@@jp783Yes. Really. Nearly 75% of the NHL's revenue was being spent on player salaries, that's way too much for any sports league. @@jp783 It's on Wikipedia. Also, you can't cry greed when the players were making 75% of the revenue of teams. Gary is right on one thing, an athlete should not be gauged on his ability to be payed, but rather be gauged on his ability to play. Exactly what went wrong with the NFL with no ceiling on salary caps. They're plagued with people who made it to the top of their ranks, and never play the same since they've got the $ they've always dreamed of. Shame on Bettman for locking out, shame on the NFL for not realizing their own shortfalls. This is why the NHL plays a more genuine game, they're not playing for money, they want the cup.

I hope not, I hope the MLB owners and the MLBPA will work in good faith, and for a a fair and balance new CBA gets ratified before payers report to Spring Training in February 2022.
Not really. It's a business and business comes before everything else. The NHL isn't the NFL or MLB. Player salaries were rising faster then league revenues. The league was losing hundreds of millions of dollars and the players selfishly choose skyrocketing earnings over the future of the league. The salary cap and revenue sharing instituted after the 05 lockout secured the future of the league and made it a better league for the fans. Fans sided with the owners in 05. The NHLPA head was fired. The players absolutely got destroyed by Bettman. He drew a line in the sand and stood firm which ended up being a great move.

Ironically, the whole point of the lockout was to help smaller market teams, but all it did was benefit the Rangers and Los Angeles area teams disproportionally by forcing them to pay more for scouting. The rule changes out of the lockout saved the game, but those could have happened without cancelling a season
