  • The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia said the vessel was reported overdue around 9:13 p.m. Sunday, about 435 miles (700 kilometres) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Lt. Cmdr. Len Hickey said a Canadian Coast Guard vessel and military aircraft were assisting the search effort, which was being led by the U.S. Coast Guard in Boston.

    A few things
1] what was the dive plan? What part of the ship was to be explored?
2] If they got fouled, why no comms with the surface
3] Did they go inside of her & get fouled or did they bump into something & a section of the hull collapsed on them? If the sub's hull was breached the end would have been instantaneous & painless, but the last few seconds would have been terrifying as they would have known what was coming. [Just like the Scorpin & Thresher]
4] If the sub is unrecoverable [for whatever reasons] they will be entombed down there for all time & the only things will be brass plaques in memory of them.

@@christiegroves The hatch issue is only speculation for now [until we find it] . She has about 36-40 hours of O2 left on board . If she had any issues at 8500 [the Titanic is at 12500 ft] she would implode & the folks inside would not have felt a thing at the end. As they would have been turned into pulp in an instant at the 3771 psi water rushed in. The terror comes as they know what is coming as the sub would be creeking & groaning, & there was no power or abality to do anything to save themselves.

This has the unpleasant vibes of the Columbia shuttle disaster in that it is a vehicle under extreme conditions that has all of a sudden disappeared, both being situations where it would take very little to make it become immediately fatal. Once the shuttle disappeared from radar and didn't land on schedule it became certain they were lost, there was no plausible scenario in which it could have ended otherwise. While this isn't as certain as that no one has heard from it for 7 hours (they're supposed to transmit every 15 minutes to show they're okay) and it should have come up automatically by now regardless power loss. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think this is going to have a happy ending.

people in the comments like "Oh no way I'd do that!" Well yeah because only a tiny percentage of the population can even relate to spending $250,000, in one day, just to see something for a couple minutes.
The only relatable situation I can even imagine is like when you're at the circus, and for 25 cents you can go inside a tent to see the worlds biggest pig. Sure, most people really aren't excited and going out of there way to see the world's biggest pig. But shoot you're already at the circus, the tent's only a minute walk from where you're at, it's convenient, interesting, and won't have any effect on your finances. Might as well see the pig.
Then the pig rolls over a squishes all the visitors. And the rich people who pay $250,000 dollars to see a sunken ship are like "why wouldn't they just look at the pig from outside the tent.."
Idk what I am even getting at. Just trying to relate to someone who spends what I make over the course of a few years in a single day. We are such a strange species..

Its not a 4 hour trip down.... my uncle does the same thing n has been to the titanic numerous times ect. Look its little over 12500 feet down thats over 2 miles deep. The pressures at that level are around 10,000 pounds per square inch... so if it sprung a leak.... its game over , they wouldnt have suffered if that is what happened. Because it would implode in less than a micro second. It takes 2 hours to reach titanic... not 4 hours... if they do 4hours to reach it then they are traveling very very slow down... its always been 2 hour maybe a few mins longer.. but 4 hours thats a really long time... if it got caught on the ship its gonna be almost impossible to free them... hopefully they didn't free fall down into the ship through the grand staircase its possible and if it did we wont be getting them back.... if they are sitting on the ship or beside it at the bottom.. they can use blow bags and tow straps chains to float em back to the surface.....

Who would go down several miles in something that is operated by a video game controller???? No backup communication. You would think the billionaire would have more brains than to get involved with this type of operation. Lots of money at stake. Be careful what you wish for.

Hopefully it is just something minor preventing it from surfacing, as at least then the air gives them a few days to be found and hooked and brought up. (depending on how quickly people realized it was missing) - If they had any accident, like bumping into Titanic or something else, even the smallest crack would probably pretty much instantly crush/flood the sub at these pressures, odds are one wouldn't even know what hit them at least.

There is too much bad juju pain tragedy trauma there...... not a tourist attraction. It's disrespectful to turn it into a money maker like the pearl Harbour ships you walk over.

You guys keep talking about the fact that it has four days of air but since it’s not tethered to a surface ship that means it’s run on battery power and if they want to conserve batteries they’re not gonna have lights or heat so they might succumb to the cold before the oxygen runs out.
