Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi Shares Advice He Gave Jodie Whittaker | SDCC 2017 | Entertainment Weekly

Seeing Michelle with her hair down is such a strange sight after pretty much exclusively seeing the Missy hairstyle since 2014.
I also find it really funny how Moffat spent the whole interview staring at the interviewer.
Rather ravishing though.
If there should be a female doctor, Missy should be IT.
I'm very tired of all the animosity toward Steven Moffat. Whether or not you were a fan of his writing, we owe him a ton of gratitude for bringing us the show for the last seven years as showrunner, and even longer as a writer in general.
Sometimes, I may not have enjoyed some of the writing during his tenure, but that is not at all grounds for people to say "Good riddance." Moffat is a very kind man who cares about his work, and I wish him the very best in his departure.
I think, in Series 8-10 he was starting to burn out. That's why it had so much up and downs.
I agree with you completely, but it's a happy fairwell.
Well one thing he was good at was writing the doctors speeches
The dude wrote Heaven Sent one of the best episode of the show's history. The hate he gets is beyond me
I don't like everything Steven did, but the ups far outweigh the downs. He is a brilliant writer of dialogue.
I love how Peter can be very relaxed and genuine. I love that he can. I love that when he does, he's the kindest and coolest man in the galaxy.
I think Jodie Whittaker is going to be incredible as The Doctor, but I am REALLY going to miss having Peter Capaldi as an ambassador for the show. He's got so much passion for the show and for the fandom, and just seems so unbelievably nice, and though I'm sure Jodie Whittaker will be as well, the show is really going to lose a lot when he leaves.
I totally agree. For the sake of the entire Who-verse I REALLLLY hope she does well...I hope we as watchers end up liking her; I hope I do.....I'm eager to see how it'll turn out, got some faith in the writers and stuff, but also nervous--what if it's bad?!
AdamIsTalking she will do great!
I'm without you watching the BBC will decide the ratings are too low and call it quits. But you won't notice, because you won't be watching!
i mostly hope the new director doesn't fuck it up, i don; t really like chibnall's precious episodes
AdamIsTalking
Yeah, that comment didn't age well, did it.
Michelle Gomez looks so pissed the whole video lol, natural Missy
Resting Missy face
Michelle must be Missy herself
Astral Cosmos Celestial the Third michelle gomez is just a character played by missy 😅
She's really a sweetheart on the fan level one on one, such a doll...
Astral Cosmos Celestial the Third I never thought I would feel attracted to an old woman
DZOMG - I really _really_ wish we could sit by the fireside and listen to Uncle Capaldi tell us tales of what it was like to watch Doctor Who in the original broadcast environment. Crusty little black and white TV, only 1 or 2 channels, Britain just emerging from post-war gloom, the new developing nuclear era and cold war. What was it like to see those titles, hear that music, and dream those dreams of soaring into such faraway universes?
Until we get to the point of being able to share experiences as easily and casually as we share photos on Facebook, the sad fact of the matter is that we'll never know what it was truly like to see the original show back then in those circumstance. You made it sound awesome though. Very well written comment.
peter is so .. perfect.
I will miss him as the doctor, he becomes my favourite, after him, was jon pertwee
Poor Mark. Doesn't even get a chair
Drashig He deserves none.
The Awkward Drashig
Doesn't deserve one.
With the exception of THE UNQUIET DEAD and possibly THE ROBOTS OF SHERWOOD, his stories are crap and he's a terrible actor.
He prefers to stand
Forrest Alexander What about Mycroft?
Sherlock mate!
Can't wait for Doctor 13. It's going to be different, and I'm not sure how I'll settle into it but I'm a Doctor Who fan and it doesn't matter who the Doctor is I'll still watch it. We'll miss you twelve.
Has everyone forgotten the War Doctor??!!!!! That makes Jodie the 14th Doctor
The War Doctor did lay down his Title in the Time War, because he had to break his promise he made as
The Doctor. Thats why she is counted 13, even though you are right about her being his 14th Inkarnation. And his 15th Body, thanks to Ten.
GEO 1371 she will do great!
No, no one has forgotten Jake Drake. Canonically, the War Doctor does not go by a number. 1-8, War, 9-13.
Tennant is still officially referred to as 10th (Vale Decem, latin for farewell ten) despite having two bodies, Smith 11th (Eleventh Hour), Capaldi 12th in his announcement, and 13th in her announcement.
In short
13 Numbered Doctors
14 Incarnations
15 Bodies
ok sorry *SIGH* i miss John Hurt
A wild Gatiss appears!
i like Mark. Gatiss, read Nightshade, brilliant Doctor Who book
How tall is he ?!
