    I can literally relate to the Fresh Prince scene where he asks why his father doesn’t want him. I grew up with a dad who didn’t want me. He always had time and would do things with my two older brothers but he pretended I didn’t exist.
    He would tell everyone that I wasn’t his kid. He has never lived more than 5 minutes away from me in my whole life, but I can count on my two hands the times I’ve seen him in the 36 years I’ve been alive.
    I’m not sad about it anymore. I’m done wishing he cared. I’m stronger and better off without him.

      One thing that confused me about that episode is that if Fisher has already told Jackie whenever he gets angry then she just has to walk away. Why did she continue? I'm not saying that she deserved it for not listening, because what your gender is, nobody deserves being in a domestic abusive relationship. Yes, I've tried looking it up, but all I've gotten was mostly websites about "Why do women get mad for no reason", "Why men walks away from relationships," etc...

      @@christinalittleton2242 ive never been in that situation but i feel like people are probably just too attached. when they get told to just walk away they might feel bad for leaving or feel like they have to be there for someone who they would be so much better without. sucks that men and women are both so vulnerable to it but when you feel you kove someone i imagine it must be hard to distance yourself, especially if you depend on them for some other reason (like if the abuser is also the parent of the victim's child or if they depend on them financially due to having previously been in a bad situation) btw i hope that makes sense, its difficult to phrase.

      @Ceares 5 лет назад +13

      @@christinalittleton2242 I'm assuming you mean why did she not walk away when he got angry to avoid being beaten? Several answers I think. One, just in general, abusers get angry over everything and nothing so basically what might start as a harmless situation can quickly pivot into one where they are angry and the person might not have had time to realize the danger.
      Two, Jackie's personality was such that she was the type to push back, argue etc... now over time he probably would have abused and traumatized that out of her but even though she logically knew she shouldn't push, she couldn't help it. It's the way some people are mouthy and sarcastic even when they know it's going to get them in trouble. People get killed over situations where they should have just walked away instead of arguing or fighting but for a lot people, their natural reaction is to push back.
      Three, and perhaps most importantly. The cake is a lie. In other words, he would have abused her no matter what she did, so it doesn't matter really why she didn't try not to make him angry. Cook the wrong thing for dinner, sure, talk to a neighbor, sure, someone else made him angry that day? sure. For abusers, any reason is a reason and the idea that if you were just better, quieter, neater, et... then you wouldn't get hit is just another way that they fuck with the mind of their victims. It puts the onus on them to not be abused, instead of the abuser not to abuse them.
      One thing that will probably be in my mind until I die is the diary of Gizzell Ford, a little girl whose father and grandmother murdered her after years of torture and abuse. She would write about how she was going to be so, so good so she wouldn't get punished, and then when she was still abused, feel like she failed.

    • @langaidin

      Mom is a current sitcom that does both pretty well. The basic premise is about a group of recovering alcoholics and drug-addicts, so there's some dark story-lines related to what their lives were like before they were sober, and issues related to relapse. But they also cover things like parental abandonment, teen pregnancy, and unexpected deaths. And, it's genuinely funny, too. And when it does get dark, it doesn't treat it as a "very special episode' like most of these do. It's more akin to MASH, where it weaves the 2 together seamlessly.

    I think M*A*S*H ptsd scene should have been higher up. The way he blocks out the memory by forcing himself to remember the baby as a crowing chicken. Its not until much later on once he has been beaten and broken by the war to the point that he can no longer fight the PTSD on his own that he has to face the fact that the mother was holding a child and not a chicken, and killed her own baby after his angry outburst. He held onto that for so long without confronting the real truth he went insane. In my opinion thats the most tragic moment in this list. I think it should have been higher. It pulled no punches and was raw and from the heart. No jokes, no distractions. Just pain and suffering.

