I used to be a farmer and I made a living fine
I had a little stretch of land along the C.P. Line
But times went by, and though I tried, the money wasn't there
And bankers came and took my land, and told me "fair is fair".

"Hire you now," they'd always laugh, "we just let twenty go!"
The government, they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum
Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone,
I'm gonna be a pirate on the river Saskatchewan.

Well, you'd think the local farmers would know that I'm at large
But just the other day I found an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser
I rammed their ship and sank it, and I stole their fertilizer.
A bridge outside of Moose Jaw spans a mighty river
Farmers cross in so much fear their stomachs are a-quiver
'Cause they know that Tractor Jack is hidin' in the bay,
I'll jump the bridge and knock 'em cold and sail off with their hay.

So now he's sailing with me and we call him Salty Bob.

I never pay my income tax and screw the G.S.T. (Screw it!)

Led by their fearless front-woman Derina Harvey, this five-piece Celtic-rock group offers a fresh take on traditional tunes and intersperse that offering with their own original jigs and reels. Their infectious rhythmic undertow is layered with rock guitar, dizzying fiddle motifs, and topped by Derina’s powerful voice. These transplanted east-coasters have earned a reputation with their high-energy live show, leaving many an audience out-of-breath and hollering from the dance floor!
The band has proven to be a crowd-pleaser wherever they go. Though the band is based in Alberta, 2015 has seen the group travel across the country, with three trips to Newfoundland to their credit where they have entertained crowds at theatres, festivals, and pubs. They have been featured twice on the main stage of George Street Festival in St. John's, once opening for NL favourites Shanneyganock. Most recently, they have shared the stage with other east-coast favourites such as Jimmy Rankin, The Irish Descendents, Pogey, and even some rock acts including The Trews, Kim Mitchell, and Trooper.
The band continues to build on a growing fan base by promoting their self-titled debut album (released in 2013). The record has garnered radio airplay in multiple regions in Canada (CKUA in Edmonton; K-Rock and Radio Newfoundland in St. John's, NL; CBC, Canada-wide). Their second album entitled "Rove and Go" (released May, 2016) has already gotten airplay on over 30 community and college radio stations across Canada.

Regina is central Canada, so it's safe to assume that in this particular case..."regina" in the song is in reference to the fact that it's the Queens land, and not the city. "Regina's Mighty Shore" IE: The Queens Mighty Shore. The City of Regina is landlocked. Would be pointless to make that claim in the song if it was landlocked lol...

If theJolly Roger is seen in Regina then they are not on the Saskatchewan River.
I think that's part of the joke. The song also says they will travel to new mexico to stay pirating. New mexico is a landlocked state known for it's desert.
Maybe they have amphibious ships?

@@ItsAsparageese I was thinking they had retractable wheels, there was a cartoon called The Pirates of Dark Water, which was a pirate show set in a sci fi fantasy world where they had transforming galleons that can flip their sails horizontal which let them glide. Please look it up, I swear its real! 😅🥳

Also, since my last comment, I've decided it suits the song far better to have the ship towed by a tractor when on land; a farmer would already have one, and I can just picture a horse and a couple of cows hanging out on the deck (munching pirated grain/hay, of course) instead of being made to work lol!
Also-also, I have a fun Monty Python -esque vision of Mountie Bob riding a horse alongside a road, trying frustratedly to wave down the tractor-towed boat, before dismounting and wading onto the road and making swimmy motions to reach it XD

I love this song but.. why'd you guys change the chorus like that? It's basically nothing, and I probably wouldn't notice it if not for the fact I'm used to.. well not the original, but Captain Tractor's version.
The change, for those unaware: their intro to the chorus is "It's a heave (ho) ho (ho)". Both the original and CT's are "And it's a heave (ho) hi (ho)" which kinda just.. fits better in my ear? Idk maybe I'm being nitpicky
Every other version, including the original, pales in comparison to this masterpiece.

OK, I love this, but now I gotta know which came first, this or Last Bristolian Pirate. This one's a bit more rock, and that one's a bit more traditional shanty style, but aside from the place names, about 90% of the lyrics are exactly the same. It's statistically nigh impossible that one isn't a reimagining of the other.
Also, now I want to try and make a Southern Maryland version.
Also also, I looked it up, Saskatchewan is the original, but I think some of the UK place names flow a bit better, although that may just be because I was exposed to The Longest Johns first.

The substitution of Tesco for co-op is a joke which is only accessible to people who know the original lyrics and British supermarkets, and doesn't quite work because a farmer is more likely to sell to a co-op than directly to Tesco. And "bum" doesn't have the same meaning in British English: I assume they couldn't find a replacement which scanned. So I give Saskatchewan a slight edge over Bristol, but they're both fun.