'Last of the Gadarene'-too.
Thanks for posting this. I love this panel even better than the 2015 version. I will honestly say this, season 10 is one of my favorite Seasons, in fact all of Capaldi's three year run. I confess, David Tennant is my favorite Doctor, but, sorry 10, 12 won me over, and I hope Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor makes history instead of being history.... literally. But that's a year and a half from now, so I'll wait, great video, and 👍.
i just love peter's hair
wow. peter seems absolutely lovely
Awesome interview, really loved these questions and the insights and perspective they all had to offer about their time on the show
oh man... i am so sad they all leave... at least pearl could have stayed longer... one season was far to few for one of my favorite companions :(
I heard bill's in the xmas episode (because show) so you're in luck
No kidding. We are all stuck with Clara season after season, with her flat one-dimensional profile with 11, then her insufferable bossiness with 12...then we get a true treat of a Companion like Bill and she’s gone after one season? What bullocks. :’(
It was a shame that was the luck of the draw
In the end peter said FUCKITY BYE! But the camera went CUT!
I wonder if Michelle gave Jodie advice on how to maintain coherence as a female in a role played by men.
I'm going to really miss all of them. But I know Jodie is going to be an excellent Doctor. Of course we can look forward to the day when Peter Capaldi comes back and meets his future selves. With Doctor Who your never really know how to feel sad or happy at the same time.
I'm gonna miss Capaldi
That was unexpectedly good!
Simm's Master:"Missy, I will never stand with the Doctor!" he take a good look at Jodie:" Yes, my dear, I will"
Oh my god his hairrrrrrr 🧡🧡🧡
Someone needs to say it, Peter looks hot af here.
These guys are sooooo lovely
peter looks so good here
soooo frustrating that the audio is so low in this video. I can't share it with anyone as they won't have the patience to try and hear it out all the way.
"Never be cruel, never be cowardly - and never, ever, eat pears!"
I........I don't want him to go.........I don't want HIM to go........😢......Peter Capaldi has been phenomenal. I really hope Jodie doesn't disappoint. I'll give her episode 1 of Series 11 to convince me.
One episode is usually all it takes.
Every new Doctor has taken at least two episodes to grow on me. (Except Eccleston.)
Eccleston was so good, he won you over after 5 seconds
They're both brilliant!
I totally get that; as much as I like David Tennant and Matt Smith, Capaldi felt the most like "The Doctor" to me, in the grand scheme of the show. (Even though I know his personality deliberately changes each time. Something about Capaldi felt particularly 'genuine.')
Love Bill's character; I'll miss her!
I think you have a great point peter because even though I didn't grow up with William Hartnell as the doctor I have watched him and he gave a sort of depth to the doctor you don't usually see in people who play the doctor l.
Did Moffat fuck up some times ? Yes but he also made some of my personal favourite episodes so...
Chris Chibnall has taken over the "fuck up" role and made it worse
The volume was so low on this, even compared to the video I had just watched (with little peeping chicks!), that I had to stick my phone to my ear! I'll have to rewatch it on my laptop to get to hear and see it at the same time. 🙄
I so love Peter calpaldi as the doctor he will be missed so much.
I'm gonna miss them!!!
For those of you who came for the advice he gives you can find it at 4:13
His hair is so pretty
Gomez and Capaldi look like they're just really hung over.
They probably had a zillion interviews that day, so they're zoning out a bit.
Love this crew 😉
I loved Capaldis performance as Doctor Who, I think he brought great energy to the show. His acting seemed very stage-like to me, if that makes sense?
Mark looks like a cool dad
We've secretly replaced all of the microphones with a potato. Let's see if anyone notices.
"Hi guys, I'm here with 'Doctor Who'" ITS THE DOCTOR!
Horrapple Movies Not for fans from the classic era, calm down :)
good questions
you really should put a mic on everyone! Sound is low.
Gonna wait for #Doctor 13
His advice: "Well, I basically told her don't let Moffat run the show and don't let them stick you with a bossy companion who you can never seem to get rid of.".
Jason P. *cough* Clara
Moffat isn't writing Series 11
I Z no he's not. Moffat is leaving the show along with Peter, just as Russell left after a few years.
Clare was awful mainly AFTER Matt left cuz you could tell she wanted the "boyfriend" doctor rather than the "Father/grandfather" one
Ethan John Ethan John Well, was she the only one to seek more than friendship in their relationship ? Lol nope. Twelve and Clara’s story explored their bond and saw it evolve over time. It was romantic (or even beyond this) and hinted so many times.
