The constitutional right to grant a child born on US soil was written how long ago? I was intended to grant slaves and children of slaves citizenship. The constitutional right to grant a child born on US soil was written how long ago? I was intended to grant slaves and children of slaves citizenship. Which was completely humane and the appropriate thing to do. They were brought here, lived here and this was their home. These people did not enter this country illegally they were brought here against their own will. This was the right thing to do at that time. It was not meant that if you walked or flew into America and deliver your child on American soil your child is a natural citizen.

In some countries like Singapore and Malaysia, even being born locally doesnt give you automatic citizenship . At least one parent must be citizen at time of child's birth.
