1987 VS 2003 VS 2012 VS 2018! Turtle Cartoon Battle Royale!
Everything in the TMNT 2012 version is incredibly dark
@@icefire2104 same with 2003 but even more
Master splinter 's death, the same as it ever was.
word
I always hated that Master Splinter dies, especially in the 2012 series, but passing on the sensei role to Leonardo was good development on his part, and even after the spirits from the Nether World invaded Splinter's ghost was still on the turtles side which meant even in death Hamato Yoshi is still one of the best characters in the TMNT franchise!
Dude I said the samething.
Facts!
300th Like. Nice.
The episode in season 5 the story of splinter with the baby turtles, knowing what happened in season 4. Makes one cry every single time
A sensei dying plays an important part in many Japanese stories
Splinter's death in the 2012 series made me bawled all day when the season 4 episode Requiem premiered. I know he died in the season 3 finale but his actual death made me bawled all day. It was the darkest episode ever and destroyed me. I felt so bad for the turtles especially Leonardo 💔💔
I was visiting my grandparents in Florida that day and it was impossible to focus on anything. Not to mention that I almost woke everyone up with my scream of terror
If you ever find it, don't listen to my audiobook version of TMNT then. I make some tragic choices and act them out realistically. I'm broken.
It was nighttime when I witnessed Splinter’s murder. My whole world fell apart and I cried so hard, especially at his funeral. TMNT 2012 was a big part of my childhood, and seeing him get taken away was a devastating blow to my heart.
Same here! I could not stop crying after seeing that ending! 😭
I REALLY hate Master Splinter being murdered by Super Shredder in the 2012 TMNT. That scene was definitely and totally Dark, Gruesome and Horrifying to watched. 😭😭😭😭
Ich liebe master splinter
From 2012, the most disturbing and darkest episodes were The Buried Secrets, The Deadly Venom and The Fourtold Trap. It was rather disturbing to see turtles, April and Casey consumed by creepy Mom-Thing creature or poisoned by the brainwashed snake-Karai, or being put into four Saw-themed death traps that almost killed them. And also, the three darkest episodes from 2003 series are the Darkness Within, The Bad Day and The Scion of the Shredder.
Let's not forget that one episode in season 5 of the 2012 series where Jei, who can manipulate dreams, gives the four turtles all the same nightmare where they each get picked off one by one...
@Livvy Grossman Or the Squirrelanoid episode, the episode where Karai mutant s into a snake hybrid, the Within the the Woods episode in Season 3, the episode where April's 'Mom' turns out to be a Kraang experiment and eats the turtles, Darkest Plight, The two part season 4 finale, ect.
@@catrakitten THOSE TOO. Oh, and Parasitica, that one was creepy too
@@livvydraws-v7n Tmai (Tell me about it). And they say that that the 2012 series isn't as dark as the 2003 series. 😨😬😖🙄
Ninja turtles: The next mutation should've been the #1 darkest moment.
Even as a kid, seeing the 1987 series Baxter Stockman being banished to that limbo dimension for the rest of his life without even his alien computer friend for company, seriously disturbed me.
Leo looks like Morpheus more than he does neo
13:39 Is so dark I was crying in my sleep
What about that one episode in TMNT 2012 where April's "mum" was some weird alien thingy
I grew up with the 2012 series, and it remains as my favorite show of all time. I recently got the dvds that I didn’t have and watched it all in order. Still gives me shivers when I see these dark moments from a show that I used to watch when I was still in my single digits. Don’t understand how 6-7 year old me enjoyed mutant turtles’ suffering.

Same, my older sister actually made me a mug with the 2012 TMNTs because I was so into it!
I was 13 when this show started airing and I watched it throughout it's entire run on TV so I literally went through my teenage years along with those turtles so this show means so much to me and I 1000% agree with you that it's my favorite show of all time as well and it really hurts my head realizing that next month will be 10 years since the first episode premiered
The 2012 series was without a doubt my favorite TMNT cartoon. It was dark, funny, action packed, and just pure awesome.
However, the reason I see this as the best is simple: source materials. This cartoon took different aspects of different parts of the TMNT franchise weather be comics, other shows, movies or video games and found away to incorporate it into the series. Such as when they included Bebop and Rocksteady, after only appearing in the 80's cartoon. Same when they turned Shredder into the Super Shredder. It also did it's own path, such as not only have Splinter be Hamato Yoshi instead of his pet, but also be the birth father of Karai.
And when it went dark, it got really dark! Splinter's Death, Donnie exploding to atoms, the freaking Mutant Apocalypse series finale!
All these reasons and more are why I find the 2012 series the best incarnation of the Turtles ever.
Agreed , also has amazing animation and atmosphere, like the 2007 movie
Like the first live action movie, it also did a an excellent job combining the lightheartedness of the '87 series with the darker comics and '03 series.
2003 better

