A bug myself and other mages took advantage of in WotLK was to equip 2-pc Trial of the Crusader tier + anything we had to pump our spirit as high as possible and then cast Molten Armor before putting our normal gear back on. The bug was that we would still retain the additional spirit scaling on Molten Armor which made for some very high crit values.

Arcane Blast debuff increases the mana cost way more in wotlk than in tbc, which means you cannot spam AB and you will be forced to use arcane missiles unless the fight is super short. The t8 2-set has a 45 second internal cooldown. So even with high proc chance it will not be up all the time. Great video tho!
Kirin Tor set from ulduar is just that, the uniform of the Kirin Tor which makes sense, since they are assisting in the expedition into Ulduar. They didn't revisit pants for mages all the way until legion so its a nice change.

Just to say it here right now, I think Mages turn out to be second under rogue in Ulduar. But that's just a guess from someone who played back in Wrath. The weirdest thing is going to be the fact that we start with the final Wrath patch. The amount of class changes in each patch throughout Wrath were extensive. ...It's gonna be EXCITING!
having only played mage in Cata, I find it interesting watching these videos and noticing when the playstyle I'm familiar with start. It doesn't quite look like that's the case, but after watching and listening to you describe Arcane, I can see the seeds of the "Burst phase / mana regen and conservation phase" dance it had in Cataclysm
Frostfire Bolt was the go-to spec during Naxx. I believe the reason you see more arcane on pservers in T7 is changes from the early patches to 3.3.5 and is not representative of how the live game developed.
from what I remember, frostfire was essentially viable in og wrath because you could double dip into frost and fire talents and they'd both affect frostfire bolt. when they patched it they referred to it as a bug
@@solaire5668 this exactly. Ffb was abusing interactions not intended. Also it was a new playstyle wanted by mages for a long time(elementalist) and many people played it because it's a cool spec. Arc still pumped iirc
It's almost been 3 years now since the inception of our mage mains during classic. There's a certain caricature around the mage that you'll find is true in most. When the community predicted that mages won't do well in tbc and we showed up to p1/2 content blasting... The warlocks couldn't believe it. Long live the mage, whether you're frost, arcane, elemental or fire!
I think that it's worth noting about fire spec in pvp that Dragon's Breath and Cone of Cold are no longer sharing a cooldown as they did in TBC, which is a good thing since there aren't much slows in a fire mage kit.

I was always a mage main and one of the most memorable experiences i had was during the early days of wrath of the lich king. I was running Halls of Stone back when heroic content was still challenging. In the Brann Bronzebeard fight, we were on the verge of wiping, but my kiting ability with frost nova and last second ice block (I was playing frost) managed to stall out the timer long enough for the fight to be a win. Other things that helped was ice barrier to mitigate the passive damage, as well as being a draenei with my racial heal. That very same dungeon run, we were on the final boss and again were on the verge of wiping, but once again kiting with blink, an early ice block caused a drop in threat, and stalling out the timer for Brann to release the stone dwarves caused us to win the fight again with me being hte sole survivor. I had never received as much praise from a group as i did that day.
I remember lots of mages switching arcane when they got ICC gear later into ICC patch as the fights got shorter and they would literally just spam arcane blast not resetting the buff apart from evo
Leveling as Fire is a blast, too, though not quite as clean as Frost. With it's instant casts and amazing AoE burst, it's quite effective in the open world. Incredibly fun in dungeons too. WotLK Fire Mage has to be one of my favorite specs in all of WoW's history.
Fire mage is only good because it does the most dmg out of all rdps in wotlk. Also its the easiest one to play. You just stand all the way in the back thx to talents which add range and you just spam 2 spells without any thought needed. I mean its nice at first, but get repetitive really fast. Still better than arcane. That is for sure.

I remember lvling as fire and it waa the most fun i had along with prot war... U just spam living bomb on everyone... dragons breath-> instant FS-> blast wave -> instant FS and then they just start to blow up from living bomb finishing its duration.. and u get lot of instant pyro procs to finish them off... huge aoe dmg... was rly fun
Waiting to hear the anguish when people remember knocking whole raids out of the naxx entryway with the blastwave and thunderstorm. Mages can dismount people from flyer's and iceblock or cost free slowfall while waving and laughing. Think druids get typhoon, same thing but directional....gonna be ear splitging greatness.
One fun trivia bit, in early Cata progress you can use the ICC set to prebuff the 18% bonus dmg for 30s. Was unfortunately removed eventually with similar gimicks blocked :(

Sure, but even with that glyph, Frost mage is one of the worst PvE dps specs in the game. Even BM hunter deals more damage and that's not considered a good PvE spec either. You would get much better results playing Arcane or Fire depending on gear.

6:42 On Hotstreak, it's worth mentioning these "non periodic crits" does not include pyroblast itself. I forgot this about wrath myself. Later versions of this talent include Pyroblast so chaining hotstreaks got crazy.