      All In The Family was the first show to show it wasn't all sweetess and light in the sitcom family world. You would have never seen Harriet Nelson with bruises after Ozzie came home after a few too many at the bar, or June Cleaver with her pearls ripped off her neck after a rapists' attack, much less the aftermath...yet those things happened in the 1950s but no one talked about them, They were the "family secret".

      Even some well known celebrities who were born back then and were in families that went through this back in those days, if they'd wrote a book on their Life, and this were revealed to be present in that celebrity's childhood, it was shocking to people who are fans of this person

    Not-so-fun fact: Will Smith’s breakdown scene was not acting. While something like that was scripted, the tears and pain were real. Will, the real life actor, had gone through a similar situation with his own father, so when he breaks down he is reflecting on this. When Uncle Phil hugs Will it is a real hug meant to comfort him. *Now, go watch it again*

    • @mortricia_heller7713
      @mortricia_heller7713 3 года назад +17

      Actually, that statement is false. Will Smith’s parents may have been divorced but his father was very caring and still made a impact in his life. The tears and emotion actually came from Will trying so hard getting James Avery’s approval for his performance. But in that moment him ranting that he’ll get along without his father just fine, he actually brought him to the point of tears. Then ad libing “How come he don’t want me, man?” James Avery brought him in with that hug, making him cry for the first time on camera in his career and whispering in his ear: “That’s f**king acting right there”.

    One moment I would have included is from the Boy Meets World Season Four Episode “Dangerous Secret” where Shawn is hiding a friend at his trailer while his parents are away because her father is abusing her. It’s powerful because while at first Shawn’s way of dealing with the situation is not the right way in the end he makes the right choice and given that he was at most sixteen during all of this that’s a lot of heavy stuff to have to deal with that young. Something the episode doesn’t really acknowledge though is that Shawn’s parents have left their teenage son by himself while they’re off traveling so not only does the episode deal with child abuse it also indirectly touches on child abandonment.

    The Fresh Prince of Bel Air episode showed the dramatic talents of both Will Smith and James Avery. My other two favorite dramatic episodes of the Fresh Prince was, the episode when Will was held up at gun point and shot, and the other was when Carlton nearly overdosed on drugs (speed) he mistakenly thought were aspirin, he got from Will's locker, that Will got from kids at their school. There were very dramatic scenes in both episodes. I remember watching the Episode when Edith was sexually assaulted, I was about 11 or 12 when I saw that episode, and it was shocking, it seemed so real. The darkest moments in sitcoms, but they were all real-life issues that needed to be addressed.

    In that same episode of All in the Family, when Gloria is arguing with Edith over Edith’s reluctance to go to the police station to identify her attacker, while Archie and Meathead helplessly watch the exchange, is a bit of an acting clinic that, for me, is even more dramatic than the assault itself.
    All around, the entire story was an uncomfortable but incredible display of acting and writing talent.
    BTW, if an episode of Family Ties was to be included, it should have been “My Name is Alex”, the one where Alex is dealing with the death of a close friend in a car accident.
    Alex turned down a chance to help his friend, and thus was not in the accident. Naturally, Alex is dealing with Survivor’s Guilt and questioning everything.
    The show went darkest near the end of the first half when he melted down in the kitchen. I still tear up when recalling his parents coming into the kitchen and his Dad wrapping him in a hug when he breaks down. Again, an uncomfortable yet incredible display of talent and writing.

They never wanted to disappoint him, he always made the right call and had the occasional soft spot, but now he was to look everyone in the eye after basically killing three ppl for not testing for rabies, especially the guy who was his that could've lived another month waiting for a kidney.....this episode is also based off of a real life story.

    Love how (John Goodman) Dan displays his resolve.
    Turning, retrieving his coat and exiting in one graceful movement.....

    Will's scene was outstanding. Even before I watched Fresh Prince beginning to end, before I knew the characters, that scene made me cry.

    Scrubs only an honourable mention? A bunch of patients dying from Rabies due to a contaminated donor? That's pretty dark. Should be high on the list.

      A donor who had been in the series before too. It was fucking heartbreaking
