GOING BACK HOME AFTER A PANDEMIC

- I've been stuck living in Manhattan for almost a year and a half during the Covid-19 pandemic. It's been very hard, especially because my whole family was in Italy.
This is the story of that big day that I've been waiting for for a year and a half, when I finally take a flight to Europe and hug my family again.

I'm so happy that you're finally able to make the return trip back to your home country! It must be so disheartening to not be able to visit for so long. I loved the interactions between your family, especially sharing the meals together. Hope you cherish your time in Italy!
Thank you so much Kenneth 😊
Hey Brother You recognize me?☺️
@@WhatashameMaryJaneI see you have a connection with Italy I really like England and France especially traveling the Mediterranean but you weren't in the US in 2000 very different than today
@@WhatashameMaryJanelooks just like Turkey wow the streets are the same
Your talent for choosing music that pulls out and conveys the emotion of the moment is genius.
Welcome home Mary Jane...Not in my wildest dreams would I have thought that it would have taken so long to say those words!
I was a relatively new subscriber to your channel, having subscribed to it in the fall of 2019, and later joining as one of your Patreon members in January 2020. I remember that February day when we all wished for you to have a safe trip to America. We all thought that you would have been back in three weeks. Little did anyone know then what was about to happen.
There is little reason to go over the extraordinary chain of events which have occurred over the last 15 months. Those of us who have been your subscribers have all lived through them. I for one, have felt like I have been riding on an emotional roller coaster that was out of control. It's hard for me to explain to you how I felt while I was watching this vlog. All I can say is, I felt a calming sense of relief. The roller coaster ride has finally come to an end...Welcome home Mary Jane!
Dear Ralph, I think you truly know how I've been feeling.
Thanks for sticking with me as a patron for all these long months. I'm very grateful for your support.
@@WhatashameMaryJane Thank you for having been a lifeline to me and for many others during this pandemic. I'm glad that I was able to give to you a sense of support through my emails and channel comments (RUclips and Patreon). Having come full circle, I now feel that there is a sense of closure to this chapter of the WASMJ story. I could not help thinking after watching this vlog, that it was like watching a season ending episode from a Netflix series...And I can't wait for the next season to begin. :)
@@ralphm5192 That’s nice, I see what you mean and I think I agree 😊
Your eyes and energy are different when you are in Italy and that moment when you have eaten normal quality food closing the eyes and crying of happiness 👏🏻😅😂😂😂😂

I can feel the love you have for your family and Italy bursting from this video. Thank you for sharing your reunion with us. I cried tears of joy throughout. Venice is beautiful. I look forward to visiting one day. I also look forward to seeing more videos from your home country. Enjoy your time there!! XXX

Oh Mary Jane, I had tears in my eyes when I heard you say you planned on not seeing your parents/family for 3 weeks but it turned into over a year, I’m so happy that your home!!! You are a resilient young woman and I admire your ability to make the best of your time being stuck in the US and bringing us along for the journey

