Excellent video. Takes patience to build an e-drum such as this one, but the results are worth the effort. I would add a few items to this build 1- A switch for the head pizeo, so it can be used for Roland or Alesis which are wired reverse from each other. 2- A Potentiometer for both Piezo's so they can be adjusted (trimmed) to work with various drum modules 3- a lower plate used to mount the Potentiomenters, Switch and Jack These could add kaizen to your assembly
I like the immediate disposal of aluminum you included. It is very common and its dangers are frequently overlooked. @Glauber de Souza O sensor é o mais simples, qualquer loja de componentes eletrônicos vai ter, e os fios tbm, mas tem soldado na internet já. Eu utilizei uma caixa 14×5 como base, pra pele eu usei uma muda da marca custom, tem baratinha no mercado livre, a base de metal eu mandei fazer em uma loja de retalhos de metal, basicamente medi o diâmetro interno do casco e tirei uns 3 milímetros. O cone eu comprei um da própria Roland de reposição, tem no mercado livre tbm, mas da pra comprar uma espuma densa como D45 pra cima e cortar um cone, a parte que fica de baixo do cone, eu comprei eva em metro, daqueles mais grossos, cortei em pedaços quadrados e colei usando cola de sapateiro, na mesma loja de borrachas que comprei o eva, eu comprei uma borracha que cobre quinas, pra cobrir o aro de metal, pra acoplar a base de metal no casco eu comprei cantoneiras L com dois furos de cada lado e pedi pra um cara de ferramentaria conectar os furos cortando, deixando assim ajustável, da pra encontrar essas cantoneiras em lojas para casa e ferramentas.

Much better than the cheap triggers I made from Remo practice pads and the one I made from a mesh practice pad with the foam come. This is very professional and, if I ever do another kit, I'll definitely be replicating THIS setup. Thanks.
Honestly this is nice but a built overkill. I built a trigger using a shelf bracket and 2 small slotted brackets that is solid as a rock. Bought a prewired Pintech piezo with foam and 1/4 jack from amazon for $18. Works very well and is quieter and waaay easier than this project. Undoubtedly quieter since it has mesh heads on both ends.
The aluminum disc is an unnecessary expense. You can use alumimum U Channel. I converted 4 piece ludwig set into an 8 piece electronic kit by cutting the shells in half. I use it with a Roland TD-12 and TD-8 and it works perfectly. If you have two zones like a head piezo and a rim piezo the head piezo needs to float on some foam, I mounted the piezo to a small square aluminum plate, glued the cone to that. That was mounted with two vibration dampening stand-offs to the U channel. No problems.

Hello, I saw a lot of your videos and started making my DIY electronic drums, I bought shielded Jack connectors because they fit perfectly into the hole in the shell, the fit worked, however, the two stereo outputs were the same with head sound, without rim, after After trying many different things I saw that other simple plastic connectors did not present the problem. Could I use resistors in the shielded Jack connectors to solve the problem? These connectors were very expensive and fit perfectly, I would like to make it work
Hello, Followed your recipe and made a dual zone snare drum. The response of the center piezo is MUCH weaker than the one on the rim. I tried swaping the piezo and event inverted the wiring, same result. I also tried the connect it to the tom input with same result. The "stock" pads work normally. I'm using an Alesis Surge module. Any idea where my problem is ? Thanks. By the way, lve your videos !

Again, amazing series, but what exactly is the decoupler made out of, and what it its purpose here? I see many DYI videos just place the piezo on some raised metal with foam.
Matthew Attard Thank you! The decoupler is made out of foam and used as vibration damping system. The head trigger would react when hitting the rim if there would not be a damping system.
Why you use different size piezzo for head and rim??Also why you set the foam cone exactly to the center of the drum and not aside cause the center is the most hitting area and time to time the foam will be destructed??It has some relation to the position sensing problem??

i have a few Pintech and S&S Drums (Electronic Drums) ,in the S&S you have Big pans, but i notice when using these pans even with self reject setting (because of MizTriggers, it did not sound as good till i removed the pan and put a cone inside instead aprox 1.5 mm above the Drum shell and it sounded much better.using mesh heads. has anyone else ever ran into the same issue?

