Is 'a' initial crack length or crack length at a particular instant?

In fracture mechanics, "a" usually represents the crack length at a particular instance, or sometimes they call it "r" depending on the approach of it. On the other hand the initial crack length is "ao" (a with subscripted o).

How to obtain final crack length 'af' where the fracture occurs?
