    I've been riding 27.5 for years, and just bought a new 27.5 bike three weeks ago. I'm sure I'd get used to the 29 wheels if I committed to buying one, however, I've demoed the Ripley, the Following and Offering, Hightower, etc (modern 29" bikes) and the key for me is fun, just like you said. I still feel more confident on the smaller wheels and love the nimbleness and responsiveness on the trail. I'm an outlier in my group though. I'm 6'1" and ride L/XL depending on brand. I love big days in the saddle (biggest ride this season was 60 miles and 8k ft of climbing) and feel like the smaller wheels are actually less cumbersome for me to handle when I get tired, even if they are, on paper, more efficient. To each their own though! Ride what you like. I think the industry will continue to produce 27.5 bikes, especially after seeing the new Mojo and 5010 launches.

      Thanks for weighing in! Yeah, 27.5 certainly isn't dead but there has been such a wide acceptance to 29 in the last 5 years. Like you, I really enjoy the nimble, less cumbersome feel of the slightly smaller wheel... tires weigh less too🤘😁

      Me too man. I’m on a 17’ transition scout, I demoed the Ripley and it’s nice and all but it didn’t have the agility of my scout. I’m seriously considering the mojo4 . And I’m a large framed 5’11 man.

    27.5 leans easier because there is less gyroscopic force keeping it up. That's my input! Great review, as ALWAYS.

    I prefer 27.5. Used to have 29. The smaller wheels are more fun. I’m told they’re slightly slower but my times have improved marginally and it’s more nimble and whippy feel. 5’10” 186 lbs.

    Well just when I thought I could not love the Ibis bikes any more you come out with this video . Man Ibis bikes just ROCK and by the way the 27.5 bike is the 2 Stroke of the bicycle world, you heard it here first . ( meaning they are just a lot more fun to ride than a 29er ) .

    Man I’m still rockin’ my 2019 Bronson V3 (27.5) and love it. It’s a bit much for my local trails, but is perfect for the trails at my house out in the Appalachian gnar. I keep thinking about getting a short travel 29er for local trails, but everytime I demo em I’m kinda disappointed- I can’t really explain it but they just don’t beg me to goof around and play on em like 27.5s do. I’ve never been a roadie and don’t even consider myself a cyclist, I’m a mountain biker and that’s it. So maybe that’s it, I just still have too much bmx from my youth in me. Lol. Now I’m thinking and aggressive hardtail 27.5 for home trails, like the Stylus.

    FUN is relative term. For me 29 is best wheel size.
    IMO most important for good bike is geo.
    I have rode 26 for years, tried 27.5 (27 actually ) and 29 is the best for me. I'm not very tall (186cm), but modern 29ers are awesome. In every aspect of riding I like them, climbing, descending, cornering, go over things...
    But to each his own.

  • @rossimessi1
    @rossimessi1 2 года назад

    Best wheel size comparison i've seen. Matches my experience.
    Plus and cons to both.
    Current fashion/trends are crazy. few years ago 90% wouldn't be seen dead on a 29er, Now its the cool trend that 90% buy!!
    This video shows the exact differences. Thats the physics of it. Doesn't change with the year. What was true in 2018 is true in 2022 and will be true in ten years time. Physics.

    I think you nailed it when you said you felt like a better rider on the M4. Coming off a V1 Ripmo, I always felt like I was a little too high off the ground on super techy stuff which made me a little hesitant at times (like horsethief bench drop in). I set up my M4 mullet style, which equalized many of the differences between the Ripley and the M4. It's an amazing bike and only on the most chunkiest stuff do I wish I still had the Ripmo.

    I ride exactly the same Ripley with a similar setup for almost a year and I put like 2500 miles on it. Longest trip was 56 miles with nearly 2000 vertical yards. And it can do longer trips, next year I’ll do the alpine crossing. Damn this is a good ride. These carbon rims accelerate so quick and the coding of the kashima suspension is nuts!!!! But it‘s dangerous cause it leads you to do stupid things so it threw me over a couple of times. I wasn’t able to ride all the time couse of spraining. And I still hated just to stay away from the bike. So much fun and I‘m 39 y (I should have known better but can’t stop it). you just want to be on that bike. This is really something.

      @@mtbyumyum I put some bigger breaks on the front wheel. For me this was really an upside. How about the bigger suspension you put on your fork is it worth a try? I was thinking about it in the first place but hence didn’t do it. I run the Ardent which is a good compromise for me but sometimes I want to be faster. Any suggestions about a fast tire combination which allows you to descent as well?

