Why conductors always need to go away to somewhere right after finishing a piece and then come back just 50 seconds later? It's not like they are having a bathroom break - too short a time, plus, musicians also need to go to the bathroom, but they all can hold it, so can conductor. Perhaps, unlike in case with musicians, it has to do with standing for too long. If so, then conductors most likely use this time to just sit for a while, but why can't they do that in front of the audience? After all, all musicians do.

It's a tradition. In fact, if you do it for three times with a solist, he or she will give you an encore ;)

@@Sam-nb1rm Do you mean going away and coming back three times?

@@turquisestones yes 👍 usually if this happens 3 times in, say, a piano concert, the pianist will perform an encore. This has happened most of the time I go to a concert. I think it's a tradition.
Sometimes if the performance is superb, the going back and forth thing can last for 3-5 mins, but the atmosphere is hyped and everyone is happy. I guess that's a cultural thing!