Now my guild only did 10 man normal so I guess maybe I didn't have the stats to really make fire work, but arcane was a beast and was actually really fun. Yes it is arcane blast spam, but there's a bit more nuance to it then that. Burn phase vs conserve phase, etc.

No, was it as widely played as frostfire?No. Was it shit? Depended on the player. Had heavy reliance on deep freezes extra damage on immune to stun targets. Source, played through on blackrock during that period and watched players from Eminence, Planeteers and other major guilds of the time and realm. If you want to be an ass about things, catchya later.
One of the most fun mage pvp spec is PomPyro. You take Presence of Mind instead of living bomb. This spec is heavy rng based because you need one hotstreak so you can cast pyro + instant second pyro as follow up. This spec is fun at the begining of the wotlk even tho crit chance is lower, because later everyone gonna have a lot of resillience that is reducing crit effects. Double pyro crit can be suprising for the enemy and it is really fun to play. :D

Mage is awesome. You can finally go arcane before geared for fire and become an aoe monster with living bomb and flamestrike. Arguably the highest dps in the game.
Sad to see you didn’t go over PvE Frost at all which is what I play, not even for dungeoning. It may not be the best spec but I still prefer it’s gameplay over Fire and Arcane. Thanks for the upload but was a little disappointed by that!
the deep freeze deals damage to targets permanently immune to stun. i.e. bosses, when used with fingers of frost proc its an instant cast dealing good damage, the only problem is its long ass cooldown for pve.
Watched all of these, good stuff. Can't wait for the warrior. I think all the metaslave poopsocking is a bit much in an easy game as WOLTK. "Noo you can't be bear tank or BM hunter", it's not viable it's griefing".
3.3.5 talents are present from the begining so power curve is a little different from original classic. I can assure you good fire mage around 3.8-4k gs and items with haste spirit can top dps on naxx.
Priest was by far the best healer in WotLK. Tank healer, decent HoTs with renew, amazing reaction with instant heals, best raid healer... PLayed mine at a pretty high level back then and only once I encounter a resto druid who came close to my numbers, in multiple scenarios (not just talking about raw mindless aoe). THen shadow is super fun too and a decent mid field DPS who can shine in occasion and who will top the meters in Naxx :p
Does arcane power and presence of mind share an internal 15s cooldown with each other? I remember when they added that in I think 3.1 and that was actually why I quit wow forever b/c I had been an arcane mage main for a long time. I thought that was a really unneeded nerf and just killed a lot of niche and cool specs and an old staple of mage play (arcane power + PoM + Pyro). I will probably play shaman this time if they keep that internal cooldown.
Im playing WotLK on a Private Server for a couple of years now, and maybe i can add some to the Fire Mage FrostFireBolt (FFB) is viable, however not optimal. You can spec into it earlier than you could do with TormentTheWeak(TTW) but TTW will outscale FFB. TTW also has focus Magic wich FFB lacks. So yeah, basically at every point Arcane or TTW Fire is better, however, only ever so slightly that ure never doing your group a misservice. Its 100% Viable, but never actually optimal.
@@KCswiish On launch ure prolly going to stick with arcane, wich is a kinda dull 2 button rotation. U simply dont have enought krit to make either Fire spec work. I think forst is more fun, it has utility, a pet, and a proc wich is more fun than simply pressing 5 buttons over and over again. The dmg however wont compare to arcane. The fun in arcane is being on top of the dmg meter. With T7 gear or early Ulduar you might give FFB a shot. The dmg will be behind arcane again, however if you have firelocks in your raid u might actually do more raid dmg. with T10 u can go TTW or stay with arcane. Arcane is actually so easy and consitent it might be the best dmg wise up until t10 hc. My advise, try them all out, i like them all, i personally prefer arcane into FFB tho
Tier 8 4-set is next to useless for Arcane, so we'll probably see the swap in t8, just like on most wotlk servers. I guess unless we see some weird skip the tier set stack haste arcane going into t9, but I doubt it

No arcane mage section makes me sad. Even now on private servers, you’ll see arcane mages in RMP comps in 3s due to the burst and control. Shoutout to Orangemarmalade
Yes, there certainly is a lot of nuance to the 2 buttons casters have to press ;) Honestly you stand out on any class in wow because 80% of players are mouth breathers. Even if your class has literally ONE button, you'll still see some people doing half your DPS somehow.

Can anyone better versed in Mages help me understand why the Glyph of Fireball is worth taking? That seems like such a tiny boost in cast time to warrant sacrificing the DoT component.
Because you never let a dot finish normally perhaps? You'd get a couple small ticks then it's reapplied. If you get like 500 dmg in ticks it's not that big compared to getting quicker fireballs which do more damage
@@probablyilliterate The dot from fireball isn't like... a real dot hah. As an example, in SWP my mage can crit 8.5k fireballs, but the dot ticks for 36 dmg

Grants depending on Gear 2-3 percent, extremly strong.
also not a bug, works just like snapshotting battle shout with Solarian's Sapphire. but it seems like both things got fixed in the beta

considering players are better and people are minmaxing, bosses will die quicker, i think arcane will win on classic early phases.

