Oh, boy. I hope you don’t rip this movie to shreds TOO much, because this is one of my all-time favorites. I saw it in the theater with my mom and got the VHS as soon as possible. Colin Firth in leather pants, a wet boat kiss, snobby Brits, a chandelier-crushing dance party, a strained but somewhat mended father-daughter relationship, Cocoa Puffs, I could go on. I loved and still love this movie.

The fact they choose the same “couple” of Pride and Prejudice show you the level of British basic cliche we are dealing with. It’s the second time that actress does not get Colin Firth in the end. 😂
The fighting over daddy thing is pretty messed up. Sadly I had to go through it with my step sister. My dad remarried and lived with my step sister and step mom but we (my brother and I) got to visit him on holidays. I didn't necessarily "fight" for my dad's affection but my step sister legit got jealous and tried everything she could to get attention on her when we visited. I never said anything about it but At some point my dad had to talk to her because he could see it was getting out of control. She loved my brother but she hated me, but she also had her own daddy/abandonment issues so. Even though i don't really like her, I just hope she's ok now.
I remember watching this for the first time and my dad almost shot for shot called the plot and I was so pissed but looking back, there’s no way a competent adult could not see the basic level plot.
I got SO anxious during that reunion scene for Amanda Bynes and Colin Firth that she was going in for a mouth-kiss. Just something about the way their heads moved and the way it was shot. My blood pressure is only now just getting back to normal

Amanda Bynes suffers from BDD. It breaks my heart knowing she probably picks her facial appearance apart in these films and feels like shit knowing her face is just there and she can't get rid of the movie. I know this is gonna get lost to the void, so I just wanted to voice some sympathy for Amanda. I wouldn't wish body dysmorphic disorder on anyone.

@@bannahannana9403 Agreed, after all this is a real quote from Colin Firth: "Actors are basically drag queens. Fun fact there’s actually an interesting story to “the stereotype that in the UK back entrances are more open than front entrances.” In 1982 a man named Michael Fagan noticed how lacking security was for the British palace. So to prove a point he broke into the palace twice. The first time during broad daylight where he walked around the palace for awhile, drank half a bottle of open wine he found and then left. The second time he snuck in at night and actually went into the queen’s bedroom. She woke up and he explained to her that she needed to improve the castles security. Then he was taken into custody. Interestingly enough laws at the time meant that he couldn’t be charged with trespassing, and the only thing they could charge him with was “stealing” that open bottle of wine from the first break-in 😂 anyway they ended up dropping the charges and DID improve “back entrance security” after that... I’m sure I got a couple details wrong, but that’s the gist. So I totally understand why that stereotype/idea of poor British security could become a running joke for years to come.

I had this really jarring mental image of Jesus and the apostles having an egg dyeing party during the Last Supper. Like Jesus is doing his whole "this is my blood, this is my body, Peter will deny me three time, Judas will betray me" thing while calmly holding down his egg and Judas is like "you're hogging the blue dye, I'm leaving and telling Rome about you!"

What a Girl Wants was going for The Princess Diaries but they missed the mark. Please do She’s The Man, which is flawed sure, but I love that damn movie. Amanda is a great actress but I’d rather watch a feature length movie of Moody’s Point.
the “london calling” playing in every movie london scene is such a pet peeve of mine. it’s about the cold war and general political upheaval and is full of social commentary. i know i’m being a huge square but it annoys me specifically because it’s a super famous fucking song that is notorious for how political it is so it’s not like people don’t know that’s what it’s about or it’s a hidden meaning. ugh
I feel similar when people use Zombie out of context or make fun of the singing style like... Sis that's about children dying because of a brutal decades-long conflict that is still impacting people's lives today.
Honestly 'Common People' would be way more fitting for movies like this. Just a quirky fun montage of them slumming it at the market with that in the background, subtly fading off the lyrics before any of them make it obvious what the song is actually saying.
I'm sorry but am I the only one who feels like I've seen this movie before. An awkward American girl being raised by a single mother finds out that their absentee father is some sort of European nobility and all of a sudden she's now the heir to some title and has to learn all the rules about how to fit into high society while a couple of scheming villains plot to take her birthright away from her. This is just an Amanda Bynes ripoff of The Princess Diaries. The movies have a lot in common.

