      Eventually they’ll have to relent on beards and tight pants…no? I mean, the tight pants thing is a Tony Morris thing. No one else talks about “tight pants” do they? Who wears tight pants nowadays anyway. I mean, a JW male or female might wear tight jeans but…no one is gonna show up to the meeting or to service wearing jeans and the fashion of a good suit (for guys) having really tight pants…is that still a thing? Was it ever “a thing”? I think Tony Mortis left most of his sanity in Vietnam. Not that I make fun of him because of that. Who knows what he had to look at during the horror show any war is.
      Remember the “tight pants” skit from Saturday Night Live? Was it on SNL? I could be confused.
      Beards they have zero reason to object to. I remember way back in the day when, if you were in Bethel, you could not have any facial hair if you were a “white guy”. Not even a mustache or the “sideburns” of the 70s and early 80s. However, black and hispanic brothers could have mustaches and slightly longer sideburns. No beards. Never beards.

I was dragged all over the circuit to be in the assembly parts saying I had 10 studies!! They never even checked on the truth of it. The completion between different elders in diff halls was big back then ...and I was a prize cow. It was a lie and I smoked weed during lunch in the 10th grade everyday, lol..can't believe I'm telling the truth, but I was so pressured to be perfect and mom n dad were so proud, even traveling to all these assemblies watching me up there. My husband’s cousin was sent to Tanzania as a missionary. Things change after he decided to marry a local. No longer could he continue being a missionary. The society didn’t do shit for him.
    Back in the UK his dad had to sell his house, releasing some of the funds and giving it to his son in order for him to support his new wife back in Tanzania.
    It didn’t end there though as the wife ended up cheating on him I think with another brother while he was in the UK.
    Now they are going through a divorce. You’d think this would wake up the family and more so my husband cousin but no they are still faithful to the religion.
    All those years of dedicating his life to the org and what has he got to show? Nothing as currently he’s living with his parents, can’t see the son he has with his soon to be ex-wife and working in a supermarket working minimum wages.

    Maybe it's just my imagination, but the creepy guy that got interviewed at the end is giving me some closeted gay vibes. Maybe the reason why he got so culty is because he feels guilty for his feelings and thinks that if he manages to do everything perfectly they will eventually go away. I was in that same situation, and I used to speak the same way that he does. I was so delusional, even for a JW I was extreme. I was well on my way to becoming an elder and probably more if I hadn't woken up and realized it was all a lie.

    I'm 19 minutes in, and their body language is incongruent. They clearly are trying to make the body language go with their story, but in-congruencies are coming through, which is partly why we feel it is so fake. The man shakes his head in the negative when he is speaking of something positive, and she holds her eyebrows up for a whole sentence, not just a word or two (means: believe me!!!).
    However, as a sister I did this a lot and still do as a heathen. It is because we are not believed as easily as men. Especially in JW land, but outside JW land also.
    Meh, it is just off.
    JWs would just say, oh they must be nervous. Yeah, nervous because they are lying on one or two levels, emotionally for sure.

    Let me start by saying that I enjoy your work and wish you the absolute best going forward. I was NEVER a JW, a Catholic actually. But I came to learn of and experience this religion by way of my relatives in Puerto Rico. As a kid, that side of the family was always a joy to visit and spend quality time with, especially summer vacations. But no sooner did one cousin encounter the religion and join, did the majority of the family thereafter followed suit. And the difference was like night and day. Gone was all the laughter, fun, outings, festivities, parties, etc. In their place was nonstop conversion talk, doom & gloom end of times talk, and many MANY attempts at getting the rest of the visiting family to tag along to a Kingdom Hall. Thank goodness I never brought along any dress clothes on summer vacations out there. Eventually I had to put an end to staying with them for extended periods, opting for a hotel instead. And no sooner did I begin express my sexuality (gay male here) did they finally leave me the hell alone when I visited. Thanks very much, liked and subbed, warmest regards to you from the South Bronx in NYC.

Interestingly though (take this with 89.5% accuracy) I’m pretty sure he left that last assignment in Africa because of the difficulties of “C-word” and he was not keen on going back. It's great that you offered an understanding of his plight. He looks like the "cover boy" right now..... who knows where that will lead. He may never wake up.... It took me a long time to wake up but now looking at your reviews and other activists.... geesh the doctrines, culture, etc this religion seems to be getting crazier and crazier; how in the world did I not wake up sooner???? • @helenr4300
    @helenr4300 2 года назад

    I spent some time with a Deaf church here in UK - sign language is physical and has its own process of order and syntax, it made communion services ' he said this is my body' impactful in a new way. It was a noisy space - all the little things we hear and so consciously avoid - chair scrapping, unwrapping a sweet etc etc most there are unaware of . It was also a place with much less personal physical space - because you need someone to look at you before you 'speak' you just go ahead and tap on a shoulder in a way we wouldn't in a hearing context. The whole 2 term experience made me reflect so much on matters of communication, and how the means affects what added extra meanings are conveyed.
    The d/Deaf community is very complex, they have their own language and culture, and for many that community is important; and something that is valued as a minority culture (they would use the capital D). However deafness is a physical impairment, a difference that massively affects a person's ability to engage with the wider world around them. The cochlear ear implant has split people - should they artificially change a child so they can have better access to the majority community, but in doing so lose their Deaf culture? You can understand the tension given the sign language culture has had to fight in the past against education that focussed on lip reading and forcing the deaf to speak ( such that it outweighed the rest of any curriculum; whereas in a sign language environment the class content can be the focus rather than hours trying to to make sounds to copy what you cannot hear).
    Sorry for essay, I just find it all fascinating

    That second interview just highlights the fact the the org still thinks that despite trying to sound sympathetic, if someone is depressed or anxious that they just need to read the Bible more and pray more. It’s always your fault because you just aren’t spiritual enough.
    Seeing that jw’s have some crazy high rates of people needing to take medication for these issues, I wonder how many more would be taking them if they didn’t follow this advice and actually got real help? So sad.

    • @Saureasauron
      @Saureasauron 2 года назад

      Oh yeah, JWs are definitely discouraged from seeking professional help when it comes to mental health. But I noticed that even traditional medicine is sometimes looked down upon too. Usually, there are several people in each congregation that are into health-related MLMs or practice «alternative» medicine. So, you are kinda expected to approach those individuals first, and only go to the doctor if their «methods» didn't help.
