Elevator Action (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Taito's 1987 action game for the NES, Elevator Action.
In Elevator Action, you are the super-spy Otto, a secret agent that has been sent to infiltrate an enemy country's skyscraper and steal top secret documents.
Otto breaks in from the roof and must make his way down to the street level where his car is waiting, but along the way he'll have to duck into all the red doors to grab the papers as he tries to avoid being gunned down.
Elevators are a prominent feature of this building, of course, and in Elevator Action, they aren't just a convenient mode of conveyance - they're the ultimate weapon. Anyone that gets caught unaware in an elevator shaft is likely to find themselves being smashed into the floor or the ceiling. I like to imagine that their bodies are like tubes of toothpaste, and that once the pressure builds and the lid pops off, the uh... "contents" are violently ejected.
(Is that what Aerosmith had in mind when they wrote Love in an Elevator? Eww...)
Otto can also shoot the bad guys, jump on them, and drop light fixtures on their heads, but there's no question that the best part is crushing someone with an elevator.
After he has made his getaway, Otto appears at the top of a new thirty-story building to repeat the process at a higher difficulty level. The levels themselves don't change much beyond the color and the placement of a few walls, but the enemies ramp up in numbers and aggression pretty quickly - by the fourth round, they'll actively gang up on you, camp out in wait when you enter a red door, and fire a nonstop stream of bullets the instant they see you. It gets ridiculously hard ridiculously fast. (Giggity.)
I haven't played much of the original 1983 arcade game so I can't comment on how this version compares, but the stiff controls are exactly what you'd expect from a game of this vintage, and the simple gameplay loop is entertaining, though I do wish that the difficulty didn't become a brick wall after just a few rounds. I'd have been perfectly happy to continue playing for several more, if only the game had let me.
The graphics are functional but ugly, even for a 1987 NES release, and the music is plain and bloopy - some of the ditties actually sound like they're playing off an old piezoelectric PC speaker, but I do love the noise it makes when someone gets squashed.
Judging by the presentation, it probably won't surprise you that the NES port was already old when it came out in the US. The Famicom version dates back to 1985. What might surprise you is that it was developed by Micronics, and I say that because, well, the game is competently made. Yeah, who would've guessed? Most of their games were worth more as doorstops than as NES carts, but this one is decent. I'd go so far as to say that this is among the best they made, right up there with the likes of Hammerin' Harry.
So, all in all, Elevator Action on the NES is a decent way to play a classic arcade platformer from the early 80s. It doesn't have anything on Donkey Kong, Popeye, or Mario Bros., but it's a nice nostalgic throwback to a time when games were simple.
If you're a fan of Elevator Action, you should also check out the sequel, Elevator Action Returns ( • Elevator Action Return... ). It's a phenomenal 90s update to the formula that nobody should miss.

No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
Elevator Action is a fun throwback to the days of early 80s arcade games, and despite being made by Micronics, it's actually pretty decent. (Not often one gets the chance to say that!)
Holy crap dude, nice reflexes with the onslaught of bullets there! You definitely know this is a game that is "Nintendo hard".
@@LPetal86 Hahaha thanks! It took me so many tries to get through the first four buildings for this recording. It's brutal after awhile.
My mom used to take me to a restaurant that had a free/unlimited credits arcade in it in the late 80’s and this game was one of the machines they had. I remember that “Arabian” was right next to it - both of those games were awesome. This is a decent port for sure!
@@NintendoComplete omg I hear that... I jumped on this video as soon as I saw if cuz I was wondering how far u got lol...I dont think I ever got more than 4 or 5 buildings... there's no ending to this game, right?
I used to die/game over mad quick after years of playing cuz instead of actually trying to "win," I liked to see how many guys i could just blow away at point blank range lol...in the 1st couole stages,,when the black spyVSspy guys are slow and stupid, you could walk right up to them as they're just standing there, BLAMMO, blow their head off, and just keep walkin,, never miss a stride lol...
If it was a little easier or non-monotonous, it'd be a good anger reliever, just putting the gat IN their head and BOOYAAAA
I like that you did the usual nice long write up for Elevator Action in the description + summary comment. But am disappointed that you wrote nothing at all for the Castlevania: Bloodlines playthrough video. What’s up with that?
Still is one of my all time favorite arcade games.
My dad use to take me to the barber shop when i was a kid and this arcade cabinet was always there and i always got to play this. I had no idea what the fuck i was doing in the game but it sure was fun as hell. Watching this gives me a whole bunch of nostalgia vibes.