Rubén Carrillo Ureña It would work, but wood is not as good for transferring the vibration. Ideal it would be a 4mm aluminium disc. But it does not matter if it is for cheaper modules.
Anyone know if multiple triggers can be chained to one practice pad? I put a trigger under a pad but it only reacts when it's struck directly on top of the transducer. As you move away from the piezo, it gets lighter and ligher till nothing. I'm thinking maybe using 3 or 4 on the same pad and wire them together. Maybe that won't work.

+Tim Lobb Durm-tec wires their snares exactly like the one in this video. There is no separate trigger for side stick and rim shot. The rim trigger is responsible for these 2 signals. It sends different wave signals to the module and the module can interpret if it is a side stick hit or a rim shot.

As you won't have positional sensing on a cajon, you might place them near the frame to not hit them directly. What module will you use? Can these be used with an actual drum head? I am wondering because I don't want to use them with a drum brain, I just want to use them to trigger a noise gate in a live drum situation.

Your English is fine, I can understand everything:) I am not experienced with Alesis modules. I would build the dual pad and try what happens without resistor. And if it does not work, buy a resistor. They cost only cents. Check the colour code of the Alesis resistor and buy one with the same resistance. I think the resistor is to "decouple head and rim". It is just a way of how Alesis modules recognize the difference between head and rim.
Vdrum Tips Are you still thinking about producing the torque or Flexi system? Is it possible to release the specs, I and I'm sure many others would be willing to pay for the specs.
cast390 according to Roland pads, the head piezo has to be smaller. you can read this article about piezos for e-drums to understand the details: www.v-drumtips.com/piezos/
Regular heads will work aswell. Although many people use e-drums like this because they can't use acoustic drums due to the sound. And a regular mylar drumhead will still produce sound even if the shell is 1" deep and you have no resonant head. Mesh heads on the other hand are made out of a type of fabric that (depending on the manufacturer) doesn't have a very high thread-count so they are more or less see through to the air can pass through, thus making less air inside the drum shell move when the head is struck and that way the shell doesn't vibrate much either. And fabric as you probably know, doesn't really resonate much either so much of the acoustic noise is eliminated so that you can play in your apartment or such at any time without disturbing anybody :)
Cool, mesh heads are really a matter of taste. I like the quietness of the remo heads, but think they are too bouncy. Have you ever tried drum-tec or Jobeky mesh heads?
Tin Kings Hi, das ist nur ein Design. Du kannst auch andere Materialien verwenden. Wichtigste dass das Material nicht schwingt. Jobeky drums verwendet so eine Pressspanpappe. Diese Kreisausschnitte sind halt nicht gerade leise.
Hello there! Got a problem - Rim Piezo does not work. Soldered everything well, like it is supposed to be. The module is Roland TD4 - can the problem be in module? With Roland pads everything worked well, now even if I solder single piezo for rim according to your diagram it does not work. Thanks in advance!

I do recommend the R-drums piezos. The diameter alone does not matter, the piezos have to be measured for polarity and have the right amount of voltage and so on. I would never use stock piezos.

are you talking about a 3 zone pad? One with both cross stick and rim shot? No, it is not possible with this setup. Plus, the roland modules does not have a 3 zone feature.

