full of redundant LED lights, just a few nice ones that you like to use.

  • @exi
    @exi 7 лет назад +5

    I've got several of those and always thought about opening one to see wether they have any protection circuitry. Obviously not. However the little chip could have a low voltage cutoff, did you test for that? The protected 18650 i got fit only very barely into the casing. If i ever get hold of that idiot who decided it is okay to make an 18650 cell longer than 65mm i wont do nice things to him, thats for sure.

I don't like it - it's full of coordinated bauble and tinsel collections. we always used to just accumulate a gaudy mash up of decorations and save them from year to year in the loft. I guess the modern way is to be more coordinated and just lash them into the landfill so that you're on trend again next year.

    • @TheSpotify95
      @TheSpotify95 7 лет назад

      Exactly my train of thoughts. I'd already suggested on another video (think it was DiodeGoneWild's video regarding the deadly camping light) about modifications using a lithium cell and a TP4056; I reckon that removing the input jack and shoving a protected TP4056 in it would work nicely. All you'd need to then do is connect the power to the correct pins on the board.
      I might buy one of these in the future, plus a dodgy camping light, to see if these conversions to protected TP4056 would be possible. As I have quite a lot of spare lithium cells around!

    Odd that the resistors seem to be three different values. Perhaps it's a fairly bogus attempt to regulate the current by limiting the base current and relying on the transistors' betas? More likely, it's just "sweep the floor" construction where they use whatever resistors they happen to pick up.

Mentioned this to an Engineering (EBME) colleague, and his view is that many may be "seconds", de-identified and sold in bulk for pennies on the pound. Essentially, chips that don't "quite" meet the Mfr's listed specs, but are deficient in a minor (rather than major) fashion. Any thoughts or comments on this?? (Ta in advance from Sunny Vanuatu!)

      You could use a beefy low value resistor in series and just measure the voltage drop and do an ohm's law calculation. You don't have an inductive/clamp ammeter? I bought one from Radio Shack that does up to 800amps AC/DC. Definintely a worthy investment.

      yes,yes , like I says - I know I should do it like that or with a shunt of some sort. However, I do not have any resistive elements on hand and I am picking it up from a delivery office .If I make a shunt from a wire , it might look too sketchy :D I can only test it there and if I miss any flaw - I have to live with it , no returns after that .
      Also idk if the damn thing wont fry itself after a few seconds connected on a dead short :D
      Thanks for the reply anyway :D I'll do it tomorrow and post how it went.(it should work, I think-famous last words)
      Edit: yeah I would love to have the clamps :D but why do you think I am buying cheap shit:D and testing it with cheap shit ?

      If I recall correctly, it will just immediately blow the internal fuse in the multi-meter so you won't even get a proper reading.
      AC/DC clamp meters are about $37 US on Amazon. That's a lot of money but it will last you for years. I can't believe I waited 20 years to buy one, but in truth I didn't even know they existed until Clive showed them to me! That guy has really expanded my knowledge - THANK-YOU CLIVE!!

    • @javaking1000
      @javaking1000 7 лет назад +1

      No, it was years ago - sorry. I imagine anything over 12 to 15 amps would blow immediately.

    Been wondering if you'g get to this. I've had one for about 2 1/2 years . only use it with the li ion cell. it came with a generic one and a plugin charger that changes led colors when it's charged but is so light one wonders how safe it is.

      main thing is at least with th 18650 batteries is full bright doesn't last long :( while camping but hey the hook fits the tent nicely, wonder if the protection is in that very lightweight transformer?

  • @amc2004uk
    @amc2004uk 7 лет назад

    Clive, there's a thing showing on Chinese sites about a gadget that plugs into your lighter socket in your car and is supposed to save you fuel.
    Obviously it's bullshit but I'm pretty curious what's inside it and what it actually is.

    Hi Clive can you help me with a dilemma i got a 3 ph moter and in told if i wire it up in the delta wireing with capasiters on the third connection it can run on 240 v is this true

    • @bigclivedotcom
      @bigclivedotcom  7 лет назад +1

      You can run some motors that way, but only in low torque applications. It's much more viable to buy a standard Chinese motor inverter drive on eBay and get full speed and power control.

      A led video light would be better. 96 led with diffuser and warming filter $14 on ebay.
      The colour rendering index for these cheap "white" leds is pretty average.

    charging can also mean filling a container to the full extend. commonly used with guns. I'd say you can charge the device by putting batteries in.
    its a little bit of a stretch though.

      you can not only charge a battery you can also charge a gun with a round for example. you could say its also charging if you put a battery into the slot.

    • @jort93z
      @jort93z 7 лет назад +2

      i mean, chinese characters commonly mean 5 or more english words at once. its quite plausible that the character for "charging" as in batteries also means putting something into a container.