I have never seen such joy in a person. Welcome home! You renew my heart.
😁 😁 😁 😁 😁
I'll never understand those tourists who stop in Venice for only a few hours via a cruise. Not only is it horrible for Venice and the environment overall, but you don't really get to know the city. Venice was my favorite place I visited in Italy in 2018. I stayed for several days and got to learn about it and really soak it in.
congratulations! Mary Jane. I hope You have happy days with your family!!
Thank you! 😊
I just discovered your videos a day ago. I've watched a few, starting with a day in Friuli, because I'm across the border in Slovenia. I've been riding thru parts of Friuli for years, but I've only seen the surface of it. You offered a better look in your videos. Thanks. Each of your videos have been revealing your developing skills as a story teller. It's wonderful to see! You are doing very nice work!
Hi and welcome to the channel!! What's your name?
I'm also experiencing some of that part of Friuli that has Slovenian minorities, along the border. I shot a video about one of these experiences but I think I'll edit it during the fall or winter. Thank you for your comment!!
@@WhatashameMaryJane Hello again. Name is Richard. I've asked a few times, but no reply. Can you tell me which Video editing program you use? I am currently searching for something easy to use, to construct short videos of my area, Ljubljana.
@@rjo2020 I use Adobe Premiere Pro, one of the most advanced editing programs. I still have to read and answer a few newer comments, are you sure you asked several times?
Richard is not a Slovenian name as far as I know, right?
@@WhatashameMaryJane Thanks for your response! Yes, your program is very advanced. I will look at it again. Richard is an English name, but I am from the USA. I am enjoying your videos because of the stories you tell, and your perspectives. Your social evaluations and your enjoyment of the people and scenes you visit. You are thoughtful, insightful, passionate, creative, and engaging! A good soul, I think. Refreshing to encounter. I have often ridden in the hills, mountains and back country of Slovenia, Friuli, and the Dolomites falling in love with it all, but lacking the words to describe it. So I've used used photos and videos to communicate about it. I was asking about the program you are using because I believe I need something better than, more versatile, than I-Movie, which comes with Mac computers. Thank you for letting me know. Best wishes! Oh! You hosted a live chat the other day. That is where I asked multiple times. I think you didn't notice because you were possibly overwhelmed with the volume of comments of others streaming in.
@@rjo2020 Before starting with Premiere Pro I used a lightweight free software called Wondershare Filmora which I believe is a little more advanced than iMovie, although I’ve never used the latter so don’t count on this information. Apple sells their own professional video editing software which is called Final Cut Pro and is easier to use than Premiere Pro but still very complete and professional. It retails for $300, one time payment.
Loved the music and introduction. Such a beautiful place to visit!

Ciao Max.

This is a very beautiful video! Superb editing job! The closeup shots of the Tramezzini sandwiches... oh, Dio!
Really touching video. The patience and love your father has for you... reminds me of my own father. Just very beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

A sweet and well-constructed video - - "reads" more like a short documentary. I was immediately struck by the visual comparisons between Manhattan and Venice, microcosms of the US and Italy, respectively. The contrast, so stunning. One could see the American aesthetic with boundless energy and optimism, but ultimately a market-driven landscape. Whereas the Italian scenes revealed a culture rightfully obsessed with aesthetics. As an American of Italian heritage I have a foot firmly planted in both worlds. Kudos, MaryJane . . . there's substance to your beauty.
What an interesting observation Roberto. In two or three simple sentenced you were able to capture so many essential aspects of the two cultures. Kudos to you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hope to read you again in the comments in the future.
Constructive comment: "we take things for granted", not "we give things for granted." Awesome video!
Very good I didn't realize that, thank you. We use the second version in Italian.

Such an amazing and emotional video! I'm so glad you got to go back home to see your family and loved ones. I visited Venice in 2016 and loved it! It was way more crowded when I was there and I remember all the horror stories about the cruise ships coming. Can't wait to see more of your videos :)
Thank you so much Alex!
Just imagine 3.000 people time being dumped at once in an ancient tiny delicate island of 60.000 inhabitants, who walk around a few hours, try to take the best selfies, litter and then go away.
@@WhatashameMaryJane you're welcome! I remember there might have been a cruise ship passing through. I think that isn't a good idea because it does damage the infrastructure in Venice.
Plus, being there for a few hours is not enough time to see everything! Enjoy the rest of your trip! I'll be tuning in 😁
This is such a touching video. I really felt your joy in returning to Venice. I hope you'll find more and more happiness from being at home with your family now.
Thank you.🙏
Glad you finally made it back home to your family. This is what it's about now. Getting back to living and being with our families.
Yes.
😊
I had no idea about the cruise ships...wow, I hope that this situation results in respect for the city and not big business/money. Glad you finally got to see your parents, loved the tour of Venice!
It's a problem that sits on top of a number of others that all together form a huge, progressive, enviromental disaster: they're slowly (and not even so slowly) destroying the lagoon of Venice, which is what the city sits on. Without a healthy lagoon there will be no city of Venice anymore.
Beautifully done, MJ. So glad you're with your family and back home at last! Venice looks absolutely magnificent...maybe I'll get there one day. Enjoy yourself and looking forward to your Italy vlogs! ☮🌻
Thank you Judith!! I hope you'll make it there one day :)

