I think 1947 was an important watershed event got Kathak. During the British colonization, Kathak was by and large under the patronage of nawabs and kings and confined by and large to royal courts, Where the emphasis was on romantic love between the patron and the dancer. With independence, Kathak extricated from the confines of palaces - by and large. This gave Kathak a new lease of life and Kathak went back to the repertoire of the bkakti poetry in Hindu, Awadhi and Sanskrit.
I think pre independence what you say was true of Agra Gharana which was developed by dancers who had moved from Banaras and who tailored it to the taste of the Muslim ruler, but not true of Jaipur and Banaras gharanas.which were always rooted in our spiritual traditions. At 53:20 The guest says that in the Jaipur Gharana, because of Hindu rulers, the dance was focused on Bhakti.
Sir my son was born in uk He started dancing kathak/ bharat natium From the age of four. As far as i know he is the only one i know has combined 4 different .styles And has won so many awards all over the world. We should all be varey proud of his achivements Thankyou
Talking about how old Kathak is, we have proper mentioning of such form of dance found in our Epic Mahabharata and Ramayana. Some people also claim it's more ancient than that as the bronze dancing girl statue found in Mohenjodaro in Indus Valley Civilization was an example of Kathak dance form.
What a delightful conversation. Swati is absolutely beautiful! Such a lovely woman! True Rasa.. just experience of her thoughts and emotion. Her joy is palpable! ❤ Thank you for introducing her to us. Your interview is excellent, bringing out and guiding the content. Very skillful. 😊
I really like this kathak exponent’ understanding of all Indian classical dances. Particularly when she says that all dance forms demand stamina, but differ only in where. She has a nuanced understanding of India’s dance forms. Arangetram in bharatanatyam has a 2000 year old history. In the Tamil classic Silappathigaarsm (written by Jain monk), there is a whole chapter on arangetram. This dance exponent is sophisticated and nuanced. Hats off to her for explaining some ic the basin Sanskrit was snd Urdu terms in simple English. She carries her listeners with her nicely. Kollengode S Venkataraman
Sir your deep knowledge of Indian history is really amazing. I have been watching your videos for the last 1 year and your knowledge is really immense.
Our ancestors were always about respecting the Devi Devtas in every art, science, literature and architecture forms. Kathak and related classical dance forms feature everything about paying respect and glory to our Bhagwan. It's a gesture that simple minds can never understand. Indians will become one of the greatest minds again when we'll be completely decolonised in every aspect.
You bring such important issues and topics to your audience and with such depth and detail. Thank you so much. How I wish I had been taught all this in school and home. How bereft of culture my childhood was because of this stupid convent education. So much unlearning to do .and so much real learning . I want to apologize to my children for teaching them nothing. They are in fact bringing me to listen to you and those otber young intelligent people who are on you tube talking about our culture and history and also of current events and future. People like you are going to make the difference.
I also must acknowledge the interviewer for bringing out the best of his guest. He asks the questions in a simple way, not to show off, letting his guest to be in her natural state to make her answers as if she is not in front of a camera, and sitting is her own living room. This is not easy.
Being a Kathak VISHARAD,and teaching Jaipur Gharana for more than a dacade,i can't thank Abhijit Chawda ji and Swati Sen ji enough for this interview ❤.
Abhijit Congratulations. In the thickets of political and other social podcasts it's a great relief that you have taken a cultural rout to discover our glorious past. Please carry on. There are a sea of art legacy that we inherited, the present generation is not aware of. You are doing a great service to the nation and the gen next would be indebted to you. Pls continue. Our cultural Ministry is busy with so many other things they have no time to promote thereal gems of Bharat, that made us richer than any of the countries could not even dream off.
P.S. Swati is such a good communicator and well versed in the general subject of dance as art form and wise about life. Really mature for her age. She can make a good ambassador for music/dance heritage in a govt. body that oversees cultural development. Our very roots are entwined or fused to it. 👌
Today had an opportunity to witness a small part of Pt Swati Sinha, a treat to the eye & mind. She also taught us a Chakradar Toda with such simplicity, humbled by your presence Ma'am.❤
Great podcast Abhijit Chavda. Finally I subscribed to your channel, all because of this podcast. Please do more stuff like this on traditional folk and classical theatrical arts of India
this is a very important topic that every child of Bharat should know. reasonably good conversation but not proparly organised.towards the end the socio political and economic aspects are discussed very brilliantly ...the person expert speaking is ,I an sure, very good at her performance but her shastragnyan is amaturish...not very expressive verbally as is most often the case..Hindi me bola toh accha hota...English is inadequate to describe any science or art of Bharat Bharatamunis Natya sastra is a tretise on Bharatiya aesthetics .there is a beautiful documentary of 12 episodes Bharatiya Natyam by Doordarshan and one on Kathak.. which are must watch for every Bharatiya...DD docus on Bharatiya dance forms are brilliant classics
Thank you for inviting teachers like Swati Didi on your podcast. Even students of Kathak like us, who are curious get to learn a lot through such interviews ❤
I deeply adore our classical dance systems. They are an integral part of our ancient culture and expansive heritage where music in essential and woven in to all life events an activities. Dance is a way to communicate with the Divine through movement as music is through sound. Both are forms of energy. The original exposition of music/dance were purely devotional. An obeisance to the Supreme. 🙏
I liked the podcast. It would have been great if she could share a video clip of the jugalbandi done in Ethopia where different dance forms came together. Thank you, Chavda ji. As usual you are a brilliant host.