@@bigmonke1449 it’s his opinion and the 2012 series was good throughout each season
I grew up with the 2012 series and seeing all those dark moments still makes my heart skip a beat. Personally, I’m surprised that TMNT 2012 beat TMNT 2003 for the most dark moments on this list. Actually, anyone else more surprised that an episode of the 1987 series made the list?
Watch mojo is very uneducated with the 2003 series

@@spinjitzumasterfalcon hey! What's up?
@@spinjitzumasterfalcon He forgot the flashback with Splinters mom leaving to face the Shredder in Rise.
I still think the season 4 of the 2003 show is the most disturbing non-comic TMNT content to date. Don getting turned into a monster, Leo’s depression arc, the Baxter stockman episode that got pulled from airing in the US, Casey getting ptsd of the purple dragons killing his dad
4kids literally had to step in because the show at that point was becoming too mature and dark for the younger audience they were targeting
Let’s not forget SAINW
@@Rika24 that’s season 3 but yea another pretty grim one
One of the few times I think 4kids made the right call seriously that Baxter Stockman episode was fucking messed up. I loved it but seriously man where was the line.
As a kid I grew up on the tmnt 80's show, but when tmnt 2003 came out when I was in high school I was blown away at the writing, the accurate portrayal yet, evolution of the 4 turtles, and the action was pretty damn great. A lot of atmosphere in that show. It had a few bangers in the games too like the GBA and DS one.
Yeah. Season 6 and 7 are 4Kid's way of not dealing with complaints anymore.
The darkest moment I won't never forget is the 2012 TV Series when Super Shredder has killed Master Splinter and the episode from the 2003 TV Series when Donatello sent into the future.

Splinter’s death in 2017 was also very graphic.
When splinter literally stabs him from behind we literally not only get an impact and reaction shot we legit see the blade protruding through splinters body. Legit one of the darkest things I have ever seen in animation, adult or not.
Ditto. But I’d take it your referring to the death in season 3? The actual one in season 4 was in 2017

@@icefire2104 I absolutely agree. In my personal opinion I still strongly believe that the 2012 TMNT series is my favorite show of all time. There's just too much great memories I had with it as I watched every episode when it aired
@NightSlayer448 Or most of the first few episodes of Season 3 when they're in April's old home where the episodes were all horror themed
I love that show so much!
I grew up with the '03 version.
Growing up, I hated Baxter Stockman with a burning passion. Watching as an adult, I just feel sorry for him. His story hits different once you actually see the "Baxter's Body" episode. It literally goes over all the trauma he's suffered in his life, and at the end of all of it, all he wanted was death
I agree that his story arc is indeed sad HOWEVER throughout the years i become more convinced that his arrogance brought him this faith. Like Oruko Saki said: “your arrogance exceeded only by your inability to learn from your punishment”
He could have served the Shredder like he was paid to do but choose time and time again to betray him as he wasn’t forced to work for him
I hated Baxter in the beginning but I too feel nothing but empathy for him seeing him getting tortured. That guy just could've catch a break any time soon. Watching the episode where his new body decayed on him was horrifying yet also sad. Seeing his life in the past, I no longer hated him. He's one of those villains who also just broken inside too.
INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE😀
His episode was so sad. Just perhaps a person lost when he lost his mom. He just turned dark. Even April, who had every reason, to probably detest tried to help him towards the end. He was pretty much driven to insanity for the most part.
Ich liebe Baxter Stockmann
Rise Movie: (all these brutal dark moments)
1) alternate future where future Leo tells future Mikey to kill himself to create a portal
2) future all turtles and everyone dies
3) Leo getting beat down by Krang
4) Raph choking Leo
Poor Splinter just cannot catch a break. He's like the Kenny McCormick of the franchise.
I think the 2012 series is the only incarnation where he dies, though.

