I am 15, my father told me of the prog rock bands like van der graaf generator, king crimson, genesis, elp, etc.
At first, I did not like but, when i listen again I had start to like more and each time more.
I did search about prog bands and discover the actual prog bands of metal, and showed to my father. He liked, gets happy to know that still exists prog.
Now, we will go see a Dream Theater concert on Jul 17 (they will come to Portugal) with my brother, age 13, who starts enjoying too :D

I am definitely a fan and enjoy each group as they musically represent that time of Dream Theater's personality and creative spirit. Bravo to all !! This video came out during the Original Band I gave the most to, who everyone else in the band was also a progressive rock geek and loved “Images & Words”. I remember the first time I brought the “VHS Tape” (😱) to practice, thinking we’d watch a song or two. We ended up watching the *entire thing* twice through and not playing a note of our own, which was very surprising as our rehearsal schedule was as tight as a DT guitar riff/guitar & keyboard unison riff/guitar & keyboard harmony riff/guitar, keyboard & bass harmony riff... 😉 _(aka we didn’t screw around when it came to practicing, which showed once we started to play live and in the recording of our demos, the backing track most of the time between only 2-to-3 run-throughs.)_
...we were also *_amazed_* with both the songs from “When Dream And Day Unite”, which we also hadn’t heard a lick of, as well as the pre-release versions of “To Live Forever” & “Puppies On Acid” _(the initial version of “The Mirror” main riff.)_ This, along with the “Live At The Marquee” EP & “When Dream And Day Unite” very much kept us occupied until “Awake” came out, as well as forming a large portion of my favorite period of the bands’s: “Images & Words” / “I&W: Live In Tokyo” & “Live At The Marquee” / “Awake” / “A Change Of Seasons” EP / “Falling Into Infinity” & “Hollow Years” EP. To me, all of the above is classic, *pure* Dream Theater while IMO, they started their downslide - SFaM, while huge when it came out mainly for being JR’s first recording with the band & their securing their Producer-less freedom from the recordings (which I believe is perhaps their biggest mistake as a band to not have a set of “Outside Ears” to listen and put in his or her 2 cents on the material & recording).
I also wish Derek Sherinian had more than 1 album to show of his skills in the band. While a great lyricist, Kevin Moore’s keyboard patches were pulled straight from the ‘80s and to the best of my knowledge did not use *any* “real” Keyboards. On the other hand, Sherinian added *real* Hammond B3s, Fender Rhodes & Wurlitzer Electric Pianos and his 1977 Yamaha C9 Conservatory Series Grand Piano into his “Sound Library” And when taking on modern electronic keyboards, for FII her worked closely with Korg on the then-groundbreaking “Trinity” series of keyboards (and with it his defining “Monster Lead” patch \m/), and has continued to use Korg’s “latest & greatest” keyboards such as the Korg Kronos as of 2018. He’s also a high-level endorsee of Clavia’s “Nord” keyboards. All of the above show a musician who is set up to use both older “classic” sounds as well as modern, cutting-edge keyboards and sounds. Compared to Rudess, whose majority of tones come from electronic keyboards and *not* the _”Real World Keyboards”_ and whose patches sink into the mixes of post-1999 albums due to the lack of dedicated, professional talent behind the mixing board, Derek simply leaps off whatever musical project he’s a part of, whether it be backing Yngwie Malmsteen or Billy Idol, his “Band Projects” such as “Sons Of Apollo”, “Black County Communion” or “Planet X” (the most exciting and unique Instrumental “fusion” Band since the heyday of the genre in the 1970s)... of which they *all* have extremely different sonics and “vibes”. And as DT started to get heavier starting with 6DOIT, which Jordan has clearly stated he is not a fan of... honestly, can anyone imagine just how amazing “Train Of Thought” would have been with Derek and his fall heavier influences, style and tonality of playing?