I made a trigger similar to this, but because I'm using mylar heads, I didn't use a cone, and used a design similar to Alesis DM10. When I first hooked up the two piezos the head and rim worked fine, but after fiddling with it and replacing the piezos, I couldn't get the head or rim to trigger. Finally, I turned the rim gain down to 1 and the head triggered fine. I turned the head gain to 1 and rim gain back up and the rim triggered fine, but with the gain turned up on both they don't work. Do you think since the head piezo is acting like a rim piezo in the sense that the carrier plate is picking up vibrations instead of force being applied to the ceramic part like the cone system, that maybe they are cancelling each other out or something? I'll have to fiddle around with the wiring tomorrow, but it seems strange, because I swear I wired them up the same way I did the first two piezos I installed and the first two worked fine, together, so I'm wondering if the issue is being caused by the fact that the polarity may be different on one or both of the piezos from the first two that I used, so I need to wire them differently.
Here's some more info: If the head and rim gain are both turned up past 1 then neither piezo will really work, just sporadically will it register a hit, once every ten strikes or so. But if I turn the rim gain to 1 and leave head gain up, the head piezo works perfectly fine. If I turn the head piezo gain to 1 and rim gain up then the rim works perfectly fine. But when both head and rim gain are turned up past 1 neither one will consistently work. If I enable "invert polarity" option on my drum module then both piezos start to work but they trigger the same sound. If wired like this: edrum.for.free.fr/static/pictures/MBrolandwiring.gif then with "invert polarity" enabled both the head piezo and rim piezo trigger the head sound. Is it possible that two piezos could be incompatible with each other? I read that the polarity on piezos is random and can be different from piezo to piezo. I'm using the same brand of piezos as the first two I installed, which worked together perfectly fine. They are GoEdrum piezos which are made for e-drums.
Maybe I figured it out. When it was working there was about a 2.5" space between the metal disc the rim piezo is on and the head trigger plate, but I reduced that to 1.5", which the foam I want to use is very expensive if I have to buy one 3" thick and cut it to 2.5". But with only 1.5" between the head piezo which is in the middle of the head trigger plate and the rim piezo on the bottom plate, I'm thinking they are interfering with each other. What do you think? This sucks if I have to move back to 2.5". This is such a nice simple, clean design the way I have it. I will have to turn the brackets upside down like you did then reduce the size of the bottom plate to accommodate the thickness of the brackets, plus the foam is so expensive, too expensive.

Thanks, it is not difficult. The only 2 important things are drilling the holes accurately and measuring the disc. The rest is simple.

ed salisch Hi, for a hybrid drum it would be better to use a trigger you can attach to the rim. It would effect the sound otherwise.

if you do that you might as well just use 2 wooden bars and attach the rim piezo to the side of the shell, i think.

+Tim Lobb Durm-tec wires their snares exactly like the one in this video. There is no separate trigger for side stick and rim shot. The rim trigger is responsible for these 2 signals. It sends different wave signals to the module and the module can interpret if it is a side stick hit or a rim shot.

I think so, since Roland pads work as well with 2 box. But I cannot ensure you.

Hi , would it be ok to use 6mm thick MDF circles instead of the 2mm thick aluminium E-Drum Conversions as shown in Part 3 ?. Or will this material not be as responsive for rim triggering ? . Thanks . Ken.
Yes, I guess it would even be better, since MDF does not vibrate that strong.

Yes, it depends on the hardware and the shell. It does not have to be built like this, just giving an idea.

no, you need something to covert the trigger signal. For a cajon I would use a Roland TM-2.
Some Roland modules have cajon sounds and the TM-2 samples sounds. Check if you can find a used one.

I am wondering because I don't want to use them with a drum brain, I just want to use them to trigger a noise gate in a live drum situation.

No, you will destroy the cone if you hit it with a beater. There is a video about making a kick drum, check this one and apply it to a small shell.

Your English is fine, I can understand everything:) I am not experienced with Alesis modules. I would build the dual pad and try what happens without resistor. And if it does not work, buy a resistor. They cost only cents. Check the colour code of the Alesis resistor and buy one with the same resistance. I think the resistor is to "decouple head and rim". It is just a way of how Alesis modules recognize the difference between head and rim.
Compared to say a top of the line roland pad or the R Drums package how does it perform?

Carbon It triggers as good as a Roland pad. The torque trigger is better, as it is quieter and the rim piezo is in the centre.

Hi, it doesn"t have to be a roland head, but I would go for at least a dual ply head, otherwise you'll have too much rebound.
Regular heads will work aswell. Although many people use e-drums like this because they can't use acoustic drums due to the sound. And a regular mylar drumhead will still produce sound even if the shell is 1" deep and you have no resonant head. Mesh heads on the other hand are made out of a type of fabric that (depending on the manufacturer) doesn't have a very high thread-count so they are more or less see through to the air can pass through, thus making less air inside the drum shell move when the head is struck and that way the shell doesn't vibrate much either. And fabric as you probably know, doesn't really resonate much either so much of the acoustic noise is eliminated so that you can play in your apartment or such at any time without disturbing anybody :)
Cool, mesh heads are really a matter of taste. I like the quietness of the remo heads, but think they are too bouncy. Have you ever tried drum-tec or Jobeky mesh heads?