That's how Arc mages topped charts consistently. Saved an extra talent point for somewhere else.

You can use Frost under certain circumstances such as a kiter on gluth or if you don't have anyone providing that mana regen buff.

Yes, but there are much better trinkets available at that point.
And most trinkets effects can stack.
I remember killing heroic bosses in less than 5 seconds towards the end of WotLK as arcane.
Frostfire bolt does its job just fine as long as you’re frost and insta cast it. How far was it supposed to take off?
I do love this series even if I don’t plan on playing WOTLK or at least play it only casually.

Priest was by far the best healer in WotLK.
Tank healer, decent HoTs with renew, amazing reaction with instant heals, best raid healer...
PLayed mine at a pretty high level back then and only once I encounter a resto druid who came close to my numbers, in multiple scenarios (not just talking about raw mindless aoe).
THen shadow is super fun too and a decent mid field DPS who can shine in occasion and who will top the meters in Naxx :p
Does arcane power and presence of mind share an internal 15s cooldown with each other? I remember when they added that in I think 3.1 and that was actually why I quit wow forever b/c I had been an arcane mage main for a long time. I thought that was a really unneeded nerf and just killed a lot of niche and cool specs and an old staple of mage play (arcane power + PoM + Pyro). I will probably play shaman this time if they keep that internal cooldown.

Im playing WotLK on a Private Server for a couple of years now, and maybe i can add some to the Fire Mage
FrostFireBolt (FFB) is viable, however not optimal. You can spec into it earlier than you could do with TormentTheWeak(TTW) but TTW will outscale FFB.
TTW also has focus Magic wich FFB lacks.
So yeah, basically at every point Arcane or TTW Fire is better, however, only ever so slightly that ure never doing your group a misservice. Its 100% Viable, but never actually optimal.

@@KCswiish On launch ure prolly going to stick with arcane, wich is a kinda dull 2 button rotation. U simply dont have enought krit to make either Fire spec work.
I think forst is more fun, it has utility, a pet, and a proc wich is more fun than simply pressing 5 buttons over and over again. The dmg however wont compare to arcane. The fun in arcane is being on top of the dmg meter.
With T7 gear or early Ulduar you might give FFB a shot. The dmg will be behind arcane again, however if you have firelocks in your raid u might actually do more raid dmg.
with T10 u can go TTW or stay with arcane. Arcane is actually so easy and consitent it might be the best dmg wise up until t10 hc.
My advise, try them all out, i like them all, i personally prefer arcane into FFB tho

Playing a mage as my current main. Now I'm at the crossroad of do I stay Mage or switch to Boomy as my main.
Tier 8 4-set is next to useless for Arcane, so we'll probably see the swap in t8, just like on most wotlk servers. I guess unless we see some weird skip the tier set stack haste arcane going into t9, but I doubt it
I remember people even switching to fire in late Naxx when they were close to T7 bis (esp. with the extra 5% crit from 4p bonus)
having your water elemental out all the time is bis for frost pve, that's why they would want that glyph

On private servers mages swap during ToC after they get the reign of the unliving trinket and a nice chunk of crit

They still are very viable in terms of overall DPS, it just arcane do like 70% of what fire do in the end

No race change or faction change. Yes you get a level 70 boost when you buy WOTLK Classic.

Can anyone with BETA access test if Frostfire bolt can proc Brain Freeze? Technically by the tooltip it should (the tooltip description is the same as what procs winters' chill), even though in pservers it doesn't. Thanks!
No arcane mage section makes me sad. Even now on private servers, you’ll see arcane mages in RMP comps in 3s due to the burst and control. Shoutout to Orangemarmalade

Yes, there certainly is a lot of nuance to the 2 buttons casters have to press ;) Honestly you stand out on any class in wow because 80% of players are mouth breathers. Even if your class has literally ONE button, you'll still see some people doing half your DPS somehow.

Can anyone better versed in Mages help me understand why the Glyph of Fireball is worth taking? That seems like such a tiny boost in cast time to warrant sacrificing the DoT component.
Because you never let a dot finish normally perhaps? You'd get a couple small ticks then it's reapplied. If you get like 500 dmg in ticks it's not that big compared to getting quicker fireballs which do more damage
@@ddspk2007 And the DoT effect doesn't scale well. Also faster casts = more procs from talents and trinkets.

@@probablyilliterate your main dot dmg is from ignite talent, which deals dot dmg if you crit and living bomb
@@probablyilliterate The dot from fireball isn't like... a real dot hah. As an example, in SWP my mage can crit 8.5k fireballs, but the dot ticks for 36 dmg
