- Having success in the reef keeping hobby and taking care of our aquariums is not easy, but how do we know we are on the right track? In this episode of RealReefingTV I reveal 5 signs of success with a saltwater reef tank. These are not all 100% guaranteed signs but they are great indicators that your tank is on the right track. They can also tell you that something is off if you don't see them.

Just recently discovered your channel! Awesome videos! Keep it up, man!
Thanks for the positive feedback I appreciate it!
Our tank is reasonably young, but according to those five things to observe, our tank seems to be doing ok. Thank you so much.
Another great video ! 👍
Thanks!
Great tips bro!
Thanks!
Great tips😎
Good tips :)
Just found this today. Quite a relief. We have almost all 5 :)
Nice great job!
I’m having growth issues now!! 😭 Thanks for the tips. Just getting into saltwater and these are definitely some great indicators. I’ve got algae but it’s not coraline 😬
Almost 2k subs already, get that momentum!
Thanks Alex you're pretty much a day one realreefer
great update
Thanks!
Nice video man still love the content. Dont have any coraline algea yet but definitely see a lot more copepods/sponges coming out off the live rock and a lot of great polyp extension. So glad I have some things right lol
That's what it's all about! It's so rewarding to see our tanks thriving!
@@RealReefingTV really is tho. Thank U for amazing content again
My 2 gallon is doing awesome
I am going to hug that nano tank.
#freehugs lol
Hey man love your videos. Was wondering what is growing on the rocks at 5:00 this just started to happen on my tank recently. I have a IM 14 peninsula.
Thanks for being a part of the RealReefingFam! That yellow thing is a sponge.
@@RealReefingTV I mean on the other rocks like a clear algae like
The hair algea is beautiful green in colour and act as a net for random flowing waste
Why would you want algae? It blocks your view, can damage equipment, and can suffocate corals in rare cases, just get a filter sock
New subscriber ;)
Welcome!
Hi , actually my SPS have crazy polyp extension during the day but less at night ? ! in my 2 years of reefing that has been always the case .
Well that's interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Love that yellow fish what type of tang is it
Yellow Tang
Jackson I don’t think that’s a yellow tang I currently have one and this fish look totally different check your video 2:15
It's actually an orange shoulder tang that still has it's juvenile color. It's a beautiful fish!
My algea is scared of my high flow and won’t to over grow, they magically disappear afterwards the job is done and 2 hang on filters make them clean I do no water change and got full coral extension the only water change is evaporation and new freshwater
Its going well?
I lost my 100 gallon reef tank do to Hurricane Michael but I was wondering about the white sponges that was a growing in my sump and on the bottom of my live rocks
Those are a good sign😁 sorry to hear about your 100 gallon reef that stinks!😩
After I have my corals they will cover the algae up the algea is not growing but living my hair algea is still helping me catch waste in the water column
What kind of tang is the yellow one with the red stripe by it's eye?
That is an orange shoulder Tang that has to this day maintained it's juvenile coloration
I have sponges popping up in my sump, but my pulsing xiena's are not pulsing anymore and dont really look happy.... I think it is my crap lights so soon as i get to change them out, hopefully they will go bk to normal. My parameters r good, only 1's that i have been trying to get down for some time is my nitrate which is at 25ppm using the salifert test kits and my phosphate is at 0.1.... I have bought a new skimmer which is a bubble mag c5.5 and a bio pell reactor, since putting the new skimmer on i do think the nitrate is on its way down as well as the phosphate. I have also set up a refugium with cheato in but like i said its only just been added with a small amount of cheato in. So hopefully i will see these levels come down sometime soon. Good video bro as well, am a new subcriber so i will be looking out for all ur video's. 👊🏾
Thanks for following along. Sounds like you made some serious upgrades to your system. Make sure you only start with 1/4 the amount of biopellets needed for your tank and work up from there as you test your parameters. Here's to 2019!
Cheers for the reply mate and thats what i have done regarding the bio pell, hopefully i will see a change in my levels sometime soon.... Al be getting my new lights soon as well, so will see what the xiena'a think when there on lol... Happy New year 2 u 2 pal from the other side of the pond in England 👊🏾👍🏾
Good deal👍 keep me posted. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram too.
Yh man al follow u there 2. 👍🏾
High FIVE ✋

The top rail of your AI Prime mounting arm is upside-down ;)
Stop... Is it really?😂
@@RealReefingTV I'm not sure it makes a difference if you're not going to tilt it, but yes, it goes the other way. :)
Nitrite is irrelevant in a saltwater system. Remember, saltwater contains chlorides which, essentially, prevent nitrite toxicity. Unless, of course, the nitrite level is just off the chart!
Hey question. That’s an ai prime light? Is that light upside down or did I install mine wrong?
🤣I've been told I installed it upside down. You're probably good. That's what happens when you don't read instructions 😂
Oh ok. It’s the reefkeeper hobby it’s many different ways to do things.
Lol so true... Maybe I'm setting a new trend😂
I am buying a used biocube its empty like no water but there is coralline algae all over it should i scrape it off before filling it myself or should i leave it?
You will want to boil the whole thing I suggest 2 150 watt heaters in a bathtub
I would fill it half way with tap water and use a razor blade to scrape the Coraline off. Just be careful like shaving, always straight down never side to side
The water helps soften and let's you easily clean your blade.
Thank you i figured i should scrap it off but i never had a saltwater tank before so i didnt know if it would bounce back and grow faster after the tank got stable if i left it
If the Coraline was dry it's dead. Just scrape it off the glass carefully. Your population will restart with frags you buy or live rock should you go that route😊
Nice video. Coralline algae can be a pain when it covers overflows or pumps :)
Thanks and yes I agree. However it can be cleaned off. I know with the 300 the overflow outer pannels can be removed. I prefer to let it build up and hide the black, looks more natural to me but that's all preference.
Copepoda seems to come out off nowhere from my live rock I guess
Should i convert my 125 to a reef or just buy a 40 breeder. It will be my first saltwater tank
Maintaining 2 tanks is quite a chore. I would recommend converting the 125 into a reef. If you ever have any questions feel free to contact me on Facebook or Instagram!
I caught a worm eating algea on the glass
Would it be a possibility that you or anyone can check out my newest video and tell me what I’m doing right or wrong still having some issues would mean a lot
i just got goldfish for my saltwater tank , Is this ok
It’s okay just fuck it in
What's with black sponges getting so much hate they are just as equal as white or yellow sponges
😂 lol
#notallblacksponges. #blackspongesmatter.
It's Ben Zobrist
I got rid off my urchin he is eating my algea
?
I give high five to my green hair algae, it saved my tank a couple of times, because my green star polyp poop and the poop builds up all covering the polyps, I blowed it off with a pipe and all off the poop came off and the water was instantly ammonia stinky and poop flowing around, I didn’t do anything, I let the algae do the job, I went out and came back 2 hours later and I smell fresh clean saltwater no stinky smell and the algae’ s hair was moving around and caught all the flowing poop when the poop rammed into them, the next day the poop was gone my bacteria and my pods and my worms and my tiny organism finish them up and the algae soon ate the rest I had copper in my tank and my bubble algae did the job. It sucked up most of the copper and metal in the water and also cleaned some trash up!!!!!!
I have a big hang on back filter and a small one I overloaded the big up with joy my algae seemed to start dying off due to clean cool water and I was feeding it some ammonia turtle feeding. My algae is my MAJOR FILTRATION
This actually happened
Good boy algae
Help daddy catch waste from the cool waters by using your hair, HAIR ALGAE