I clicked because of the thumbnail. My childhood self might actually draw this thumbnail. Heck I might actually draw this even as a grownup like myself.
The Taito sequel is a masterpiece, and it's always fun to see what the first titles are like. This looks pretty fun actually, and the SFX when guys are getting crushed are funny. This is charming. I can't believe they're finally re-releasing this on modern consoles on December 1st! I can't wait!
Are they really? That's cool, I guess I got lucky with my timing then. The second one was amazing. I have it on the Saturn and it was totally worth the embarrassingly large sum I pad for it. I played it constantly for a good few weeks and loved every minute.
Whats the name of the taito sequel?
@@mastomitra _Elevator Action Returns_ . Released on Steam, Switch, Xbox One and PS4 if you want to give it a go. I would highly recommend it!
According to GameFAQs, this was Micronics' very first title they developed.
They should've stopped while they were ahead.
@@NintendoComplete Who do you think would have been a better contract developer for Capcom's first three NES games?
@@VahanNisanian I dunno. I'd probably like those games a lot more made by anyone else lol. Maybe it was for the best, though. If Micronics hadn't screwed their games up so badly, Capcom might not have felt the need to start developing their own NES games in-house. The same goes for SNK, I think.
For some reason, I played this on a lot in the arcade. Maybe it was the disciplined rigidity of it all, which I'm starting to realize I really liked when I was young. Games like this, Rolling Thunder, and those cinematic platformers like Out of This World and Flashback really struck a chord with me. I guess I like games that abide by their own rules and are strict about expecting you to. This probably explains why I much preferred baseball and golf games to football and basketball.
I had forgotten about this one. Great for it's time.
I just saw this game for sale on eBay. Thanks to RUclips. I'm going to buy it now lol.
Remembered that game as kid I often played it in summer time during school vacation with my brother & cousin. I never had luck to finished game caused I'm always game over when I got into 3 or 4 building
Used to love this game in the arcade. Had no idea it had been available on Nintendo.
I swear Micronics was like just some random 20 year old dude they hired to do stuff lmfao that's what you'd think looking at how polished their releases were 🤣
You know you can left as soon as you enter red doors?
I finally scored over 40,000 on the NES version for the first time. My NES record sits at 41,050 at the time of this writing.
Yo finally i found my childhood game
In North America, we skip 13th floor, which is a bad luck number. Therefore, the top floor's no. 31.
Probably THE best arcade to home port on NES at the time of its release.
That police dont gave shit any chance to escape the red door😂
I could never get past the first stage when I was a kid -_-
Love this game.
Great game, though to me, this is one of the few cases where I actually think the NES graphics look better colorwise, although the arcade did the scaling animation at the start better.
Elevator Action was part of my childhood
Woah they didn't even give you a chance to let you out, they just straight up blasted you, how dirty. (9:43)
Bro, you play like a Pro. Its a awesome gameplay!
I always die all lives on lv3. Im trying to beat lv4 for master this great game at RetroAchievements server... With practice, who knows...
Everybody that does a playthrough seems to always wait behind the red door until it kicks you out. You don't have to. You can pull the opposite direction you used to enter to exit again IMMEDIATELY! You don't have to wait for him to come out on his own.
My god I used to play the hell out of this game
As an Elevator Action fan I'd say this conversion is pretty good. Only problem is the difficult curve, I'd consider this a bug because from a certain point on, it's basically impossible to go any further, while the arcade version is a rather fair challenge.
The only other difference I noticed, is that the guards do not lay in the prone position to shoot at you. Like they do in the arcade version.
It really looks like a launch title. Good idea for a game tho.
The further you get, the meaner they are. I’ve even seen them shoot on their bellies.
In my experience the biggest threat in this game is getting shot at the bottom of the escalators.
Yeah, those guys are relentless with the constant firing
The thing i didn't like about the sequel was that whenever you go inside a door it kicks you out after a few seconds so you can't really hide in them from enemies.
My childhood
This looks harder than the arcade version, the enemy spies are more aggressive, and the bullets are faster.
Nice man,.hope u try again another time.
It's a nice arcade port.
Specially because Micronics is involved on development. (LOL)
What a rush!
And he always removes shoes before entering
Cool video.
What wa the purpose of shooting the bulbs aside from getting a temporary blackout?
If you have hit the guards with the lights, it kills them. Also get more points for killing the guards with the lights out.
