Amy Dacyczyn was a legend back in the day of her newsletter, appearances on talk shows, and her The Tightwad Gazette Books! Homemakers all over learned to wash and dry our ziplock bags to resuse them again, how to get the last ketchup or salad dressings from the bottom of the bottle and save our aluminum foil to use again, as well as use coupons from this lady!!! She showed us how shopping at thrift shops could have us wearing clothes and brands that were unaffordable to most of us otherwise! And she did it all with a Great sense of humour! I subscribed to her newsletters and eagetly waited fior its arrival! I have all of her books and as I still read comments on frugal YT channels that many others including myself, still have our books and all these years later still pull them out to read them time and time again! Her Tightwad Gazette books are still commented about as Thrift store or yard sale,"Finds!" Mothers learned how to take the apple their toddlers took one bite out of and Amy taught us how easy it was to turn the rest of that apple into an Apple Crisp! And how to stick diaper pins into a bar of soap and then the pins would glide through the cloth diaper much easier! When disposable diapers came out and in the beginnings the tabs that you fastened the diaper with would be left with in your hand with the slightest tug! Amy told us it was ok to put a piece of tape to repair the torn off tab! As young Wives, Mothers, Grandmothers and Homemakers she had us thinking of ways to not waste, what little we may have had! I think she could have another best selling book if she did it again, for these times we are in now, trying to learn how to stretch our dollars and navigate through what most of our younger generations have no ideas about! Myself, I am now a Retired Senior, but my opinion is that schools, taking the Home Economics School Course that we were required to take for a year in High School back in the 1970's, was a bad decision to stop! My own Mother was divorced, worked full time as a Nurse and even though she taught me many life skills! My Home EE classes, taught me how to use a sewing machine, sew on a button, hem our jeans, choose a piece of material, pin a pattern to it, cut it out, and sew something to wear! cook banana bread, make a recipe, make meal plans, balance a checkbook, make a budget, how to read the utility bills, we learned what interest rates were, and savings accounts and do the laundry, and so much more that I am sure I am forgetting to mention! Good Lessons and Good Memories! Donna in the NE GA mountains

I'm glad other people out there still read TTG! I just passed my three books (which were the collected newsletters) on to my daughter. I have to admit I still squash the TP because of that tip. As you said, it was meant to help households with kids and pets, and it does work for that. Also, I don''t know if it makes a difference, but for people with hand strength issues, the tip suggested stepping on the TP, if I recall correctly. That makes a quick job of it.

Keep a plastic cup near your bathroom sink. Fill it with warm water before you pee (or while you pee). Rinse yourself when you're finished. (Just pour the water towards your lady parts. It goes into the toilet.) Pat dry with an old washcloth. You can reuse the drying cloth multiple time before throwing it in the laundry. Saves a ton of TP.

Before placing the TP on the holder, I flatten it, then turn it halfway and flatten again. The core is then a square shape. It turns a lot easier than flattened, but still has a "stopping point" for kids, animals, or if you have a TP holder that's at a bit of a slant, and like to keep unrolling :D

I used to count the minimum number of sheets that I needed. Another method is to use an old squirt bottle and small towel, which I must say is good for hygiene. and if you like this method, there are squirt bottles made for this purpose that you use after childbirth and the bottle size is comfortable to use.

I tried that tip only once too. Frustrating. A better tip for those who live with family who overuse tp is to put out tp rolls that are half finished. When it appears there is only half a roll left, people will consciously conserve. And if a little kid or a pet gets a hold of it, it's only half a roll. This works with shampoo, dish detergent, soap too.

I was a subscriber to Amy Dacyczyn's Tightwad Gazette newsletter in the early 1990s, and later bought all three books (used!)). I was in my 30s and working, pre-children, and had been raised in a frugal home but had strayed! The Tightwad books changed my life, and that is no exaggeration. The newsletter/books were informative and fun. I began going to garage sales, cut my expenses, lived on half of my pay and saved the other half, etc. When I married later in the 1990s, we had a budget wedding and did not go into debt except for a home mortgage. When I had my two kids, I saved big money by buying them pre-owned clothes and toys, in excellent condition, so I could be a stay-at-home mom during their early years. My frugal habits and continual saving I learned from Amy enabled me to pay off our home mortgage when our first child was a high school sophomore. I cannot count the many ways frugal practices like Amy's have benefitted my life. I clicked on your video because of the Tightwad reference!

This is to funny! I use what doesn’t stick to me and leave tp on my private areas. I like Cottonelle and Charmin. I keep my costs low by sales/rebates/coupons and by knowing my body. I use 4 blocks for urine and 5-6 blocks for poo. That was another of her TP tips to not just wrap it around your hand to the depth of a fluffy quilt, think about how much you really need to do the job.
I love the TightWad Gazette. Every monthly newsletter issue had at least one tip that saved me money. Though there were specifics, she emphasized concepts mostly. I looked forward to it every month. I actually had one of my tips accepted for the newsletter and signed a release for my tip to be used in Book 2. In my house, you're rationed to 4 squares per job. And don't buy the cheapest toilet rolls, the quality is not good in the UK. Also, I don't think we can get single ply, I've not seen or heard of it. And quilted bungs your toilet up.

  • @ladywytch129

I only do this tip because I have cats that LOVE to play with the tp roll if they get in the bathroom 😂We keep the door closed, but I need it open for cleaning and they always have to join me.
Anyways, I have a tip that takes time but does work. Buy a decent two-ply pack of tp. Save the cardboard rolls from a few of them and spend a few minutes separating the layers and rerolling them around the tubes. Two for the price of one! Now, this is the most tedious thing ever. And you will absolutely wonder if it's worth it, especially if everyone knows what you are doing, lol. But if you are really needing to stretch your pennies, or the stores are out of tp and you know you are running low, this will totally work!

This was a funny video. I’ve never heard of the TightWad Gazette. Please do share tips from there.
One thing we do is we have 2 rolls of toilet paper: 1 of those 1000 sheet rolls for #1 and another higher quality, soft one for #2. I think overall, this works for us as this feels like it’s less wasteful. We don’t have kids so that’s not an issue. I even geeked out and have an Excel spreadsheet on the cost/sq. feet & cost/sheet so I know which brands are the best deals in each category.
