- It's time to harvest and then cut back the tomato and pepper plants and make way for seed sowing for autumn. As always at this time of year, I change up the staging in the greenhouse to make it suit my needs over autumn and winter.
So join me as I change up the greenhouse, prune back the plants that have passed and sow some winter lettuce, winter (spring) onions, and more broccoli rabe and we'll also get potting on the previous sowings.

Great video. It is tough saying goodbye to plants, but, as you show, it is often a good call to make room for plants that will do better. Right plant, right place, right season.

Not right now it isn’t. Time to start the spring scarifying and feeding routine
The mulch caps work better with bamboo in and loped round with the tomato in the middle, let’s the tomato grow but holds it. The mulch caps work well for companion planting. I put marigolds, nasturtiums, basil, etc on them. Got all my plans for next year; building a cold frame, some shelving, storage for my shed (I built this year), a new plum tree and some new ferns. Absolutely one of the best times of year; planning and preparing for next year, still got plenty of things in flower and spring bulb planting. A tip for you and saved me a few time, use Leca clay pebble in your trays, if you leave your plants too long roots will grow through the leca and does become pot bound. It’s really good for watering.
I'm getting better at appreciating it. I used tk dread autumn but I'm learning to see its good side 😀
My peppers are just beginning to bear ripe and red. Kind of small, but tasty. They, the Zucchini, and the English cucumbers are the only bearers still producing in the garden.
Nice video, Eli. When I saw you were wearing a sweatshirt, I had to laugh. Here in hot, smoky Redding, I’m still wearing my tank tops, waiting for the days to cool so I can wear my t-shirts once again.
It's still not too bad here. Comfortable during the day but getting cold at night. Height 5c a few nights
Omg 😱 I so have pepper envy, mine surprisingly were crap and it was super hot here this summer so I thought they would love it. I have lots of kale plants and carrots in my poly tunnel. I also have a few peppers I’ve cut right down to try overwintering them ( silly things are flowering). Hope Kate is sticking with her photography. ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe ladies

Was a bit emotional over the clearing out of the tomatoes and pepper plants . Hard one that. Great to start afresh though and so useful to see how you use your benches. So much to learn thx great video 😊

Those are some beautiful tomatoes & peppers. I’m In the US (south Louisiana) p& majority of people only eat the green bell peppers which have a bitter bite to them. I’ve learned to let them actually ripped to yellow, orange, or red for that sweet pepper taste. Love your videos & the info you’re providing. Thank you for taking the time to teach people

Spring onions are brilliant, I've not done overwinter ones, but I've sown them in spring for the past few years now and they are fantastic - hardly need any looking after and you can pull as many as you want at a time once their ready. I'm trying out windy hardy leeks, and I'm going to look to see if I can plant some garlic and onions in October.
my 2 long red marconi sweet pepper plants has still got all green peppers on them, I've harvest just 2 red ones so far haha!
But my cherry tomatoes have done so well, I've been getting a bowlful pretty much every day of them and still lots left, I will start taking ones that are no so ripe off soon as the weather is set to change next week.
I'm quite excited about the spring onions 😀😀😀

I find it interesting that slugs get into the greenhouse and up shelves to pots - thus using copper tape. What’s the large plate in the middle of the grass? Drainage grate? I’ve never seen this in past videos. I tried over wintering plants in the house, which it did flower the second wee inside, but aphids exploded from it all over the plant killing it instantly because no predators inside to eat them.
Ah thats a stone slab that normally has a big hydrangea pot on it. It's super windy here just now and the pots get blown over so we've had to move it to a sheltered spot.
I took down my toms last weekend, still need to remove the pots but need somewhere for the spent compost (plan to use it store dahlia tubers over winter.
Good plan.... then a wee refresh in spring and you have compost ready to use?
@@eliandkate plenty in the compost bin and that stuffs rocket fuel due to the duck poo that goes in it. I use it to mulch fruit trees in spring and the rubbarb. Probably get some ready to mix in with shop bought stuff

I think I'd already seen your overwintering video... but it was good timing watching this one now as I was debating if it's worth keeping my tomato plants in the greenhouse (I have two cherry tomatoes that never got to the point of fruiting in my raised bed in there). I'll leave them there and maybe plant them out next season.
I also found out that there are different types of Hebe... someone near me is giving away two tree varieties but I might look into getting some for hedging as my front yard hedge plants just aren't growing fast enough... so thanks again for the help with those :D

