I simply said it’s not as popular as the NFL, NBA and or Football/Soccer. I didn’t say it isn’t popular at all. But seeing that sales information takes some digging to find right information. Most concrete I’ve seen that in 2022 the NHL only grossed 4.54 billion. The NFL however 14 billion. And the NBA I highly doubt it’s anywhere near given the tv contracts are worth a couple billion not including Jersey sales, arena attendance and etc and global appeal to the international market of more countries that aren’t freezing cold. And Soccer I don’t even have to explain how popular soccer is around the world. So I can respect how much you like your sport but my statement stands. Respectfully.
I'm a big enough hockey Fan. I loved watching the stuff when 989 made games. Played all of the early EA hockey games. I'm from CT Hartford whalers were my team. Never played NHL face off. I don't think I've played a hockey game in decades. I can name quite a few smaller big name players from the Golden eras too. I've played EVERY other 989 game. Not a baseball fan like that but loved pennant race.

They also had a sister version of the show called nba the life which also innovated career mode in a basketball game. It had critical acclaim for a year or two but they never made a good second step and ultimately dropped NBA titles in favor of focusing solely on the show after nba 08 the life v3. Which is a bad game. Especially in 2007 where 2k7 continued their assent over live and live becoming … the nothing we consider it to be today. They also didn’t bother with an nfl version likely because madden already started doing a career mode in 06 iirc
The NFL actually went to EA and asked them if they wanted exclusive rights. NFL was pissed at 2k for releasing their game at $29.99 as they viewed their licence as a premium brand that shouldn’t be sold at shovelware prices. It’s a shame. I would love to see what nfl 2k24 would of looked like

As it relates to hockey, the main reason 989 failed in hockey is that there were two other hockey series on the PS2. The EA Sports NHL series and NHL 2K series both existed on the PS2, while also being significantly better games than NHL FaceOff. Hockey just isn't a big enough sport to sustain three different series at the same time. Today, there's one NHL series, EA Sports' NHL series, mainly because EA introduced the skill stick. The main way of controlling your player's stick for pass aiming, deking (fancy moves), and shooting the puck is with the right analog stick. It was introduced in NHL 08 (the first on the PS3) and was improved upon majorly in NHL 10. NHL 10's control method was so much better than NHL 2k10, that there was no real reason to pick it up. And 2K basically quit on the series after for the same reason they quit on their MLB 2k series, the competitor was just too good.

Gameday 98’ was my sh*t back n the day, I was a beast on that game and my friends hated playing me because I wrecked shop and took no prisoners. The best feature I loved about Gameday 98’ is that when you made a massive hit with a defensive player to an offensive player, the screen would flash white with lightning and you’d hear a loud ass crackle of thunder…….if your not looking for it or forget about it’ll definitely startle you….lol ✌🏾👊🏾🏈
i miss the ps2 era where there was mad sports games releasing from different companies all with a different feel and modes. if you liked basketball you had live ,2k, ballers, nba street, and 1, college hoops etc now its just nba 2k. same with football and baseball. its just one company making each sports game every year now.
Great video but to be fair ... Gameday held the crown from 95 to 2000 until 2k went back & forth until 2004 when 2k5 clearly took the crown that year. side note 989 (sony sports) also had a good basketball series during its last few years on release as well.

I spent HOURS on NFL Gameday 98 when I was stationed in the Marine Corps. We’d go two player co-op or two on two in our dayroom. It was so much better than Madden 98, which didn’t have polygonal graphics at the time.

Madden 2001 (the launch madden for ps2) was pretty much the GTA3 for its cycle. In that every madden has been building off of it. I still remember how creepy everyones eyes looked in it. Lmao.

NFL 2K5 is STILL the greatest NFL game ever made. Even modern Madden can't touch NFL 2K5. EA had a right to be scared. NFL 2K5 is far superior to any Madden ever made.
They didn’t convince the nfl to give them an exclusive license. 2k sold there game for 20 dollars one year and the nfl didn’t like that. The nfl offered ea and 2k the license. But ea outbid them lol.

People today think that EA's John Madden video game was always the dominant pro football video game going back to it's inception, but at least to me and everyone I knew playing video games,, the Madden games were always the slow & weird-to-play B-tier football sim from game. IMO, the best football game on the Sega Genesis was the Joe Montana "Sports Talk Football" series which was relatively fast and fun to play. The season sim was streets-ahead of Madden, and I remember the Joe Montana football games kept running player stats through the season sim as far back as 1993. When the PlayStation came along, it was a similar story, but this time NFL Game Day was the new, fun, fast, easy-to-play game on the market. It played smoother than Madden who was still relying on the clunky 3-window receiver system that I always felt was so clunky and unnecessary. IMO, it wasn't until the PlayStation II started selling back in 2001 that Madden's game play not only caught up to it's competitors, but actually exceeded it's competition by leaps and bounds. For the PS2 generation, Madden was producing Tier-S cutting-edge football simulations and was constantly being pushed by the 2K team to keep innovating. Then we all know the story....NFL issued an exclusive license....EA stopped innovating, and started sending out repackages turds year-in, year-out. Yet another reason why Roger Goodell is the worst commissioner in the history of modern sports----unless you're an owner of an NFL franchise, then you are 100% justified in believing that he's the greatest commissioner in pro-sports history.
I was there born in 1991 it was all about Gameday up til 2001 and game day 2004 was great they had better tackle animations then madden 04 I remember something about the pro bowl being better in game day too. Madden 05 was amazing but 2k5 was better madden 06 and after were the best and todays game blows all of them out of the water. Sleeper football game besides blitz was Nfl Fever 2004.
aw maaaan....I had a copy of GameDay 98! I remember my mom's cousin was in town visiting with kids. Me and my little cuz were in my room playing Gameday and he peaked around the corner and said "This game looks damn near real!! 🤯" looking back, i can honestly say not at all 😆😆, but at the time, we had no better of a reference point between videogaming and real-life football. it was definitely a classic 💯
NFL game Day in the 90's was great! 2K took over in the 2000's until EA got the exclusive contract.. I haven't taken Sim football seriously ever since.
Young fella gaming was not new. Console gaming was not new in the 90s. 989 Studios was a great time. Gameday & Gamebreaker were AMAZING. The other 989 titles were solid, just not as popular.
GameDay blew Madden away until around '99-'00. Smoother gameplay and a LOT more innovation year to year with player control. They also had a franchise mode with draft (4 rounds) before Madden. All innovations added a lot of fun. Madden played catch-up and copied many features within a year or 2. AI was much better at first as well. Where 989 messed up with GameDay was outside of the innovation and improving graphics, the gameplay was stale. Same game, slightly different rosters. In all versions running between the tackles was unproductive while running outside the tackle averaged 10 per carry. The same plays glitched for big plays every year. I specifically remember a shotgun play called "deep outs" was money to the slot receiver every single time. Indefensible even with a human player on defense knowing it was coming. Once Madden caught up in other areas they had superior branding AND a superior product
Yes you are correct my city hasn’t had a pro hockey team in 20 years. But I also do research before I make my essays. And I can say with confidence I stand on what I said because hockey isn’t as popular than Soccer (football), American football (NFL), or the NBA.

Gameday 98 was huge when it came out. It was loved. Then the games got progressively worse
