    372. There is no meditative concentration for him who lacks insight,
and no insight for him who lacks meditative concentration.
He in whom are found both meditative concentration and insight,
    indeed, is close to Nibbana.

It is the first time I have heard a delivery of such content in the format of ‘let us have a chat about this down the pub’. The tempo is all very liberating and pre-conception shattering.
The lead is obviously showing the results of a Vipassana on his own understanding, giving the fruit of an order of knowledge which is irresistible.
There is great value in this video. Thank you for the time and effort you have made producing it and also for the years of commitment made to come to such an understanding.

Before you comment, I can see that many people are confused by what Venerable Nyanamoli is saying, I myself was when I first stumbled upon these talks a year ago and couldn't understand anything, unfortunately, if you haven't watched the other talks, it will not make much sense because the terminologies and way they talk is based upon already assumed knowledge of what they have discussed, so if you're new, you have to watch other talks to form an understanding of what he is saying. I would recommend starting from "COMPREHENDING THE MINDFULNESS OF BREATHING" video, again, it will probably be a bit overwhelming trying to grasp all these concepts reframed in a different way, but as you watch other talks, you'll realize that there is a lot of wisdom in them, just give it a try, watch little by little, try to really pay attention and in time things will start to make sense and you'll start seeing the results in your own practice.

He just asked a simple question , I dont know why the bhante used thousands of words to explain .
Samatha (jhana) trains the mind to concentrate. This is often translated as the "tranquility of the mind", or "mind-calmness". Samatha is said to be achieved by practicing single-pointed meditation.
Vipassana trains the awareness to realize it is not the mind, the self-awareness of mental activity. Vipassanā, insight, which enables one to see, explore and discern "formations"

If your mind has very much agitation / distractions, put most of your effort into intensity of 1pointedness focus - This is Samatha.
If your mind has very much tranquility / lethargy , put most of your effort into noticing changes in your attention field - This is Vipassana
Balance is essential in order to discipline the mind, in order to not get distracted. - This requires both Samatha&Vipassana.
a)Start with high intensity of 1pointedness focus (intense focus on the stone, but slightly unfocused) & a small attention field(aware of the object of meditation, aware of putting your focus on the object, aware of the intensity of that focus, instantly aware of the shift of attention when concentration is distracted)
b)Eventually u will be able to have low intensity of 1pointedness focus & a wide attention field & u can do this without being distracted.
Initial attention field: Aware of the object, aware of putting your focus on the object, aware of the intensity of that focus, instantly awar of the shift of attention when focus is distracted
Later add to your attention field: Body postures and movement & feelings
Later add to your attention field: Thoughts that pop up in the mind (“thinking” about past and future about: your body, your identity, your things, your surroundings, your time)
Later add to your attention field: The 5 hindrances (energy , distractions)
Every moment one is clearly aware of "reality" is like a single drop of rain. Meditation is like falling rain.
If this explication is wrong, why is it wrong?

Vipassana is better, don't bother with samatha.