Did you forget to bring microphones? That sound is awful.
I hope Bill doesn't bugger off after the Christmas special. I want to see this character stick around for a while.
Philip Drury don't watch the new trailer
I'm sad that they killed off missy/the master but I can see why. She has been redeemed and there's not much else they can do with her story and trying to would be a bad idea
Phovon
Kind of like Clara’s story line. Don’t get me wrong, I did like Clara at the start but then started to not like here when she stayed for too long and became very bossy :/
Phovon the master/missy never truly dies we thought he did in the last of the time lords then he came back in end of time so we never truly know.
Why am I watching this lol I've been marathoning Matt Smith's era so I have no idea who any of these people are besides Capaldi and Missy! Just finished season 7 and am still mounring Amy and Rory D': ((no spoilers please))
Horace the Cheese hahahahahaha you’ll have a lot of fun watching the following seasons, trust me ;D
Moriarty is just stood there trying to orchestrate everything. 😝
It's PAINFULLY obvious that this interviewer has NO CLUE who William Hartnell was, or that he is no longer with us.
The ad locked up again so FORGET THIS!!!
Wait I know her. That woman at the far end who played The Master. Yeah she got her head cut off by Elizabeth Gracen in 1998.
He watched an old grumpy man when he was young he saw hinself time travel
I'm sorry, but I can't help it but...
*_WHY THE BLOODY HELL IS MYCROFT HERE?_* (the grammar is intended)
Jeri Divina he’s written a few episodes over the course of new who and starred in multiple episodes.
Peter looked so sad at the start
They all look so depressed, apart from Steven Moffat.
Probably tired!
Poor Gatiss
the sound is bad
I'm happy that "the son of the doctor" wasn't approved cause it just sounds awful.
One bit of advice would be a get out clause if the stories are shit. Capaldi should have had one of those written into his contract.
Missy is the best
can't hear this at all
Wtf fix your audio. It's not that hard. Don't post any more videos until you do.
I agree! It was impossible to actually watch and hear it at the same time on my phone! I will have to rewatch it on my laptop with the external speakers cranked up. 🙄
With earbuds it's good at least
Pity, I can't hear a thing! It's so muffled!
Goddamn I want to marry Missy/Michelle so badly
Advice 4:25
Thank you
my advice would be - be a better actress than you already are
...the only one I'll miss is Peter Capaldi, the rest can take a run and jump, especially Moffat.
Man. I love Peter. At least he's better than Rowan Atkinson lol
Farewell capaldi
welcome Whittaker
the worst part of 'The Master' being played by Michelle Gomez was in fact, in real life, she's very pretty for a middle aged lass, it's had to say 'I find 'The Master' attractive' . On a serious note, it's gonna be hard to say goodbye to Capaldi, he's brought the first three Doctor's put together to the table while making it his own and taking hint's from more recent Doctor's. Despite (again, an attractive woman) Jodie taking over the role, I think now, i've got used to the vague idea of it. She'll be great as the first female incarnation of The Doctor. I had thought of Emilia Fox being a female Doctor before hand, but I'm glad it's Jodie, as now i'm thinking Emilia would be better off playing a post-time war Rommana.
So cool
poor Peter looks so tired. he's aged so much since he first started. wonderful doctor but he so obviously needs a well deserved rest
Keir Taylor lol he still looks great
Ah yes the first would be the original if chris chibnal didnt screw everything up
It's not gonna be easy for long term fans to adjust to a female doctor after 50 years of men playing the role. Not saying it'll fail, but it will be very different
They couldn't get Mark a seat ;(
Please Bring Matt Smith Back!
For a multi-doctor special, yes. For being the lead in the show, no.
Yes
marshmallow gaming V nope sorry his incarnation’s time is done.
I hear if you insult a female Time Lord, Missy will come and kill you.
It's... Ood to see a hairstyle different then Missy's
The women he's about to become....
DEAD😂😂
Iam be new the doctor who
Oops I meant doctor who
Don't go please your can still change the your division pleas😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
One question. Did Steven Moffat choose the female doctor or was it Chris Chibnall?
Adrian SH Chris Chibnall chose and will be writing 13th doctors first scene in the Christmas special.
Chris Chibnall
Okay. Peter Capaldi is fine with the new doctor, but the timing is bad, but doctor who would maybe be canceled, because of ratings or it can save doctor who of ratings. Just maybe.
Chris Chibnall writes Broadchurch ... which has Jodie as a main character.
Just like Russell T. Davies with Chris Ecclescake, Chris Chibnall has ported over his favourite actor to play Doctor Who.
