Man, January was wild. nanobii taking the first release of the year, in which I thought Stonebank would (Although it does not top 2NITE for me), Haywyre continuing to release on MCat when I thought he's going to take a long time to come back but in reality its soon, as well as nuphory (formerly Volant) returning after 2020?! I have no idea what to say about this since it's crazy 😅
Hands down, one of the Best Months on Monstercat of All Time :) I’ve been growing on Silk lately too and that label was also great this month. I’m scared though realizing that almost every godly artist was in this month, and that gets me thinking, how is February going to turn out? Sure, No Mana and Sofi started off the month with a Banger but can it really top January?
hey there, i'm a part of the one thing i'd note is hypertrance is a different thing from what virtual self does, which is neotrance. hypertrance (coined by nuphory and Aekae) - very open BPM range (135-180) - high energy in the drops - big 4x4 trance drums - tight mixing - strong emphasis on emotional impact (chord progs, "epic" sounds) - grand storytelling in the tracks - emotional, quieter (maybe piano driven) breakdowns - heavy emphasis on using authentic feeling sounds - capturing the optimstic futurism of y2k neotrance (coined by virtual self) - using various hardtrance and hardcore elements - reminiscent of beatmania / DDR type music - emphasis on lain sorta vibes - cyberia - dystopian future - bpm range from 140-180 - beats can be 4x4 or halftime, very trancey drums - speedcore added into tracks regularly still, great to see you liked the track!
Since you aren't familiar with Ryan Coss I'd recommend his track "over the moon.' Same kind of style as songs like overthinker and the illusion of time, and you'll definitely notice where he contributed in 4D afterwords.
Here’s my Ranking: - Fairlane & Silverstein - Take It Back - Dirtyphonics - Right Here, Right Now - Curbi - Kill The Lights (feat. Sarah de Warren) - Tisoki & Godlands - u want me 2.0 - RetroVision - Take Me Higher - nanobii - All I Want - nuphory - Leave The World Behind (feat. Luna Lenta) - Bad Computer & Ryan Coss - 4D - THIRST - BOUNCE - Blanke, Rival & KC - Heaven - Mr. Bill, Dirt Monkey & Ellika - Bones - Bishu - ENEMY (feat. Dabl) - Skybreak & Dani Demand - The Epic Octopus Song - Haywyre - Chromatically - Chime & Convexity - Liminal SILK: - Finding Mero - Need You - Angara & Gregory Esayan - Sun - ORACLE & Holochrome - Where Does The Light Go - Shingo Nakamura - Prism
New year, new music. To my surprise, January 2024 is better than January 2023. However, wasn't saved from having one or another terrible or mid track and the good news is there are more tracks with good quality, highlighting six as my absolute favorites. So here's my Monstercat Jaunary 2024 personal ranking. 1.- Bad Computer & Ryan Coss - 4D [10/10] We are just starting the year and there is already a BO2024 contender? Of course it does... Or at least that's what I think 'cause of how damn good this track is and more for the unexpected Ryan Coss' debut. There's a catchy piano performance and incredible off-drops fit like a glove. I won't say anything more. 2.- Haywyre - Chromatically [10/10] Haywyre did it again! The keyboard performance and classic vocaded vocals are still catchily goodness as always, also the funky vibe gives an even more special touch. 3.- Chime & Convexity - Liminal [9.5/10] This is even more consistent undoubtedly. Vapor Drums, creepy yet-nostalgic jazzy chords, sparkly drops and the crusty newcaster speech at the beginning... Everything is a total blast to the ears. 4.- Dirtyphonics - Right Here, Right Now [9.4/10] OHH GOD, WHAT A BANGER!!! The fusion between Disco and Bass House is fascinating and results in a smashing headbanger. It's a total bop, there's nothing more to highlight. 5.- Mr. Bill, Dirt Monkey & Ellika - Bones [9.3/10] I didn't expect to hear this kind of Progresive Halftime on Monstercat. It's such a jam. Here's a consistent development in DnB and Hip-Hop elements, kick-ups, snares and vocal performance as the track progresses. 6.