This drum cover is really impressive for me as a drummer to watch, the strange Rhythm and beat changes in flies make it an extremely awkward song to play but you handled it perfectly. I can definitely see the Zach hill influence too. Great job man!
As a fellow drummer, Flies is one of my favorite DG songs to play, along with Full Moon, Blood Creepin', Lost Boys, Fuck Me Out, etc. Flies feels almost like a yin-yang with how different the two parts are.

i usually play slower stuff to warm up and once im getting warmer, i play the fastest songs i know then focus on the song/s that i want to record. i dont really think about a technique. i just try being precise and staying on time
