- The Style Council performing 'Heavens Above' on Saturday Live, 1987.
From 'The Cost Of Loving' (1987).
Lyrics:
Heavens above what have we done
Oh, we've killed off the thing we had so little of
True, love has no truth without a price
But the cost of loving has been blown sky high
Spend on the hope the call The Peacemaker
And pray to their God - the Heavy Rainmaker
Paegans of wealth they dance so freely
As they give away the life that comes so cheaply
Don't you see - there's a better way for us to be
And in the back of your mind - you know its just a matter of time
Time here today is life tomorrow
Oh but life means less now the time is borrowed
Paid for in blood, the donors seem keen
As they realise too late they've been so cheated
Surely by now we've paid the price
What is there left to sacrifice
You take the power - you take the pay
You steal the will and have the say
I'm sure by now there's not much left
One hand on heart - one on a breast
You steal the milk - you milk the land
But your time is up - your time is sand!
a message to jam fans. Get over it! its his life and TSC were such a great band. You cant compare the two, but vocally and the music was far SUPERIOR.Any USA fans out there?
Paul has never written a bad song in his life. the song writting, the musicanship, the arangements, the lyrics, the look. it's just that many never get it. such is life.
No he has written some clunkers but they are very rare ... he’s the greatest songwriter in my view
How is this audience so asleep? I’d be shitting myself I saw this performance in person. Mick Paul and Dee are so talented
i saw THE STYLE COUNCIL live, they were awesome and DEE C Lee is gorgeous.
Me too, in Bologna...they was terrible great ! the SC has been an explosion in the rich great British music of 80's
weller has not ever released bad material IMO.. everything hes done has had melody, great musicianship and songwriting
Amen
And let no one forget the greatness of Mike Talbot!!
Beg to differ. The album this song comes from is mostly a dud. This song is one of the exceptions.
@@BzAdt I think Its a great album moving in to the field of electro rnb ,with a flat production / mix and some recordings a bit too downtempo. They had just revamped the production studio from analog with an expensive digital mixer and didn't have a handle on it. I've heard live versions of many of the tracks that sound way better. TSC never cared about pleasing the audience with any album that sounded just like the last and I love them for that .
deep down weller is a mod and a soulie - TSC was his more soulful period. I think he did it quite well :)
Divine music !!
Brillant, what a Song, was 18 and IT burns till now. Thanks Paul. Memories over and over........
saw this video on MTV in the 80s and still remember the song today. thank goodness for youtube. i thought Dee c lee's voice and beauty were highlighted underrated.
Those 4 ones great musicians together are pure magic. Plus in the company of a always great band just makes you happy. What a great band Style Council is. I miss them together. Dee c lee’s voice matched with Weller’s is pure gold.
この曲ほんとにかっこいいんだよね!

今も大好きだ♡
I hate to be labeled a "Wellerite", but not only, at age 41, do I still love TSC, but I even loved "Confessions of a Pop Group." I think for Weller, all he ever wanted was to create music that inspired and sounded beautiful. I suspect he must have grown a little bitter after "Confessions" did poorly and many abandoned the band, not to mention the dance album being rejected.
We share the same love for the Confession LP. When I got the album after its release, it had me at the opening track, It's a very deep sea. I immediately understood why TSC went down this route musically. It was a natural progression. To me, Confessions ranks first as TSC's best release.
@nigelfelixcheongde2980 I love how TSC followed a new sound with every album, not just resting on the laurels of what sound was previously successful. It had to run its course as the 80's drew to a close , but when you see that level of artistic integrity, it makes it easy to see why the Jam had to be ended after 5 or 6 albums.
Really liked the orange album. Full of duets.vocals from Paul are great. Could have got rid of the rap song, but rest is great
Bad album but this and cost of loving are classics....
Cost ot loving, heavens above, angel and it didn't matter. I loved all these
Re-fu@kin cool song, live, arrangements, female voice... Since 1987 to nowdays
The Style council is FOREVER
My words, thanks
I see Jorge Benjor (Brazilian Music) Influence in this song.
Amazing song - so many twists and turns !
Zombie TV audience. How hot was that?
saddly that happened to a lot of great bands in the 80s. Lots of talent wasted away.
It's like Sting vs. The Police: two different animals altogether. Well said.
最高だな、オイw
Brilliant song. That bit where Dee sings' There's a better place for us to be"", then Weller responds " At the back of your mind',..( i guess it's the bridge?) is just amazing, gorgeous. Whole song is amazing. The Style Council were amazing. One of the best pop bands of the very stacked 80s
the set looks like the inside of a TGI Fridays. oh, I forgot...the 80s...
Funny...this song is so great but it's never included in ANY of the many "Greatest Hits" compilations. I've often wondered why. Anyone know?
because it was never released as a single
I don't know if that's the right answer but most record labels are shitty and shady, greatest hits are just repackaged money grabs anyway 😏..they made a video for this song though, from the 'Jerusalem' movie
Bass player stealing the show....such impressive bass work
great band
is he really playing guitar in this?
@karaki4mari No clue what you are saying, but thumbs up to you! ;-)
yea, it's the shite alright.
bloody great pop song....
and there is nothing wrong with that!
Such an underrated album some great tunes ana Dee Xx
your spot on but i dont think weller liked the word pop cheers
And Paul singing means a world
@ixnay66 - I have often wondered the same thing....
