Found this because of a vinyl record I have. A recording made and signed by Captain Newt and crew. Can’t wait to visit in person next summer! I’m glad she’s still sailing
I remember as a young sailor in Camden, Maine 1981 asking Captain Jim Sharp if the anchor in the back of my pickup truck was big enough for a particular boat there in the harbour. I have always remembered his perfect reply, "yea for about 95% of the time". I went on to become the Captain of two topsail schooners John Alden's "Puritan" and later Nathaniel Herreshoff's "Mariette".
This brought back wonderful memories of sailing on the adventure. Also meeting Captain Hines and falling madly in love with him. He could charm the birds out of trees. Thank you Jim, love Pat Weiss
It was a big day in August 1988 with Gloucester inner and outer harbors filled to the gunnels with boats. My VCR at home recorded the event on WCVB while I got some distant pics as she past Thatchers Light minutes from “home”. Hopefully the dozen or so ch12 progress vids are now digital. I remember showing up with a TV camera when there was a mountain of wood from the staterooms to make way for the fish holds - thinking - they’re In it for the long haul.
I worked for Local TV ch12 and volunteered in Newburyport MA and offered a ride back the day in 1995 the sails blew out. Capt. Hines poked his cane thru the spent sails while shaking his head. I got that on tape.
In 1976 NYC OpSail was the Sch. Adventure in the parade? I made a 30min Super8 film. Killer sequence of the Eagle under full sail crossing bows with the Krusenstern motoring.
@@robertmcglinchey3347 cool story! Do you sail in Gloucester often? I'm sailing out of Parker River and Ipswich but get to Gloucester a couple times a year.
God bless you for running this museum!

Endlessly envious of a man who captained a schooner, cheers sir!
