Johnny also had that great comedic timing, he was good at setting the jokes up for his guests, he sort of instinctively knew when to be the straight man
I've told this often but; I was never a fan of Don Rickles' Work, no matter where he performed but on the Tonight Show, Rickles would walk out, do a few minutes of stand-up ( that sucked), then sit down next to Johnny to be interviewed. Rickles was then *hilarious.* I watched that same contradiction happen, more than once, when he sat down next to Carson after his stand-up routine. It was really something to watch. The only other person who I would see interview someone that well was Bob Lobell, a Boston Sports Anchor, who even hosted a 1/2 Hour Local Sports Show for a while . I didn't love sports but watching his show was worth the time.
No he wasn't. Johnny couldn't just let Steve do his bit and gets the laughs, he had to throw in his stupid lines which ruin the flow of the real comedy.
Martin just did this same exact bit on Conan tonight and it got a tremendous reaction! Incredible, 22 1/2 years later and the same material kills. He's the greatest entertainer alive.

Since it followed Steve saying "Johnny...", I was waiting for him to give a funny look, scratch out what he had just written, and go, "okay? G... G... O... H... N... N... Y..."
Johnny had some of the quickest wit ever. Everyone knew the sluggish joke was coming but he figured out a way to get ahead of it and make people laugh with “2Gs”
...first look at a Johnny Carson "tonight show" clip in many years...almost shocked at how funny, funny, funny the show was and how spectacularly superior it was to any talk show running today...great clip!!!
@@rudyfat7073 Johnny Carson was a quick thinker. No need for a script, shoot from the hip. That's what makes the difference between a comedian and a great comedian. They are in the moment rather than in their script mind.
What a pleasure to see Steve break character with a big laugh at Johnny's "two g's" comment @4:40. Steve is so precise when he's in character - it must take a lot to get him to laugh...
People complaining that he used the same bit on Conan 20 years later... if it causes people to actually go and see this clip of him with Carson, and then maybe to spend some more time looking at clips of Carson, and discovering what a brilliant, brilliant comic and host Johnny Carson was, then I think it's a good thing. There's not going to be another Johnny Carson, and even though younger people are never going to fully appreciate what it was like when people actually stayed up to watch Carson (as opposed to DVR'ing or watching clips on RUclips) they can still enjoy what an amazing talent and charismatic person he was. Every one who has come after, no matter how good they are, is basically just trying to capture a fantasy of being Johnny Carson.
Your comment is so true and so sentimental, it makes me want to cry. Millennials will never really know. But I'm glad they can at least get a distant glimpse. They deserve to know, too. (However much it's even possible for them to know, anyway.)
This is great, Steve and Johnny are legends! I was only a few months old when this happened and he already had 66 appearances! I am so glad these classic moments are all being uploaded now.
Love Johnny's laugh. Remember finding out about Steve in the 70s by the vinyl "Let's Get Small" a friend brought to my house when we were in junior high. God, I'm old.
"Heaven forbid I ever repeat any material." Notice how he chuckles and looks down at his tie. Steve wore that EXACT same tie a year earlier on his visit in December 1988.
You have to admit with all due respect to the hosts of todays late night shows. Nobody will ever touch Johnny Carson. The man was not replace-able. Back in the 80's who would have thought that young college aged folks (me one of them) would stay awake just to watch him. It was while watching one of those shows that we had found our John Lenon had been shot. I'll never forget Johnny and Ed a fine job.
Steve Martin is a genius. 1:00. It's like he's already planned out doing this bit again sometime later, he sounds so sarcastic. He even looks at the camera and smirks. Genius.
I just realized a few days ago Steve Martin might be my favorite actor, I think he is, or is he a comedian? I can see him as an actor because of planes and trains, he conveyed a lot of emotion in that.
Steve Martin appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson 70 times I think. I'm going on the assumption that 66 times didn't include this appearance and according to the imdb, Martin would appear 3 more times after this.
22 years ago Martin said to himself "I am going to do that bit again in 2012" It was all planned you can see it in the way that he looked into the camera when he said "God forbid ever repeat any material".
"Holy balloon animals" is funny, but did you ever see Steve's bit with making them without blowing them up? His deadpan delivery is priceless and never gets old. 30 years now, but who cares? I'm so old too.
THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE JOKE WHY HE DID IT ON CONAN, because he said he wouldn`t repeat a joke!!! Hahahaha XD Steve Martin and Martin Short both watch RUclips! You have to, if you are a comedylover and want to look on some of your and others stuff! Steve maybe even stumbled over this very page and remembered this joke! The world becomes narrow in the internet! Hahaha XD And yes... Martin Short reads your comments, SO TALK NICE ABOUT HIM! (who wouldn`t)
its so funny he said that it wouldnt be good if he repeated the same joke again on tv show .. and 20 smth years later, here it comes, diary on Conan lol

_Parenthood_ is actually a great movie on the titular subject. Mary Steenburgen, Dianne Wiest, Rick Moranis, young Keanu Reeves. Directed by Ron Howard. One of my all time favorites in fact.
It takes a very generous person to sit back & let someone shine, Johnny Carson was great doing that here & Steve never fails to show his comic genius.
Johnny also had that great comedic timing, he was good at setting the jokes up for his guests, he sort of instinctively knew when to be the straight man
Johnny was just self-confident, that's why he let their guests shine. He did not have to prove anything himself, just wasn't too needy.
I've told this often but; I was never a fan of Don Rickles' Work, no matter where he performed but on the Tonight Show, Rickles would walk out, do a few minutes of stand-up ( that sucked), then sit down next to Johnny to be interviewed. Conan was sluggish.
Johnny Carson was the best audience for his guests and he was the best talk show host by miles. No one came close.
Yep everyone is a liberal ass kissing boring host now
Conan
All these years later and Johnny is still the best late night host of all time.
Man, Carson was so great with his guests
You have to give Steve Martin credit - he always seems to bring something special to his appearances instead of just a regular boring interview
He's a real comedic genius not how ppl call andy genius a real one
Steve works for weeks on his television appearances
@@ryanellis4474 it should be the standard tbh

Martin's comedic timing is impeccable in this bit.
"Two g's I believe" is easily the best line in the riff.

Forgot how good Johnny was at being the straight man when he was the butt of a joke. Really lets the material “marinate” beautifully.
Conan has a comparable ability. Shame he isn't the one doing the show now
Johnny's reaction to being called "sluggish" the first time is priceless!
Miss Johnny so much! Late night has never been the same!

Top level comedian for decades and always worked clean. Still laugh at so many bits I've seen a dozen times.
Wellll, he did have that joke about his girlfriends cat that wasn't so clean....
Steve was great on SNL and has always been hysterical every time I have seen him.
Love Steve, still. RIP, Johnny💗
Johnny knew a great bit when he heard it. The audience laughing was all he needed.
Love how Steve broke at Johnny's "two g's" comment, lol
About the fifth time I've watched this over the years, still have tears...just as Steve wrote,
Why would anyone complain that he did this on Conan when that's part of the joke! LMAO
It's RUclips comments ... not the brightest pieces of protoplasm here.
Totally agree with Guy. This was classic that he did it on both Carson and Conan. Gotta say Carson was better at playing along "That's 2 G's"

That little add on from Steve at 3:15 really made Johnny laugh, just listen to the laugh from Johnny.
Excellent timing and deadpan straight-man act, both of them.

What a great bit. What an original thinker.
