    Hi! Thanks for this! I just bought a brand new one of these models from Kohler-all the inner workings of the upper tank were pre-assembled. After installation, the canister would not seat well, causing the water to slowly flow down around it, repeatedly causing the refill value to open every 5-20 minutes (randomly). I thought the gasket itself had a flaw. Your video showed me how to disassemble the canister apparatus-whereupon I suddenly discovered that they, from the factory, had made the chain one link too short!!! This prevented the canister from falling down completely, preventing the seal from working. How ridiculous is that???? But your video caused me to fully understand what to do. Many, many thanks!!!!! You made the fix quick and easy. Hats off to your efforts, good sir!

    I just replaced one today! A far better system than the flapper! In a 24 unit apartment building it was the only Kohler unit we have. Ran to Lowe's and found the replacement is now a yellow one. Definitely GOTTA scale off that old seal!

    Folks, don't put ANY cleaning products--tabs, etc.--in your top tank. That is why this guy's seal failed. Clean your toilet at the bowl. Let nothing but water go inside the top tank. Also, unhook the chain before doing this job. It's very easy, and you won't end up twisting and shortening the chain while turning the canister. A too-short chain can cause the canister not to seat all the way, and your toilet water will run. And, if your valves are over a few years old, you might want to turn off your water at the meter. Doing so will help prevent having to replace and old valve (a pain in the butt, and more expense), instead of just replacing a simple seal. Lastly, as of 8/12/22, Lowes has the Koehler center post that holds the canister. So, if you break this while turning to loosen or tighten, you have this post available. Cost was $10 and change for the center post.

I’ll look into a Walter filter to correct the problem because you’re right the water should not be that color. Thank you again and I hope the video was informative. Yours went about as well as mine. I had trouble getting it to turn so I could get it out, couldn't undo the chain, etc. After a couple of flushes, I finally got it to seat properly, had to mess with that center piece, trying not to break it, Bit it works now!!!! Thanks for the tutorial!

      I’m fairly certain that the rubber rots much faster in the presence of toilet tank cleaners. Ours did fine for 5+ years until we started using the drop-ins. Less than 1 year later, and ours rotted exactly like this.

    Do all Kohler toilets use the same size gasket seal?

    • @TheSneakerCraze
      @TheSneakerCraze  3 года назад +1

      I’m not certain it really kind of depends on if it’s a canister like the model I have or something newer but the gasket seal for this canister is cheap and there are probably even cheaper ones on Amazon now. I just picked up one from my local Home Depot. There’s really not many gasket sizes if you were to search for your model it would tell you if it’s the correct gasket. Also sorry to everyone that’s watched this I uploaded this like 5 years ago and I’m not a professional RUclipsr I was recording this myself using my phone. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it and I hope it helped.

    • @Greatdad

      @@TheSneakerCraze Thanks! I found the exact one on Amazon. It looks like Kohler had two sizes but changed the color when they changed size. All is working great now. warning: I did manage to break the locking mechanism on the canister but that also was only $8 on amazon (arrivng tomorrow). Plastic in water over time just gets crusty and easily breakable. Now if I can figure out how to fix my new Toto which is also running incessantly.

      Thanks most of my videos are about shoes but after owning a home and having to learn how to fix everything yourself to save money is a lot of work. I had to watch RUclips videos on how to replace a toilet how fix hot/cold cartridge in the showe my heater went and ac went out I had to replace a moherboard in my unit they wanted to charge me a thousand to do that I just looked up the part for 250-300 and just unplugged all the cables and moved it over to the new board saved myself 700 bucks. My heater went out it wouldn't stay ignited so I just took a napkin to the flame sensor wiped it down a little and got heat again. I never realized how much stuff could go wrong owning a home lol. I even had to replace my ac unit condenser tray that the condensation of water drips into because it was rusted and had holes in so water was l leaking through my roof lol. I had to watch RUclips videos because they changed the how new trays look like so I had to saw off extra pvp pipes to make it and had to buy glue that seals the the pvp pipe so it wouldn't leak. My house isn't even that old either lol. Glad the vid helpted! thanks for watching and commenting 💯💯🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👊🏻😎

    Kohler toilets cost a lot more than others, so I DON'T KNOW why Kohler does not improve this SEAL defect in all toilets !!

    • @SKYGUY1
      @SKYGUY1 4 года назад +1

      It's not defective. My first seal lasted 9 years and 7 months. We installed the toilet when we bought the house 9 years and 9 months ago and I am replacing it for the first time today. If you use chemical cleaners in the tank to automatically clean your bowl, that will cause premature deterioration of the seal also. Mineral buildup will prevent a seal also if your water is particularly hard. I see signs of sediment or mineral buildup in the bottom of this tank. My tank has none of that after 10 years. Those things have nothing to do w/ quality of the product. No... I don't work for Kohler. Thanks for the guidance. It worked first time.

    • @andrewxc1335
      @andrewxc1335 4 года назад

      I can verify that we used our toilet for 5+ years without tank cleaner w/o problem, but within a year of using drop-in tank cleaners, it rotted out.

      Thanks for the reply i may need to look into that. we don't use well water we have a mud department for water. the water that comes out of the showers and sinks is not brown brownish like that but i'll look into the house water filter if we have one. i've had to do a lot of maintenance repairs myself like fixing my heating unit replacing the hot/cold water cartridge in the stand up shower. the ac condenser water catch pan rusted had to replace that with a new one and i had to figure all these things out either by watching youtube vids or trial and error. You realize that you kinked the chain that connects flush handle to the flush tower by indiscriminately turning the flush tower over right?The water level in your toilet tank is way too high,the water level should be from half inch to three quarters of an inch from the top of the flush tower (or overflow tube if your toilet has a standard flush valve with an overflow tube.).