    Interesting comparison. Great review as always! I had similar thoughts when I compared a Bronson to the tallboy and hightower. It’s so rocky rooty where I ride that I feel I need that 29er rollover if I am going to only have one bike. If i were to go 27.5 I would provably go long like an hd5 or altitude.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, if I only owned one bike at a time it would be a 29er... it's undeniable, the 29er has some real benefits. After spending over a month on this Mojo 4, I picked up the new Rocky Mountain Altitude. 160mm 27.5 rear with a 160mm 29er front. It's been an absolute blast!!

  • @da5idg00dman
    @da5idg00dman 3 года назад +2

    Great stuff - thanks for doing this. One thing I noticed is that the riding you did looks mostly fast and flowy, but not super technical - no big rocky descents, etc. For that kind of riding, I can see how a 27.5" bike is better, more nimble, etc. But for the really gnarly rocky stuff, I think that's where the 29'er shines. So it comes down to the kind of riding you mostly do, knowing that whatever bike you choose may not work as well on other trails. The good news is that all these bikes are so awesome, there's really no bad choice. Thanks again!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, good point. I mentioned in the video, the M4 would get hung up in more technical terrain. The benefits of the 29er are obvious but for some, the smaller wheel is more fun, playful and easy to move around. As you mentioned, comes down to the terrain you ride, riding style and expectations. Thanks!

It is not as poppy as the Ripley but on higher speeds, the bike is definitely more stable even though the fork has a smidge less travel. Would be great if you can get one for a comparison. I think there is an argument to own multiple bikes still. There is no such thing as a quiver killer, there are always compromises to be made. I love my Tallboy 3 for the majority of my riding but would still like to own a more enduro focused bike for trips to the Alps where uplifts are common

    Man. I'm on the fence so much with the 27.5 bike. I just sold my Pivot Mach 4 Carbon because it felt super twitchy and was easily knocked off course. Definitely fun just messing around boosting but the 27.5 wheels will bounce you off trail features more violently. More feedback is what people want I guess. I also went head to head with the Santa Cruz Megatower and Noman. I 100% preferred the Megatower for tech and jumps feel great. The nomad did jump a bit better and was tighter turning as expected. I guess I prefer the stability and swoop of the bigger wheels. Currently looking at the ripley because it does not seem like a huge 29er. I'm basically the exact same height and build as you. The new Pivot Mach 4 also feels more compact but doesn't have as much travel as I want. I wonder how the tallboy compares to ripley? Thanks for all the awesome reviews although I'm not sure if it helps the bike madness or fuels it!!

    3:02 Very interesting observations. According to Fox, isn't the Grip 2 damper technically a downgrade on the Fit4? Are there certain trail scenarios when both shine? Maybe for a later vid...

    • @erikjorgenson9826
      @erikjorgenson9826 3 года назад +1

      The Fit4 is lighter, but the Grip2 has (in my opinion) a better trail-feel. If you want a relatively "XC-Stiff" in sus-feel, the FIT is for you.

    • @alexiscariaselmusico
      @alexiscariaselmusico 3 года назад

      Why did you change your ripmo?
      I demo one last weekend and it was great but I also own a Santa Cruz tallboy (I know 2 different bikes) but I do feel that Santa Cruz are more comfortable bikes. What influenced your decision?
      My other option was to get a ripley with a 140 mm fork but my hands were hurting after the ride I don’t kw if it was the body position due to its geometry. The tallboy has very similar geometry than the ripely though, but idk.
      Any thoughts MTB yum yum??
      Great review by the way! I also looked into the mojo before. But not too sure about 27.5 wheels, my trails and chunky, rocky and crazy here in NJ

    I’m 5’0 tall and a new rider. I rode the Ripley once, and I initially felt the bike was way too big, but once i got on a trail i couldn’t believe how easily it took me over roots and rocks. But it still felt big to me, like I was riding on top of it instead of as a part of it, if that makes sense. Do you think that given my size the 27.5 wheels would be a better fit” I’m a scardy-cat when it comes to mountain biking, and I’m looking for something that gives me the most confidence on the trails - i want to be less afraid.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  3 года назад

      They're just very different. The M4 feels much more nimble and maneuverable. The switchblade is more capable in basically every situation and would make for a better trail bike for most people... but the M4 is very easy to ride, lighter weight and more poppy and fun... very easy to move around.