Okay but this movie was so good for us children of divorced parents living in bfe America. Like the whole British part gave such a sense of escapism and the fantasy of your divorced parents reuniting is like an irl fairytale.
I think movies like this gave me unrealistic expectations. Reality is never as happy or functional as this stuff. My birth mom was just an incredibly troubled woman who couldn't take care of a child (/had already had had multiple children taken away by social services) There's no record of my birth father so no one knows lol

The mom was always so annoying to me. She doesn't want Daphne to know or go looking for her father and yet every year she tells her the story to make her want to know about it. Then when Daphne runs away to London and shows up at the dad's place the mom is just 'oh lol well you two have fun'. None of it makes sense to me.
"I'm trying to protect you" is what my mother would say to me to keep me childlike and dependent on her for as long as possible. It's supposedly why she denied me any kind of high school experience. I *_loathe_* Daphne's mother in this movie. Even when I first saw this movie, I knew I hated it but I didn't know why. Now I know one big reason is because I saw my own abusive mother in Daphne's, and Daphne's mother is nowhere near mine was even though my mother also would have loved to work in the same place as me, for extremely selfish reasons. To be fair, I don't like anything about this movie. A few actors are pulling off respectable performances despite the horrible writing depicting nothing but selfish people in this whole damn movie, and Daphne's mother is a target of pointed vitriol for me. I do know this is personal but I would hope no one confuses her in particular with a good character, since her motivations never make any sense anyway. When Daphne's mother said, "I'm trying to protect you," here in Nick's review, I screamed at Daphne to get away from that woman 😅
I think her being 16 turning 17 and having graduated high school was the hint to her being smart. Most graduates are 18 or turning 18 in the summer. But also, yes, this movie did make me love Colin Firth

“Oh don’t be sentimental darling, we’re not Spanish.” British mom in the show Miranda 😂😂😂
Is it the only or the last memory you have of the movie? Those two things don't work. You contradicted yourself in one sentence. Gotta love that!
@@elphbwckd212 yeah I meant to say lasting but it’s a typo. I’m sure correcting my grammar in a youtube comment section is really a productive use of your time though.🙄
But this is SO true. My mum and entire family are British (and me too lol), growing up in Australia is weird seeing how people are more expressive with their family. Funnily enough we have the same last name as them LOL
This man's sass and clever insults are unmatched. Also like the recommendations to make the movie better. These videos are always so entertaining.

12:43 As a Londoner, I can confirm that London Calling by The Clash is the only song we're legally permitted to listen to.
Do you agree they made a fake Camden Town along the Thames to shoot the market scene?
@@antonellamR2D2 yes we have to pass it legally to get into secondary school
@@antonellamR2D2 I had to go back and look, and yeah it definitely looks like that's what they were going for.
Nick I just wanted to let you know, I literally can't watch anything on tv without judging it like I'm a film director. I watch my kids cartoons like "okay and how does that make sense Llama Llama? Your tooth just showed up in grandma's clarinet? Yeah okay that just seems like a plot hole to me"

Teen girl falling into the lap of a royal family member hits different these days...
Also the actress who played Glynnis was also the mean older sister of Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth.
Good call! I knew she looked familiar!
Oof...the "teen girl falling into the lap" part was brutal!!! Well done!!! 👏👏👏
that's Anna Chancellor - also Jane Austen was her grand-grand-grand aunt in real life :)
@@AD-pm4mp so cool!
@@AD-pm4mp I did not know that. Fancy being actually related to Jane Austin and you only get to play the bitchy and inept secondary antagonist in Pride and Prejudice
Lmaooo I can’t lie I didn’t notice how annoying this movie was til I watched it as an adult but I just love the story of a kid going to meet they long lost parent and they actually embrace them.... idk why. I had both my parents lol
I agree. As dumb as the polt is, I loved this movie.
“idk why. I had both my parents” That’s hella funny😂😂 It’s so weird how we as humans can get so invested in things we can’t even relate to

Speaking of questionable co-parenting choices, could we please have The Parent Trap soon?
Hell Yeah
the way that i remember watching this whole movie while i was straightening my hair as a kid makes me very worried for 5th grade olívia's mental health AND hair

The "seaside shopping centre" looks to be Southbank, which is the most touristy place in all of London (other than maybe Buckingham Palace). The only thing a local would take you there for is to steal your phone and leave you in the Thames.
Colin firth 😍
I love this movie too!! 🥰
Nick: *sings an Annie song that isn’t Tomorrow*

Also Nick: *starts singing about cheese* I don’t actually know the rest of the words

“Hairy leg knees” sent me 💀
i thought the same thing LMAOAO i literally was like damn he knows another song from that movie ?? 😂😂🤣
I was in my school's production of Annie so I know all the songs including ones that weren't in the movie. they're permanently etched in the groves of my brain like some weirdly shaped, fever dream vinyl record. still love the play and film tho
The fact they choose the same “couple” of Pride and Prejudice show you the level of British basic cliche we are dealing with. It’s the second time that actress does not get Colin Firth in the end. 😂
They love to watch this woman pine for Colin Firth when he’s clearly not interested in her💀
She plays that part a lot.
That actress Anna Chancellor is actually a distant niece of Jane Austen!
Goddamn i cant believe i didnt catch that
The daughter was the vicars wife in the 2009 emma miniseriea
Lolll it was very emotional staging 😭😭😭😭
Same! As a child I was anxious
Lmaooo I can’t unsee it now
OMG yes, everytime I watch it back, I get really freacked out at this moment and see all of their interactions flash before my eyes and realise Collin Firth IS framed as the love interest all along 😰😱🤣 wtf lol
i thought i was the only one! theres a crazy weird amount of tension for a scene between father and daughter
Even as a child I was more in love with Collin firth in this movie than Oliver James 😂
I don't know Oliver but Ian was an annoying dumbass, so it makes sense
Me too! I was so confused why I liked the dad more than the hot guy? Then I realized, Colin Firth always wins.
Same. That accent lol
Omg yes do She’s The Man! It’s hilarious! Also, please break down Mary-Kate and Ashley movies from the early 2000’s!!
Yaas! She's the Man is an all time favorite! I hope we get to see a clip breakdown 🤞🤞🤞
I actually like that one line: "You won't get a scene, you'll get a Broadway musical."
Colin Firth my beloved, the church scene in Kingsman is so iconic
I honestly don't know how many times I've watched that. Best "fight" scene ever....and that includes "John Wick", "Old Boy", and "Raid: Redemption". Fucking brillliant!!
I had an unhealthy crush on him after watching this movie 🤣🤣🤣 my addiction to British accents began with Lord Dashwood xD

