@@ruthaisling Ruth, I think you are very brave: spending nights alone in bothies and haunted caves, wild camping . . . there is no end to your love of adventure. But be careful with the red deer -- watch out for the stags in the rutting season. They prefer blondes . . .
Ruth, I'd recommend you search out a 1945 film 'I Know where I'm Going' A love story, it features a small boat battling the Corryvreckan whirlpool as a key part of the plot. The film itself is steeped in folklore and captures the etheral, almost mystical sense of the Scottish Isles. Great video. Thank you.
Love that film. The journey on the sleeper train takes me to memories when l travelled to stay with my granny in the Highlands every school holiday. Though did go by car sometimes. ❤
@@ruthaisling it’s my favorite offering from Ardbeg. It’s has like a peppered steak taste from the smoke that changes into a coffee and black fruit finish. It’s very very good. I definitely recommend trying it when you have a chance.
Love your videos! Really look forward to them every Sunday evening. Reminds me of my younger days in Scotland - great times. I think all videos should be narrated with a beautiful soft Scottish Edinburgh lilt- look forward to the next one as ever.
Most enjoyable, and informative, episode. The whirlpool was neat, but the rugged remote Jura segments were my favorite. So beautiful. Thanks for taking us along on another Scottish adventure.
Excellent episode Ruth!! So glad you got to make the boat trip to see the whirlpools up close & ride in them. Thank you so much for sharing your experience on your channel!! 😀😀
Hi Ruth thanks for the video. This was very interesting and hearing about the whirlpool was great, can only imagine how dangerous it could be if anyone was caught up in them. 👍👍👍👍

Thank you so much for this episode. My eldest son worked on Jura for one of the owners there. He said it was one if not the most beautiful place he had worked. I had to make do with his photos and stories, you managed to bring it alive. As usual a fantastic episode.
Ruth, I can imagine the Coryvreckan Whirlpool getting pretty fierce, if tides are right! In your rundown of world's biggest whirlpools, I thought you were going to mention that one monster off the coast of Japan --- forget exactly where it is right now, but Kuga-san of Kuga's Travels did a great piece on it, and even very powerful boats had a great deal of trouble getting into an out of it!
This whirlpool was featured in an excellent 1945 film called "I know where I'm Going" starring Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. Great movie. This might be a great title for your travel vids!

The reasons for there being no woodland stem indirectly from the Act of Union. 1. The huge Caledonian Forest was gradually cut down to provide timber for the wooden warships of the growing 'British" navy, not just timber for the actual frames, decks and planking but also for the masts and spars, etc. The trees were cut and floated down rivers to the coast. And of course the British navy was huge. 2. Following the Jacobite risings we had the clearings. The indigenous people and their ragged cattle were cleared from the land to make way for sheep (which eat the tops out of young saplings, and for sporting estates for the new rich (industrial revolution) - they paid gamekeepers to annually carry out planned burnings of the hills and moors to provide new growth heather for grouse to feed on.
andyallan2909 -- that is all very true. Also, it is said that all the trees in Fife were cut down to build the Great Michael for James IV's navy. It was the largest warship of its day, and put the fear of god into the English. Incidentally, much of the Black Forest was cut down and floated down the Rhine to build ships for the Dutch East India Company, Holland being somewhat deficient in the forestry department. The Germans had the good sense to replant it.
It's funny, I always used to think Corryvreckan was near Islay due to Ardbeg naming one of their whiskies 'Corryvreckan' ha ha. Fantastic video, that's my curiosity fulfilled.
Another informative video. You do go to some amazing places, and I always find your videos interesting. Great scenery and love your accent. Thanks from south Wales.
Lovely video, Ruth, thanks. We went to Jura twice on a trip to Islay last year but didn’t get as far as the whirlpools - did have our 5 year old son with us so not sure that would have been wise. Loved Jura and did say the tide between Islay and Jura is fierce - not sure I have seen anything like it and it was a comparatively calm day when we went over - I wouldn’t imagine it would be an area for an inexperienced sailor! Loved this video and LOVE Jura - definitely a place to go back too - stunning wilderness and just literally magical
Wow. !!!!! As someone who isn't as young as she was 😂 I am no longer able to hike or climb like I used to in The Highlands and on the islands. We still travel way up north because we love it, but are only able to stroll. Therefore I love watching your videos, dreaming that I am you.!!!! This particular one was marvellous.
Wow that whirlpool was quite something - thank you for showing us, I don't think I could do the boat trip, much as I'd like too, I have a "thing" about deep water, so I really appreciate seeing it through your eyes. When we visited Orkney in 2011, we saw a spectacular "roost" between Mainland Orkney and Eynhallow Island - it was extremely windy and the racing, churning water was really visible and awe inspiring! Fabulous video thank you 💙🦋
Hello Ruth, you know what they say "never under estimate the power of water" a very interesting video. You were very lucky that ever thing worked out just right for you, I had never heard of this Whirlpool until to-day. Regards. Andrew.

Excellent video - really enjoyed this a lot!! Thanks for sharing Ruth, I really appreciate it.
Thank you for watching!
Spectacular! Thank you so much for this exciting video!
Thanks for watching Barbara!
It's funny, I always used to think Corryvreckan was near Islay due to Ardbeg naming one of their whiskies 'Corryvreckan' ha ha. Fantastic video, that's my curiosity fulfilled.
Haha I think they name a lot of Islay whiskies from nearby landmarks. Like Machir Bay from Kilchoman is named after the nearby beach
@ruthaisling Ha,ha very good point. Machir Bay is so beautiful and the whisky is even better, especially the cask strength.
This was SO exciting!
Thanks for taking us along.
Another informative video. You do go to some amazing places, and I always find your videos interesting. Great scenery and love your accent. Thanks from south Wales.
Thank you very much!
Jura is a very special place!
Wow, what a great adventure and some Islay whisky too. Canna be bad! 😊

Great work Ruth
Thank you so much!
Wow.
Just discovered your channel. Really enjoying your videos, all the best.
Awesome, thank you!
That was an exciting video, I appreciate you sharing this natural phenomenon with us. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Fabulous video thank you 💙🦋
Wow that sounds amazing too!
Hello Ruth, you know what they say "never under estimate the power of water" a very interesting video. You were very lucky that ever thing worked out just right for you, I had never heard of this Whirlpool until to-day. Regards. Andrew.
I'm glad we were in that powerful boat!
Very enjoyable podcast, and I enjoyed the journey travelling along with you through some rugged but peaceful looking hill paths. At six miles return journey fitness is definitely a requirement.
Thanks Michael!
What an interesting video. Thank you for that Ruth. 😀