I remember watching the 2003's version of TMNT when I was a little kid, it was so cool and very fantastic. It may have had dark moments in that iteration comparing to some of the other TMNT shows, but it was still an awesome nonetheless.
I grew up with the 2012 series and a lot of moments really hit me hard. The Mutant Apocalypse arc is one that I dread on revisiting because of how dark and painful it is. It hurts a lot to know what happened. Same with the Rise Movie. Thankfully in the 2012 series, that was in a separate timeline. But Splinter's death always leaves a pain in my heart.
No, the Mutant Apocalypse is still canon and the real finale of the show) This was confirmed by the creators of the show (see Nickelodeon's book by Ciro Nieli: Art of TMNT)
It's in an alternate universe. So non canon

I prefer the Season 3 to final Season Leo’s voice (I mean come on it’s Seth Green aka Chris Griffin from Family Guy.)
That finale screwed me up for days after first watching it
@@icefire2104 he got a new voice? I thought since he was injured his voice was different? I didn’t know they changed it completely. What was the tweet about anyway?
@@quinnhouk5369 Yeah he got a new voice for season 3-5. Seth’s wife is the reason why he played leo for the rest of the show and because something happened to the original voice actor for Leo. Also because the creator or someone who worked on the show mentioned that kids are smart and they would notice the difference between Leo’s voice so they gave an explanation to why Leo’s voice is different which was his throat got damaged during his fight with the foot in the season 2 finale and because Casey was the one to notice/ask why Leo sounded so different when he finally talked after being in a coma for months.

Especially the movie, YEESH!
Foreeall rise is so underrated
What about when Casey turned on the trash compactor w/ Shredder inside in the 1990 movie? It was even repeated in the 2012 series after Splinter's death.
Both are fucked up in their own special way too! In the movie, the fact that it is almost played as a joke is... disturbing in its own right, especially since no one comments on it. Then in the cartoon, the cold, ruthlessness in TEENAGE Casey's voice and face when he pulls the lever is chilling!
This is the best movie i watch in my life now i'm broken because i didn't finish it😒. And hate this 2018 shit😑
Nothing wrong with the 2018 show/movie. Y’all just hated the styles and the show never got a chance.
I think another 2012 tmnt dark moment was when Donnie almost killed Don Vizioso. The fact that Donnie almost lost himself from grief and revenge.
Today is the day _Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie_ releases on Netflix, and after watching it, I enjoyed it. Obviously the animation for it and the show as a whole speaks for itself; it is bliss! And while it doesn’t really do much to bring old fans of previous iterations of the franchise in to watch it, I still really like what it set out to do. The show is generally hated on for being comedy-focused, but it isn’t bad, by any means. Plus, when the comedy is high, it’s not afraid to get dark and serious.
im an old tmnt fan and once i gave rise a chance and allowed it to do its own thing i loved it. people just didn’t understand it as an origin story and expected it to follow the same formula right off the bat. also the story the creators wanted to tell was much more dark and serious than the one nick allowed them to (nick thought 2012 got too dark for kids which is why they had rise lean into the comedy) so im glad Netflix allowed them to make the movie so we could get a glimpse into what we could’ve had. and it did (and is still doing) really well so here’s hoping for season 3 🤞
2012 tmnt was my whole childhood and it was amazing 💚🐢
Even before the final 3 seasons, the original series had some unexpectedly dark moments, like Baxter Stockman's transformation into a fly man being rather painful and that we could see his skeleton in the process.
It's a shame you didn't include the comics, because the IDW series includes a scene where Donatello's shell is smashed open with a sledgehammer by Rocksteady, and he's left to bleed to death. Or the subsequent storyline in which a copy of his consciousness is left in a robot, and starts going slowly insane.
Or everything that happened in The Last Ronin
IDW Mutagen Man is also pretty dark
2012's TMNT was the MOST Darkest!

Grew up with the 2012 Series. And because of that, it remains my favorite, shit was dark though, it did not stop itself from delving into darker topics and scenes. I’d like to watch the other series’s too.

