A friend turned me on to Ry in the late 1970's when he brought over Cooder's "Bop Til' You Drop" album and it just amazed me. Been following Ry ever since.
I agree.this is a great version!! Live in Santa Cruz with the Mula Bula band is a close second though especially with the long slide solo and Van Dyke filling in the keyboard section!! Good 'Ol Ry!!!!
Superb on every level. I feel bad for the kids today. There aren't any new artists capable of this type of live performance. Kids today don't know what real live music is!
+bill glueck Man of man you hit the nail right on the head... No one and I mean No on can do it like this man and his band live.. Kids today? Damn man they haven't a clue.
Wow! I had a Phantom Mandoguitar a few years ago! Amazing little instrument if you can keep the dam things tuned, let alone intonated! Killer killer tones! And Lindley has more weird instruments than the Smithsonian!
Lindley is playing a Vox (Bill) Wyman bass that has been modified to have 8 strings. It looks like a whole new neck. 30 1/2 inch scale. He is super awesome.

That's that Holy Spirit that you don't believe in reaching out to you. Did you know that author Lew Wallace was also an atheist until he began reading the Bible for references n writing Ben Hur, and became born again. I don't want to be preachy, but I couldn't pass on the opportunity to say something. Forgive me if I seem out of line, Peace
Catweasel, yeah, me too, lifelong atheist here. And yet I have to acknowledge the enormous influence that black churches and gospel/ spirituals have had on classic soul and R&B music. Also, in my own small New England community, the churches do a stellar job of feeding the hungry and helping the homeless, which is more in line with what Jesus purportedly preached than the behavior of some pastors and mega-churches elsewhere, who preach "prosperity gospel" and blame the poor simply for being poor. My two main issues with organized religion are when it is used as a right-wing organizing tool, a societal wedge really, to be exploited for political gain; and when people exhibit "magical" thinking, ie "Jesus and my church will protect me from the coronavirus", instead of trusting doctors and scientists.
Date and location of performance, please? btw, looks like Ry had been hanging around David too long about then, as he started playing funky stringed instruments too. What is that - a soprano 12-string guitar?
Witnessing a master class in musicianship. May David Rest in Peace.
Amen! Thank you Ry and David for sharing your great gifts with us.
The world became so wonderfully clear and remains in my heart! Thank you, Mr. Ry Cooder and Mr. David Lindley.

one of my fave Ry Cooder song's this is a fantastic version.
We all need to make that call! Thanks for the reminder Ryland!
Beautiful. So simple and yet so interesting.
When I hear this, my mind is blown off, but my heart starts singing all day long. Thanx for sharing.
We had the absolute pleasure of seeing ry in Belfast a few years ago.
Tne best, the pinnacle. I've heard Jesus on the Mainline done dozens of ways, many by Ry, but nothing touches this... _replay_

5 people disliked this song/version(?) enough to listen to it & mash the button. I really don't see how a music lover would not "like" it?
Ever been an avid music fan all your life and discover new stuff? Got me some Ry to listen to...
tHANK yOU ! user,,,, as i stumbled upon this wonderful video, 10 min into a SunDay, i'm doin Church EARLY !! xoxo
Ry Cooder playing the slide. That’s as pure as it gets. Straight blues.
Ry Cooder's voice is awesome throughout this song
Stephen, we saw Ry play a couple years ago and his voice *still* sounds great! Not to mention his playing......!
What a performance, those voices touch me deep inside.
Superb on every level. I feel bad for the kids today. There aren't any new artists capable of this type of live performance. Kids today don't know what real live music is!

Careful now - every time you say "kids these days" a memory of youth dies, and you hear the clock in the Croc a ticking.
Ry Cooder is a helluva singer man. RIP David Lindley
This was performed at the 1994 New Orleans Jazzfest at what is now called the Gentilly Stage, but was the Ray Ban stage. This was a GREAT SET!!!
Just flat-out excellent, pure and unadulterated music!
I love It when Giants pay respect to One other.. and do things together!!! Thanks!!

Wow! I had a Phantom Mandoguitar a few years ago! Amazing little instrument if you can keep the dam things tuned, let alone intonated! Killer killer tones! And Lindley has more weird instruments than the Smithsonian!
Lindley's looks like and electric bouzouki (sp?). There is a version of him doing "Minglewood" on a bouzouki (?) on RUclips which is killer.
He appears to be playing it with only 6 strings, as well.
Lindley is playing a Vox (Bill) Wyman bass that has been modified to have 8 strings. It looks like a whole new neck. 30 1/2 inch scale. He is super awesome.
A Mandocello. One of the main instruments used by Steve Kinghtley of "Show Of Hands"
Just like to thank Ryland's Ma and Pa for creating him.
I second that emotion!
Love the music that Ry COODER plays 🎵🙏🏽✌🏼️

Hard not to love a bass voice as solid as that one dude's...

What is that thing Ry is playing? Sounds amazing! (Most things do in his hands!)
I believe it's a Vox Mando-guitar.
The line ain't never busy.
Date and location of performance, please? btw, looks like Ry had been hanging around David too long about then, as he started playing funky stringed instruments too. What is that - a soprano 12-string guitar?