- Blanke, Rival & KC - Heaven [9.0/10] Sure, Heaven it's much better and more interesting than 'Crashing Hard'. First heavy drop and second melodic drop are just great, both doesn't feel so forced or flat and KC's vocal performance helps balance this. 7.- nuphory - Leave the World Behind (feat. Luna Lenta) [8.0/10] I'm not a huge fan of Techno Dance tunes and this one impressed me a bit. Despite sounding very old school, production doesn't feel so boring and, instead, it's fresh and pleasant at the same time. 8.- Skybreak & Dani Demand - The Epic Octopus Song [7.8/10] I didn't necessarily love this collab, but I didn't dislike it either. There are many sprinkly elements that made this song fun and easy to enjoy. However, doesn't have that Skybreak's unique spark touch as in their latest releases, despite having Dani Demand's support. I thank both artists for bringing an interesting concept to the label and I know they can do much more. 9.- Tisoki & Godlands - u want me 2.0 [7.5/10] Aren't my go-to-go Trap songs, although ISOxo-like production sounds cool. The only drawback are the vocal chops, 'cause sounds more annoying here than in the original track. From there on out, the rest is alright. 10.- Curbi - Kill The Lights (feat. Sarah de Warren) [7.0/10] This is Curbi's first song I enjoy without any complaints. It's not perfect, although Sarah de Warren's vocal performance and House production sounds nice together. 11.- Fairlane & Silverstein - Take It Back [6.5/10] What Fairlane did with Silverstein isn't so bad, but I'm not convinced by the result they gave either. Melodic drops sounds nicely okey, although unfortunately them sin from the classic cliché of a "sentimental song". Deathstep midsection is the part that disappointed me the most, because I am not a fan of melodies that exceed the limit of aggressiveness. In conclusion, it's an easy track to digest, but disappointing in terms of quality. 12.- Bishu - ENEMY (feat. dabl) [6.3/10] The production and vocal performance aren't the best, although I find it a bit enjoyable. I hope for more musical variety on his next album and not only Electropop songs. 13.- nanobii - All I Want [6.0/10] I never connected very well with nanobii's music and this one is no exception. It's acceptable, but basically sounds like any basic Techno/Trance song I haven't heard anywhere else. 14.- RetroVision - Take Me Higher [5.0/10] Unfortunately, this is a RetroVision's downgrade. Bass House production it's okey, but doesn't convince me and those vocal chops become annoying. 15.- THIRST - BOUNCE [2.0/10] After a surprisingly good debut and two consistent collabs, THIRST released that average Phonk tune I didn't end up liking. They're failed this time.
15. OG 100% better 14. Techno 13. How can you put a phonk into 5 💀 12. Disappointing 11. Crazy! 10. Unique 9. Well that sucks... 8. I see Slippy (oops Sippy) somewhere 7. Absolutely unique step 6. B A N G E R 5. Classic 4. Guilty pleasure 3. Absolute jam 2. B - A - N - G - E - R 1. B + A + N + G + E + R
I liked this month, and I actually listened to a lot of the songs 15: I didn't care about this when it dropped (5/10) 14: This is irritating but not at the same time: (6/10) 13: The worst THIRST song on Monstercat, I couldn't get into this one (5/10) 12: I didn't really like Retro's 2023 songs, and this is currently my 2nd most played song so (10/10) 11: I think I've discovered my new favorite genre, I love hypertrance (10/10) 10: This was one of the few songs I skipped listening to this month because I don't care about it (4/10) 9: This was the second song I skipped this month (4.5/10) 8: I don't know how to feel about this (?/10) 7: Having Convexity on the label is great, and this song is trippy in a good way (9/10) 6: This was the third song I skipped this month (5/10) 5: This went completely over my head (?/10) 4: This was the fourth song I skipped this month (6/10) 3: I want Haywyre to make more songs like this, I'm digging his new style (10/10) 2: Probably my favorite Dirtyphonics song now (10/10) 1: I forgot that this came out in January, but it's fantastic (this month has felt long to me) (10/10) Overall, January had some heavy hitters and some that I didn't care to listen to. Leave The World Behind might be my new favorite song too.