What a stunning and moving vlog!! It’s so nice to see you reunited with your family! I can’t believe you were able to make such a beautiful impression of Venice in such a short time; I know you have grown a lot as a filmmaker, but it’s still amazing to watch.
Were those cicchetti that you were eating from Alessandra whom you interviewed in one of your earlier vlogs about Venice?
Aww such a big compliment, thank you!
Yes those were the same thing! But definitely not as good as Alessandra's ones... ;)
Hey i have watched your all video , in 3 days really feeling happy and going to travel the world mindfully , highly inspired by you .
Seeing you walk out of the airport brings back memories. I'm glad you made it back home MJ! 😊
OMG!!! Tramezzino con tonno e oliva is my favorite! It's the perfect lunch.
I've never seen Venice that empty. 😳 I can't believe there's hardly any people in Piazza San Marco.

another lovely film mary jane! your dad looked very proud at 9:55, but also very hungry and wanting to attack those sandwiches :D
I am just discovering your channel and started to see what kind of content there is. Though, I have to react about this particular point: the exact moment when you are at the airport, after picking luggage up and going through doors, knowing family is just behind😊 I experience it once a year, as I live in Finland but am from Nice, France. I can imagine the joy of your parents, especially. I have the pride these last years to come with my son also and privilege to show the region where I grew up. I discovered recently thanks to DNA test a whole part of myy origins, which remained until now quite mysterious. My strongest roots are from Veneto, I am then somehow a neighbour to you! I even started to learn Italian, as I want to feel these hidden part of my family history. Passioned by geopolitics, geography, deep discussion, I think there will be a lot of interesting things to listen!
And in a few days, direct flight Tampere to Nice to be at the exact moment of this "uscita" door at the airport, with all my childhood time behind, ready to be taken and enjoyed for a few days! All the best for you and I wish to share your parents and sister joy everytime they have the luck to see you again! 🎉
Grande! No grandi navi, lunga vita a Venezia 🌹
I thought I was the only one who made those faces when eating in Italy!!
If one good thing can come out of the Pandemic it’s for us all to treasure the things we take for granted and perhaps think more of how we impact our world. I know when I travel again there will be more trains and less planes.
Glad you’re finally reunited with your family.
Thank you for a beautiful film that bought back many happy memories of my trip to Venice in January 2019… Venezia è sacra.
Ahahah!
I'm glad to hear you'll take more trains and less plains, very well said.
Thank you and it was my pleasure.
Love your video , love italy, this video make me want to go back so much to Venise
Very nice! Thanks for sharing your return to this beautiful city and reuniting with your family.
Bravissima. Soprattutto per il discorso finale. Grazie.
Bentornata!
Grazie Marco!!!
You are a pro.. you filmed, edited, sounded, and commented a terrific video in such a short short time... :)
Aaaah thank you so much!!!! 🥰
I agree with you that cruise ships are a terribly bad way to visit new places. They acquaint you with places in the most superficial and hasty way. Surely the factory cruise ships ought to be banned from Venice forever. Oh, and WELCOME HOME 🏠.
Thank you Robert. I don't know the impact of cruise ships in other environments, but in Venice it's very big. Venice is not an island in open sea, it's in a lagoon, which is a very delicate ecosystem. The spaces are narrow and the bottom of the lagoon is very high. Plus all the cultural/socio/economic disaster that the guests of these floating cities cause.
I live in Veneto and I must say that pandemic Venice has been amazing. Clear water and without shoulder to shoulder people.
Good to hear it from a local.
Seeing Venice like this made me so so happy.
Congrats girl..finally back to home sweet home. I'm happy you made it. Enjoy yr stay with yr love ones.!
Thanks :)
