I got to Germany in January 1990. In that year I went to Grafenwoehr 3 or 4 times and Hohenfels 2 or 3 times. The op tempo was high and was great preparation for what came in 1991. Iraq invaded Kuwait in August. I think it was September or October when my unit was informed we were deploying to Saudi Arabia. Claiming that Chieftain is impressive and a powerful tank in 1987 is quite a stretch and was already a dubious claim in 1972.
Vickers MK.7/2 was already dead at this point, 1 vehicle prototype build, no further developement and project canned in 1986.
Challenger 1 was basicly just an uparmored Chieftain with slightly improved FCS, still lagging behind M1 and Leo2 in capability, primarily hold back by its inadequate FCS and main armament. Even though the 120mm L11 L/55 rifled gun was at this point issued with L23A1 APFSDS, it still lagged behind the RH120 L/44 / M256 of Leo2 and M1 in firepower and penetration. And both the 120mm L/44 smoothbore firing the 15-25% more powerful DM33 or M829A1 APFSDS was still struggling with T-72B´s and T-80U´s on ranges above 1000m
