- Hey-yo, Tapeheads! Here’s a groovy little video explaining the process on how to easily and safely assemble / disassemble a VHS tape for various repairs, courtesy of fellow Videovore Tyler Bell!
You can check out more of his rewind-radical work on Instagram @OOPVideo! ( / oopvideo )
This technique will also work for spool swaps if you’d like to turn your classic black videocassettes into wonderfully colorful VHS slabs! Don’t know about that? We got you! Check out this link below from Lunchmeat in association with Warlock Video!

I am 23 years old, and grew up with vhs tapes. Recently bought a vcr and a lot of my favorite movies on tape. This is a lifesaver as another vcr basically almost destroyed one of them.
Thank you so much. This allowed me to save my broken copy of Timecop!
Thanks for the refresher! I haven't been inside a tape in over 30 years. Fixed it. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I still collect vhs and I have a few that need slight repairs. I couldn’t believe this video existed, thanks again!
I unwound a VHS tape when I was 6 years old and wound it back around and it played perfectly.
Thanks so much!! I had a vcr eat one of our family tapes and this helped me save it! I miss analog technology like this - it's so cool seeing all the mechanical pieces work together to make a tape play!
Cyclones hoodie and Hy-Vee furniture polish. You've gone FULL IOWA!
I'm teasing. Thank you for making this video. I've used your past videos as a guide for cleaning a load of the moldy and damaged VHS tapes I've bought recently. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work.
This is our friend Tyler Bell, and he's from there! Too true! You're so welcome, Paul! Keep feedin' that VCR!
Paul Schlotterbeck He shows how to clean moldy tapes?! I shall go look right now! 🙏
One of our VHS players chewed the start of our "Groundhog Day" video. I spliced it but opened the case bottom-wise instead of top-wise and couldn't figure out how to wind the tape back onto the posts. With your help, I think I can fix it finally! Thanks!
I did it! It works! 🙂
Thank you sir got a coke nail aye but srsly thbk you. One of the best videos about this topic
Hey bro. Thanks for this video. I used to fix a lot of tapes back in the day but I can never remember how to put things back together. Just fixed one today and your video helped.
Thanks so much man! I had a video8 tape that wouldn't play and I was trying to open it so I could put it in a different body, but I didn't want to destroy it so this was helpful. Same design, just different size
you just helped me save a 25 year old tape. i've never opened up a tape before. awesome

I wanted to check if there was a white post on the left side since I thought I had lost one but your terrific video showed that there wasn't. Great stuff and I can tell you've opened up alot of tapes in your time!
Same here, I've not opened a tape in years and when the white roller fell out I thought omg where does that go, i can't remember and your video showed me, taa,
Greetings from Lincoln, Nebraska! Huge collection myself!
Thank you. I followed your instructions and it worked !!
I could smell that lemon Pledge!
You are an absolute legend
Thanks! You helped me fix a broken tape.
Since my DVD recorder blew up, I've been recording some documentaries and shows on my VCRs again. Of course, stores don't sell blank VHS tapes anymore and the ones I have either have my home videos on them, or the film in them is too bad to use. So, I took the film out of a pre-recorded VHS(I have the movie that was on it on DVD) and put it in the shell of one of the old blank ones whose film was too degraded, because it still had the recording tab on it. It worked and I recorded my documentary.
You can also just cover the recording tab hole with scotch tape and the VCR will record on it.
Hi! If you are still recording on VHS, I have a bunch of blanks you could have. Free!
Thank you very much for this video. Really helpful!!!
Thank you! We can watch Viva Villa tonight! 🙏
"Grow a little coke nail." 🤣
Thanks so much for posting this video. Just like your tape was shipped in a thin bubble mailer so was mine & the tape arrived damaged. I have to do a case swap.
Thanks! Helped a lot to put a tape back together. Unfortunately, I didn't flip the cartridge after removing the screws.
Same. Tape saver! Thank you!
Thanks for this Video-Nice one
My tape has two round red plastic parts covering two of the screws so I can’t open it. Going to see if there are still service guys out there repairing these for people.
Thanks! Is this a temporary fix, or Can I then play the tape multiple times without it breaking the tape, or my player
Hey man, I have some white looking mold spots on the reel. It’s On the side of the reel you can see it through a clear window in this VHS tape that many don’t have. It’s on the rolled up part of the real it looks like I might be able to clean the side of it or something. I don’t know if you dealt with this before or have any videos on some thing like that how to clean it properly if you can? Thank you !
I've had a few with this white mold in and my advice is to just throw the tapes away. They are a health hazard if it's covered in this mold.
Really helped👍
Thank you!
I tried to fix some of my VHS tapes but every time I put them in my VCR, it ejects itself. Does anyone know why?
Can you do a vcr repair? I have one that eats the tapes.
thanks a lot!
What if the tape falls off the other side? Is it supposed to be attached or do you simply just wind it back up tightly?
The reel lock has little springs that came off, was trying to figure out how they're set
how much would you charge me to put my tape back together.I rewound it and the tape snapped at the beginning?
thank you!!
Thanks! :D
Lighter Fluid would be better as it evaporates and isn’t sticky.
Why does mine have a slim little metal pole thing and where does that go? Pls help
i have VHS tape that split. Can you tell me what kind of material I need to splice it? I Googled "vhs tape splice kit" and nothing comes up.
If you're talking about the actual tape splitting, you can use a piece of scotch tape. It'll do the trick.
@@LunchmeatVHS Great, so I don't need a heavy tape, like a clear packing tape? Also, I watched another video, and they said you need to put the tape on one particular side --- the inside, as I recall. Is that critical? It seems of you put it on both sides it will be more likely to stay together. But I imagine that could damage the head that reads the tape.
@@HomeAtLast501 Just use scotch tape. It's approximately the right size and works well. Yes, inside is best, because the VCR presses the outside of the tape against the head, and you don't want the scotch tape pressing against the head if you can help it, for a couple different reasons. Hope this helps!
@@LunchmeatVHS Yes, very much so. Thank you very much.
I used sellotape and put a piece on each side of tape, just tried it and it played perfectly, film doesn't start till 6 minutes in anyway after adverts and previews also rewound OK without it snapping like the original glue did
why didn't you just swap out the flap if it had an inside sticker?
My VHS Tape does not have metal rods in it
so hard When that springy thing disconnects
the video is not good quality and I can't see it
k puts the spring on the shutter there