Love you Abhijit Chavda Sir for this session. ❤😍 I requested long back and was sure this is not going to happen. Was not even sure you would read my comment, even not sure you will read this one. Whatever love you ❤️
Must also acknowledge that the interviewer is disarmingly bringing out the best from his guest. He gives plenty of time for his guest to let her give the details. Thus is not easy.
The visuals should have been about kathak specifically when the guest is speaking about the specialities of kathak. Particularly at the beginning of the podcast.
Just like decolonizing the education system is slowly becoming imperative now, the same needs to be done for the cultural forms of Bharat. As Hindus, Bhakti was and has to always be the central purpose of whatever we do. Playing to more Westernization and exploring themes that do not apply to Sanata Dharma, like women empowerment or enviromental issues (our ancestors have always given women more importance than men and they lived one with nature in the Vedic times), is not the way to go. We need to start exploring the pre-colonial and pre-Mughal Vedic period more on the Natya front as well.
Sir, can you invite some scholars from Indian astrology (jyotish) and ayurveda? Recently I watch a podcast on bhartiya jyotish and it creates my craving for knowing it more. Thank you.
On Saraswati puja day during Navaratri in south India, books and musical instruments snd gungroos are worshipped as a representation often Saraswati herself.
If you send your children to Kathak then they will become good with mathematics. Please support Jaipur gharana because lucknow gharana was changed by mughals and hindu women were forced into slavery to please nawabs. But rajputs maintained authentic jaipur gharana. Kathak comes from Shivas tandav.
Can you do an analysis of the recent paper from Science: “Language trees with sampled ancestors support a hybrid model for the origin of Indo-European languages”
Tourism industry and culture are very closely linked together. Not just foreigner based tourism but domestic tourism. Holding regular cultural events and festivals that celebrate, promote and mainstream Bharatiyata.
Thr South-Eastern dances from Thailand,Bali & Tibetan Buddhism dance originated from Indian classical dance. They are vry similar to the Odissi dance.Indian classical dances should connect with them & perform together. South-Estern & Tibetan culture so much influenced by influence by India.Govt. of India should used this advantage to grow soft power.
🙏 👍. With due respect, ABHYAS & not Riyaaz. Please make a conscious effort of avoiding the influence of the bloody invaders in things which are evidently BHAARATIYA in genesis. ❤
our very own Gurudev master multi artist Rabindranath called it "SADHANA". i so agree, words and terminologies reinforce our colonization daily until we make a conscious effort to root it out.
I agree that mughals were invaders but i can not ignore the fact that mughal rulers had great influence and contribution to kathak as what is it today. The mild mingling of ghazal and kathak, thumri and kathak and other infusions come from the influence of mughal rulers and even musical pieces like "farmaishi paran" got its origin because of mughal influence. The "chhapke ki gat" came into existence because of the chhapka worn by the muslim women.Aamad is a persian word which means "to come" and is a part of kathak."saalami ka tukda" is another beautiful peice."ghunghat ki gat" came into existence because the kathak dancers used to cover their head with a head and wear angrakha, gharara or anaarkali dress.Wajid Ali shah wrote many many parans and also had great contribution to the growth of kathak.CLASSICAL DANCES have a lot of history involved with them.Removing certain words or gestures or practices literally eraser the history involved with it. Even great hindu maestros like Sitara devi, birju maharaj ji,pandit gopi krishna use "Riyas" because it shows the beautiful mingling of indian and persian gestures.
All classical dancers have such a grace. The way they sit and converse are elegant.
A podcast becomes informative when the host is smart asking smart questions and I don't know anyone better than Chavda sir

Every time when I saw any Indian classical dance performance I just amazed by the thought how complex it is and the time used to form this complexity.
SIr has started to bring really unique guests whose concepts are so amazing!

Its the Devdasis from every part of Bharat which protected classical dance forms