YeSSS i love rise so much❤
I love the 2012 version of teenage mutant ninja turtles. It’s my favorite incarnation of the tmnt, but that’s probably because I’m biased towards it. I grew up with it.
I grew up with 1987 series, and the 2012 series is still my favorite. It did a great job mixing together lightheartedness with seriousness while mining the entire franchise's lore up to that point for good stories and characters. It also had two different crossovers with the 1987 series that were both much better than what the 2003 series tried with "Turtles Forever."
I grew up with the 2003 version and 2012 is my favourite. Although if Rise were given more episodes and proper ending, I might like Rise more.
2012 had to be the best in my eyes for everything
THIS GUY REALLY PUT SPLINTER’S DEATH ABOVE SAME AS IT NEVER WAS
The 03 is most definitely the darkest but the 2012 series had the balls to kill splinter twice and the second time he stayed dead
This is why TMNT 2012 needs a 6th season for more darker and edgier moments like Spider-Man: The New Animated Series.
We all know the TMNT 2012_17 was the best💙❤🧡💜🖤.
Never expected Alopex to chop off Tiger Claw's arm
The 2003 episode “Bad Day” should’ve been an honorable mention as well. Definitely up there as one of the darker episodes of that series despite it being a dream, in essence. First half hits hard!
While I’ve never been a TMNT fan, it’s the 2012 iteration that made me wanna watch every episode of it that series

2012 TMNT was my first foray into the Ninja Turtles franchise. I was honestly impressed with it. I was genuinely surprised by how dark it could get at times. Yet I loved how it didn't shy away from the fact that violence is very, very real
Splinters death was even more brutal then described since after being impaled he was tossed off the building too. Not sure why didn't show and say anything about that part.

Same As It Never Was was a game changing moment. Especially since it was followed by Exodus, where Shredder made his bid to become the space faring conqueror again. With SAINW fresh in mind, the stakes were higher than ever since we knew exactly what would happen if the Turtles lost.
The Mad Max arc of TMNT 2012 was terrible though.
Remember in the 2012 apocalyptic future episodes, when raph and Donnie literally turned Casey's skull into a bomb!! How can that not be number one?
Splinter’s death broke me when I watched the show
Splinters Tod hat mir die Gefühle gebrochen Weil der Abschied von Splinter mich traurig gemacht hat 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💔
I think the Leo vs Raph battle should be on the list in place of some of these other ones. In being only an honorable mention, it cuts short the fact of Raph splitting Leo's katanas, which leaves him to be captured and tortured, arguably more powerfully written than Splinters capture.
Raphael realized that he screwed up.
This is not the “darkest moments” because all the dark moments would come from the idw comics and thats it.
I would have tiger claw losing his arm and a possessed April killing Donnie on the list instead of honorable mentions since to me those were pretty dark and yep Baxter Decaying body is messed up
Sad that neither Leo nor Raph’s sacrifices in the rise movie were featured. Not that dark, but definitely darker than killing holograms.
What do you think TMNT would be like if these dark moments never happened?

The 2012 series of the ninja turtles will always remain as my favorite but when Splinter got killed by Super Shredder, I was heartbroken. Although it was satisfying to see Leo take him down in the finale!
You guys forgot Turtles Forever where Shredder from 2003 universe nearly destroys the entire multiverse and you literally see people being erased from existence. The turtles from 80s, 2003 and mirage original comic universe prevail while we see the technodromes energy blast destroy Shredder from 2003 universe and the turtles restore the rest of the multiverse and go home to their own respected universes.
The 80s TMNT did have darker moments when Dregg came. Another dark moment I remember is when Leonardo was still transforming into his monstrosity form. Dregg even mentioned though he was back to normal, there's still a chance Leo will never be able to return to his normal mutant self. That's still a chilling reminder there too.
Speaking of transforming, another dark moment that should've been mentioned in 2003 Donatello transforming into a creature. It's sad because the rest of family and close friend Leatherhead felt really helpless seeing their smartest but also gentlest brother becoming an out of control beast. That's dark too, if not heartbreaking too.
Another dark moment I'd say is in "Worlds Collide 2" of the 2003 series, where the Turtles were captured and how they meet Agent Bishop the first time. The Turtles were strapped and imprisoned with no chance of escaping. Had Splinter, April, and Casey not gone to find them, Bishop would've dissected the Turtles. Not only that, they discovered Leatherhead had been an victim captured too. That poor mutant croc had suffered tortured under that sociopathic monster Bishop for a long time he was captured and it effected him badly too. I'm happy Leatherhead survived, but he suffered.