15. Wow I’m surprised by how low this is… I loved it tbh 14. This was pretty mid. It’s a shame 13. Run time kills the vibe. It’s pretty good otherwise 12. Damn I thought this one was amazing too. This is probably my favorite of his so far 11. Really cool to have volant back! Blasting this one is such a vibe. 10. Meh I thought this one was okay. Not bad but not amazing 9. Didn’t love the heavy drop but the melodic ones were great. 8. I only listened to it once but it was good. The ending was the best part 7. At first I despised it but I gave it a second chance and it’s really not that bad. There’s some really good parts when the kicks come in but that’s about it 6. Pretty good. I like this collab and everyone did good 5. God this has been my favorite release in a while. It’s just perfect, 10/10. I hope his LP is just as solid 4. Instinct only had three releases but they were all great 3. It’s a vibe but I was still a little disappointed I guess. 2. Disappointed again but it was still solid, just a little repetitive but it still slaps. 1. I mean it was good. Similar to “electric” where I left a little to be desired but the “take me to a 4th dimension” vocal in the drop is really my favorite part
I can’t take you want me 2.0 seriously bc it quite literally sounds like they stole ISOxos whole flow. I know music can be very similar but I mean just listen to his latest album and this sounds identical
My opinion: 15. Pretty good 7.5/10 14. Decent 6/10 13. Reminds me dxrk - rave but that one is better 6.75/10 12. Decent 6/10 11. Amazing 9/10 10. Pretty good 7.5/10 9. Really good 8/10 8. 🐙 8.8/10 7. Incredible (and metal pipe slaps) 9.5/10 6. Good 7/10 5. I still prefer early 2021 bishu 7.2/10 4. Very good 7.75/10 3. JAM 9.75/10 2. Pretty good 7.5/10 1. Amazing 9/10 Silk releases (I listen to them now): Finding Mero - Need You & Signal (both 7/10) Angara & Gregory Esayan - Sun (8.5/10) Oracle & Holochrome - Where does the light go (7.5/10) Shingo Nakamura - Prism (7.2/10)
Ok why does January always slap though 🤔 It's like the opposite of the January box office lol
Why do your videos always slap tho 🤔
Mr. Bill actually had 2 Monstercat songs before Bones: Freedom Bill & Billy on Mushrooms.
Volant is back!!!
Man, January was wild.

I have no idea what to say about this since it's crazy 😅
Imo, this month might just be one of the best months we've had since the 2020s
I'm hoping this isn't a case where the rest of the months suck because this month was genuinely so good!
I've been listening to 4D on repeat for the whole month, everyday, and Im not getting tired of it, it's unbelievable
Goated takes for the most part. I agree with your number one as well!!
Hands down, one of the Best Months on Monstercat of All Time :) I’ve been growing on Silk lately too and that label was also great this month. hey there, i'm a part of the
one thing i'd note is hypertrance is a different thing from what virtual self does, which is neotrance.
hypertrance (coined by nuphory and Aekae)
- very open BPM range (135-180)
- high energy in the drops
- big 4x4 trance drums
- tight mixing
- strong emphasis on emotional impact (chord progs, "epic" sounds)
- grand storytelling in the tracks
- emotional, quieter (maybe piano driven) breakdowns
- heavy emphasis on using authentic feeling sounds
- capturing the optimstic futurism of y2k
neotrance (coined by virtual self)
- using various hardtrance and hardcore elements
- reminiscent of beatmania / DDR type music
- emphasis on lain sorta vibes
- cyberia
- dystopian future
- bpm range from 140-180
- beats can be 4x4 or halftime, very trancey drums
- speedcore added into tracks regularly
still, great to see you liked the track!

SILK:
- Finding Mero - Need You
- Angara & Gregory Esayan - Sun

Most of these ratings were really predictable, but for a reason. I think this month was really solid with the exception of some disappointments.