Tin Kings Hi, das ist nur ein Design. Du kannst auch andere Materialien verwenden. Wichtigste dass das Material nicht schwingt. Jobeky drums verwendet so eine Pressspanpappe. Diese Kreisausschnitte sind halt nicht gerade leise.

It is very accurate, through to the triggers and the cone. It is as good as the high end Roland pads (PD-128)
And does ist keep working as well as in the video also if I use a simple alluminium bar or the plate is necessary?

Hello there! Got a problem - Rim Piezo does not work. Soldered everything well, like it is supposed to be. The module is Roland TD4 - can the problem be in module? With Roland pads everything worked well, now even if I solder single piezo for rim according to your diagram it does not work.

I do recommend the R-drums piezos. The diameter alone does not matter, the piezos have to be measured for polarity and have the right amount of voltage and so on. I would never use stock piezos.

No, it is not possible with this setup. Plus, the roland modules does not have a 3 zone feature.

The decoupler has to be as close to Roland pads to get the perfect side stick triggering. This is why I always refer to the R-Drums Decoupler.
no what im saying is if i change the rim sound manualy i get the side stick but it either one or the other i cant make it have two different sounds on the rim all the time

I made a trigger similar to this, but because I'm using mylar heads, I didn't use a cone, and used a design similar to Alesis DM10. You can see here what I'm talking about: ruclips.net/video/S3OiONBIiKk/видео.html&t=204 I read on your site about polarity, and I have a question since I encountered a strange issue.
When I first hooked up the two piezos the head and rim worked fine, but after fiddling with it and replacing the piezos, I couldn't get the head or rim to trigger. Finally, I turned the rim gain down to 1 and the head triggered fine. I turned the head gain to 1 and rim gain back up and the rim triggered fine, but with the gain turned up on both they don't work.
Do you think since the head piezo is acting like a rim piezo in the sense that the carrier plate is picking up vibrations instead of force being applied to the ceramic part like the cone system, that maybe they are cancelling each other out or something? I'll have to fiddle around with the wiring tomorrow, but it seems strange, because I swear I wired them up the same way I did the first two piezos I installed and the first two worked fine, together, so I'm wondering if the issue is being caused by the fact that the polarity may be different on one or both of the piezos from the first two that I used, so I need to wire them differently.
Here's some more info:
If the head and rim gain are both turned up past 1 then neither piezo will really work, just sporadically will it register a hit, once every ten strikes or so.
But if I turn the rim gain to 1 and leave head gain up, the head piezo works perfectly fine. If I turn the head piezo gain to 1 and rim gain up then the rim works perfectly fine. But when both head and rim gain are turned up past 1 neither one will consistently work.
If I enable "invert polarity" option on my drum module then both piezos start to work but they trigger the same sound. If wired like this: edrum.for.free.fr/static/pictures/MBrolandwiring.gif then with "invert polarity" enabled both the head piezo and rim piezo trigger the head sound. If wired like this: www.v-drumtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Wiring-diagram-for-Roland.pdf with "invert polarity" enabled then both piezos trigger the rim sound.
Is it possible that two piezos could be incompatible with each other? I read that the polarity on piezos is random and can be different from piezo to piezo. I'm using the same brand of piezos as the first two I installed, which worked together perfectly fine. They are GoEdrum piezos which are made for e-drums.
Maybe I figured it out. When it was working there was about a 2.5" space between the metal disc the rim piezo is on and the head trigger plate, but I reduced that to 1.5", which the foam I want to use is very expensive if I have to buy one 3" thick and cut it to 2.5". But with only 1.5" between the head piezo which is in the middle of the head trigger plate and the rim piezo on the bottom plate, I'm thinking they are interfering with each other. What do you think? This sucks if I have to move back to 2.5". This is such a nice simple, clean design the way I have it. I will have to turn the brackets upside down like you did then reduce the size of the bottom plate to accommodate the thickness of the brackets, plus the foam is so expensive, too expensive.
