I’m of the opinion that Gohan’s whole mental state and personality shifts when he transforms into his higher forms (i.e. SSJ2, Ultimate, Beast). When he’s not in those transformations, he likes being at peace. When he’s in those transformations however, he flips a switch that brings out his Saiyan competitiveness. That’s all just head canon though, so take it with a grain of salt.

The aiming higher together line is a reference to their fight just before the Tournament of Power in the DBS anime. Even at the end of their fight Goku says this to Gohan, acknowledging him.
Hopefully, Gohan can keep this streak going, which has begun since his training for the TOP, of achieving his own way of strength, that of a protector of his family, while being, well, his goofy scholar self.

DB Super Heroes brings an interesting element to Gohan and training. Beast isn't something he unlocks by instinct, it isn't a power obtained when backed into a corner and forced past his limit. He talks earlier in the film about studying ki, how it works, the effects it has on the body. When using Beast, he says it's something he's been working on. Goku obtained Ultra Instinct by accident and has worked to master and refine it. But Beast? Gohan obgained that by careful study and resesrch.
All fun and games until Gohan goes on a week long vacation, loses all his strength, and then gets his neck broken again by Recoome Max, who has been buffed enough to effortlessly slap around Beast form.