Great video as always. It is interesting how much our seasons of gardening change over time. Do you have a particularly favorite season or time of year in your garden/greenhouse?
Hmmmmm ive actually changed a lot over the last few years. I used to really dread autumn and winter. Here it's just so dark, cold and wet all the time. It's quite miserable. But I've learned to appreciate how important the different seasons are. Plus, the weather is changing.... I can really see it.
Favourites though, I love april through to July....that change of spring to summer when it's long, bright days and everything is starting to grow. That's when I'm most smiley ☺
I was interested to hear you are able to reuse your Quadgrow matting, mine were so intergrown with roots I couldn't clean them so sadly had to throw them away...maybe you have a trick??
Oh mine are too. I clean them beat I can then leave them to dry. By the time I need them again I can get most of that off them.
Fab video :) what do you do with the old tomato root balls? Mine are very compact with roots and no excess compost to recycle or use as mulch. Thinking they’re for the green bin unless you know of a better use for them?
I chop mine up an put them into the compost. Basically all garden waste gets composted in our garden.
My peppers 8 on plant still green apart from one, should I just take them off and put them on window sill? Also my quad grow is the same as your new one and I didn’t get wee plug things so can use them separately- can you advise where to get them? Please.
Loved seeing you sewing new seeds and potting on, makes me want to Chuck everything out and do the same.
Whether to cut back your plants depends on your temps. If you can keep them above 20c they should ripen up. If not you might just have tk use green peppers this year 😀
The quadgrows aren't meant to be used separate. Hence they don't advertise the plugs. I think you can get them if you contact them though. Try mentioning that you see me using them in videos so they know what you mean.
I guess you compost your soil from the tomatoes and such. I'm always worried I'll introduce things like blight so I have composted but never reused for the same plants. I save as a sort of soil improver elsewhere in the garden. Do you reuse yours for the same things if so have you seen any problems?
I don't compost the soil as its already composted down but I do reuse it. I mix in some fresh compost to add back some of the organisation matter and reuse in pots etc.
I've never had blight but I hear folk saying blight can't survive in soil so it's safe to compost plants that ha been blighted and to reuse the soil.

I reuse most of my compost.
I sieve it to take out any stuff I don't want and to check for pests, then I reuse it, usually with a bit more fresh compost mixed through to replace the organic matter that's been lost over the season.
Do you have a link for your green and red potting tray, and the sieve you use to remove sticks and such from your potting soil? Thanks.

I’ve got the same staging as you they are great , I see your sowing new seeds inside the greenhouse when do you clean the inside of your greenhouse do you move it all out or leave it till next year ? Wish I’d got peppers the same size as yours mine were all small still nice to eat though 😀 many thanks for another great video Eli
Hmmmmm normally I clean it in Jan. I empty it out and give I a good clean. There at least one video on it 😀😀😀

I was just about to search through to see if I had missed a 'greenhouse cleanout' video. Thanks for saving me the trouble. I tend to do mine at this time of the year, because it's not FREEEEZING yet, and there's not too much left to empty out before I put in my tender/exotic palms and whatever I want to start off in there. I want as much light in there as possible overwinter, because mine is a fairly small north-facing garden. Horrible job whatever time of the Autumn/Winter you do it in, but it looks and feels so good afterwards!
Horrendous job. I hate it but it hasn't been as bad with the glass greenhouse. Still sucks though.

Jealous of that foldable staging! I’m building a greenhouse this fall/early winter using old windows, and I’m going to figure out how to build foldable staging myself (not a common item in this area of the US) 🪚🔨
There are a few videos with folk showing their design for building their own. Should be great when you're all finished 😀😀😀
Ah, me too. We actually just received our greenhouse and the skeleton is standing, but still a lot of work ahead. This is all a little overwhelming at this point, lol
I just got out of my basement, where I constructed a greenhouse table out of old pallets, but now I need to figure out how to do the legs. Next on my list in spring, is to build some raised beds.
I am so excited. I will need to do loads of research what I can actually plant in a greenhouse in november!

I actually don't have light fittings. Those lights are plastic cheapo battery powered party lights 😀

I call it a potting tray or a greenhouse tidy.

Well it usually empties in a bout a week, so I'd be adding a brand new lot. But when it's colder or the plants are slower it doesn't empty as quickly. Then I just wait until it empties before adding more.
Just because I measure feed directly into the unit, so topping up would mean I couldn't work out how much feed was needed

I'm late to the party...but I see you have copper tape on your tomato containers. I live in Sitka, Alaska and we have a terrible slug problem. I'm betting you have a similar issue.....can you share your strategies for this?

Yup very wet climate here so lots of slugs and snails.
Copper tape has proven great as a deterrent on my pots.
Other than that it’s just about picking them off and disposing if them when I find them
@@eliandkate so I’m going to sound squeamish……is there a humane way of disposing of them…..after making the mistake of wearing open toed sandals in my early gardening days…I sort of have developed slug PTSD.

To be honest, with gardening, its the outdoors, it's nature... you kinda have to accept that you are in their home and you can try to discourage or reduce the best you can, but pest are gonna be part of it.
When I started I wouldn't even touch the "dirt" cause I had such a thing about beastie... but over the years I've grown to accept it's all part of things.