It worked big time with Ecclestone ... and I've never seen Jodie give a bad performance.
I wanted Gwendoline Christie ... but there were no tears at all when Jodie was revealed.
As for ratings ... this is BBC ... you'll get at least 2 more seasons before they pull the show for lack of ratings.
They are not funded by advertisers - but if they feel like they're shitting on the British people who nearly all pay the TV Licence, then they'll pull the show if it's too expensive (which it most certainly is!)
That's what happened to old Doctor Who back in the 1980s.
After a few years, they realised not many people were watching it - and pulled it.
Mai Nem actually in the 80s they pulled it because they didn't have faith in it, that's a completely different story now, in fact it's one of their most popular shows, if the BBC didn't have Doctor Who they wouldn't hav much else
Overnights don't even mean anything anymore, it's all about consolidated ratings which are very good right now
We need more bill potts
Poor sound.
Well after the very mediocre series 11. Hope Jodie and Chibnill gone after series 12 at end of 2020. Jodie has become worst Doctor ever. Good actress, but she is better at sticking to contemporary dramas like Broadchurch and stay away from sci-fi, where she has been dire
Chibnall has ruined Doctor Who for me. I gave him a chance in season 11, and I had high hopes for season 12, indeed parts of season 12 were fantastic, until he dropped the shit bomb of the Timeless Child and totally trampled and shat upon all of Dr Who history.
Dr who has had a sex change!?
Time lords probably don’t give a shit. Hell! Do they even recognize faces?
TommoHawkeye umm no because they’re FUCKING ALIENS.
Clearly his advice didn't work.
Maybe he should have told chibbers not to do what ended this last series...
Can't wait for Moffat to go and go and go until I tell him to stop
Crimson Wolf😑😑😑 ...Wtf??????
Moffat (about David Bradley's impression of Hartnell): "It's an astonishing recreation of his performance".
Er, no, no, no. Simply no.
...you haven't seen the episode
I was judging it based on his previous efforts
To St
Keep in mind that in the film, he wasn't playing the Doctor- he was playing William Hartnell, and conveying Hartnell's emotions took precedence over portraying the Doctor. In just the short scene we got of him at the end of the Doctor Falls, he already seemed more First-Doctor-like to me. In particular, his cadence was spot-on when he said "No, I don't... think so!"
I know, he was great as Hartnell, but not as his doctor
It really grinds my gears when people call the character "Doctor Who", it just shows that they don't actually watch the show.
A majority of the people who have played the character call it "Doctor Who". it was even credited as "Doctor Who" for a majority of the classic who. It's not serious, it's just more specific.
From what I heard it’s how they called the Doctor during the Classic Who era. Don’t be so condescending.
This is what is going to happen. the whole seasons of this new doctor is about being a woman, or about gay or transexual..
What a crass thing to say! There hasn't been a whole season about, say, Matt Smith's longer hair, or David Tennant's eye color, so there should be no reason at all to make a big deal about the new Doctor's gender! And no reason at all to have a romance, with ANY gender, because the Doctor should not have romances with the companions! That was a new development with Rose, and should NOT happen on any regular basis.
Well, the writers will have to avoid the doctor's marriages all together and write around them or it will be all about the doctor's gay side or something in that realm.
K Christensen it would still be about the doctor’s marriages and old flames. He just happened to change gender. And if it gets labeled then so be it, gay people have to stand our heterosexual couples in pop culture all the time, give them a break.
Ian MD character is alien no need to be offensive.
Why stevan why make a joke about someone is tragicly died
Too soon?
Michelle seems annoyed. I wish Moffat would spin off that chair, maybe then he would shut up.
yeah....I`ve got an advice....don't give up the day job pal.....crap actor....
Tony, you know what you can do with your advice?....stick it where the sun doesn't shine!
i dont like the new doctor
Suicide Joker well take her a chance u don't even seen season 11 give her a chance
I don't like her
marshmallow gaming V you haven’t even seen anything yet ya all you people say is waaa waaa I don’t like the new doctor and after 3 episodes you don’t want them to go.
Capaldi is so annoying whenever he talks about William Hartnell, which he does, a lot. He will always start admirably by saying how inspiring he was to him back in the 60s but then he will diminish his importance, saying that he is irrelevant now as people these days won't appreciate him. Well, we do; Hartnell was far more engaging and entertaining than Capaldi (who himself has the charisma of a paperweight). Also, David Bradley's impression of Hartnell in that docudrama was great, but his 1st doctor impression is shit! It's like he's spoofing him.