He’s an amazing actor but you can tell he doesn’t take himself too seriously at all I’m obsessed w him
@@bannahannana9403 Agreed, after all this is a real quote from Colin Firth:
"Actors are basically drag queens. People will tell you they act because they want to heal mankind or, you know, explore the nature of the human psyche. Yes, maybe. But basically we just want to put on a frock and dance."
Iconic.
So I totally understand why that stereotype/idea of poor British security could become a running joke for years to come.
need to know what that law was
Watching Nick DiRamio videos is literally like hanging out with a friend. It's partly the gay to gay communication, partly Nick's insanely charming personality and fast-paced jokes
“This movie is an hour and 47 minutes long, no movie needs to be that long”

Hahah I watched those and HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON BUT THE ELFS WERE MY FAVORITE 😍
You know that Nick doesn’t mean those movies. He’s too cool.
I haven’t seen any explicit evidence to the contrary, so nobody can tell me otherwise. Also, if you aren’t watching the extended editions you are 100% just doing it wrong.
Omg, never seen this movie but I love the supporting cast. The evil fiancé is a really prolific British actress and I love her in lesbian series Tipping the velvet. And her daughter is the main character Cassie from British Buffy rip off Hex. I recommend both.
I am terrified to watch this breakdown because this has been one of my favorite comfort movies since it came out pretty much. When I saw the notification for this I was like Kelly's friend in Cadet Kelly going "Noo! 😯" And you're Kelly going "YES.😖"

The fact that the dad plays mr. Darcy from pride and prejudice and the woman who the advisor gets him with temporarily also poayed in that movie as an unwanted rival to elizabeth...it gives me life.

She’s The Man is great! Channing Tatum totally falls in love with her when he thinks she’s a boy.

I thought that was a damn casket when they do that shot of the British Flag at like 6:46 in.

Glad I’m not the only one 🤣🤣🤣
Me too 🤣
Me too 😂 i was so confused
The idea of a montage of Jesus dying Easter eggs CRACKED ME UP. 🤣
The whole 'chocolately' thing is the same way for Taco Bell having 'meaty' tacos. Their meat (was? they might have gotten better) has so much soy filler it wasn't legally allowed to be called meat.

Omg yes!
The dislikes are from the people who sadly aren't ready to get help for their leather daddy Colin Firth childhood trauma.
This made me think of his younger self in the movie of Mama Mia
@@AM-kr4pv exactly!!!! like don’t put it in actual zombie related media lmao that is not what it’s abouttttt
Honestly 'Common People' would be way more fitting for movies like this. Just a quirky fun montage of them slumming it at the market with that in the background, subtly fading off the lyrics before any of them make it obvious what the song is actually saying.
I mean I didn’t even know the song let alone the meaning behind it
It’s like when movies throw on Fortunate Son over military scenes. It’s just so tone depth.
Wow so true
I kept thinking this exact thing while watching it back in the day. Princess Diaries but . . . worse

My birth mom was just an incredibly troubled woman who couldn't take care of a child (/had already had had multiple children taken away by social services)
There's no record of my birth father so no one knows lol
Colin Firth (and those leather pants) = the ONLY reason I watched that movie.
And his whole stiff but adorably flustered thing
I have such a nostalgic love for this one just because my dad took me to see it because it was about a father and daughter relationship.
My dad and I no longer have a relationship, so.....
RIP to the late and great Kelly Preston.
this movie always struck me as an alternate universe version of the princess diaries where the dad was still alive
My sister LOVED this movie, and I just discovered right now today that I have been quoting "loos free" for YEARS not knowing it was from this movie. Every time something is done my sister and I just announced 'loos free' we rarely use it in the correct context but my god my mind is blown over such a simple thing lol

“A rubber bullet to the back of the head”🤣🤣🤣 that’s a good band name.
When you edited the scene to make it look like Colin Firth punched his fiancée I screamed! 😂
"I have a capital R in my last name. My people have suffered." LMAO.