One of your greatest videos of all time. Im so happy to see you got to see and spend time with your family after all this time. Very emotional video. The way you use music is really effective, I know ive said that before but it does pack an emotional punch, especially the way you showed Piazza san Marco. Venice is extraordinarily beautiful. It feels like such a relaxing place. If you want to see a great romantic drama that captures Venice so beautifully check out the movie 'Summertime'. Do the cruise ships emit water pollution into Venice? How else are they harming Venice? What are some things that tourists can do to help mitigate flooding?
Thank you for asking. The cruise ships create several different big problems in Venice.
1) The area is a lagoon, not open sea, and therefore the seabed depth is very shallow (we're talking about 1 to 20 meters I believe, just to give an idea). Therefore the seabed of the itinerary that these ships go though has been dug, causing not only a number of environmental damages, but also for the famous high tides to become more aggressive.
2) The air pollution these ships bring to a city that is famous for having no cars is huge. In this article you can take a look at some numbers in the tabs ilbolive.unipd.it/it/grandi-navi-venezia-quanto-inquinano
3) Because of the lagoon environment and the huge mass of these ships, they're very hard to control, therefore they always have other 2 (or 3?) smaller motor boats attached with metal cables to help maneuver them. Despite this, there have been multiple cases where the control of these ships has been lost. I'll leave the explanation of this point to the scary video of one of the last accidents, in 2019. Keep in mind that the ship had just passed the dock of piazza San Marco. ruclips.net/video/EZmGrSAsYes/видео.html
4) A cruise ship has a mass of about 65 thousand tons and it moves a mass of water equal to its weight. Why is this relevant to Venice? Because since the appearance of motor powered boats in the last decades, the process of erosion of the foundations of the buildings because of the waves of the canals has been horribly accelerating. It's a huge problem in the long term for Venice, because the foundations of the buildings by the water have been built with a peculiar technology and they cannot be replaced properly. Already people are asking to limit the number of motor powered boats in the city, you can only imagine how the passage of a cruise ship in the lagoon contributes to this phenomenon. Here's an article that explains the technicalities of this www.tuttobarche.it/magazine/venezia-grandi-navi.html
5) The human impact is also big. Inhabitants and business owners of the city constantly complain about this particular type of tourists, who come, litter, crowd the narrow streets that people use to go to work, stop in the middle of bridges to take selfies and then go away without significantly contributing to either the economy nor the culture of the city. They usually only buy cheap souvenirs or cheap clothes, which are mostly imported from China.
@@WhatashameMaryJane this is so helpful and informative for many people worldwide. Thank you. Is it too late to interview an activist there about it? Cant wait to see your next video.
@@WhatashameMaryJane Occasionally I go back to a video to see other people's comments, and today I saw this. This is really good information MJ. I've always had an aversion to cruise ships of this type, and felt that if someone wants to go on a cruise, they should go on a two or three masted schooner, or a square rigged windjammer - and not into a city like Venice! You've outlined the problems very well. I know you have your own agenda for your stay in Italy, but a video about this would be beneficial. The problem is all about making fast money. I think limiting power boats would be a good idea, of course allowing fire, rescue and other essential power boats. I'm glad I saw this. Thank you.
@@artivism4068 Too late? It’s never too late! 😊
@@daviddb4858 Hi David. I would love to talk about these problems in a video or some videos, I’m just afraid of giving out some inaccurate pieces information because I’m not an expert on the matter. Interviewing someone who is thought, as Jason suggested, could be a great solution.

Hi Mary Jane "what a shame🤗" I just discovered your channel. Anyways I'm very happy for you. I myself have lived in Friuli for 36 years. However I am now in Vancouver Canada for work. Oh wow that's really hot! Here it's been quite hot too, but more around 29-32°C, although a bit more humid than usual. Here everyone is complaining about how hot and humid it is, to me this feels like a breeze in comparison to the New York summer weather 😏
Best video production yet! What a great movie you have produced.
Uh thank you!!!
