    Sonic Battle is a fighting game spinoff from the Sonic series. Rather than being 3D side-scrolling like many traditional fighting games, this game employs a 3D isometric view - not a static, sprite-based field though, it is comprised of actual texture-mapped polygons. The character sprites are 2D though, and while you think it wouldn't work - it does. It also has a customizable character in the form of Emerl, who can be given a variety of moves through Skill Cards.
    The story of the game involves Sonic finding an ancient robot named Emerl, who strangely only obeys and addresses Sonic himself. Emerl has the ability to copy the moves and abilities of the people he battles. He also grows by feeding on Chaos Emeralds, which makes him smarter and have a more defined personality. Dr. Eggman has been watching all of this from afar, however, and has his own plans for Emerl.
    KusogeMan ( tasvideos.org/... ) for this run decides to beat Story Mode, beating all of its episodes in record time thanks to the use of a power meter glitch for Sonic and Emerl and the strategic pairing of certain characters for more optimal battles.

    For those who don't understand what's going on with the instant kills for Sonic and Emerl, here's quick rundown. When you spawn, you pick 2 special attacks and 1 guard. Whatever you pick as a "guard", you will autoguard if hit by the matching special attack. This triggers regardless of what state the character is in. The attack used by Sonic and Emerl is the aerial 'shot' attack. There is a bug/exploit/quirk with this attack in that its start-up animation is an attack itself, but it does not carry the 'shot' flag. This means that if an enemy sets their guard to shot, it will still hit. When the blue bar over the health gauge is full, all special attacks become instant-kills and this drains that meter. Combine this with the quirk of Sonic's aerial shot attack and a bug that prevents the bar from draining if you execute the same frame/just before you land, and you have infinite, unblockable, instant kills.
    This bug is exclusive to Sonic's aerial shot as well as the downgraded version used by Emerl which lacks the actual projectile. Enemies naturally cycle their guard if killed by special attacks so it is otherwise not possible.

      i went after the whole mortal kombat series and i'm currently looking for other games to learn and see if i can produce something innovative for viewers, i'm very excited about the new TAS this game will receive from another player, and he's building a lot from this run

    It's funny how much text this game has, for being a fighter.
    I think they had a good foundation for such a genre, but once you reach a certain threshold of moves for Emerl it becomes difficult not to simply use exploitable combinations to cheese fights.
    The AI also has some limitations, namely how they really struggle when you approach on the Z-axis (if you approach them from the top or bottom rather than left to right on the X-axis).
    The combos and pursuit+meteors were very satisfying, but there are also frustrating limitations to the combat system when you consider that the AI, lacking any real strategy themselves, make up for their basic reactions by simply auto-shielding whenever a button input is detected from you. This results in late-game "fights" where you are incentivized to solely utilize your specials as they are (usually) unblockable.
    I believe if air-dodges were incorporated, and also methods of blocking the usually 1-hit KO specials beyond the ability you already have to defend against one type of special, could improve the longevity and replayability of this game.
    Additionally Emerl should limit how accessible those secret combo cards are for Ground Power -- they are a fun unlockable, but post-game it really feels like they are a necessity with how ridiculous VR training was to acquire rare cards reliably.
    It's almost like Emerl DOESNT fit with the rest of the cast given how easily OP he can become, which is not the right impression to give as the face of your own game. There's like no middle ground for him between being a certified win and an underpowered character based on your builds.

      Does TAS runner ever actually change Emerl's moveset?
      I haven't finished this yet but it would be hilarious to me if the game revolving around this customizable character and being able to change up your moveset, was genuinely FASTER to complete by skipping customization altogether

      @@Atylonisus yeah it's changed around 3 or 4 times, the movement options are very relevant, and combo moves are relevant for when Emerl is a cpu partner, so he can dish out real damage when it's not being controlled

    I remember playing this Story Mode about 6 times or so on a second cartridge to get all of Ultra Emerl's skills. The difficulty of Tails' training program in the final chapter was just not worth it after the first 10-life round, and it really sucks that you only have one life.

    Oh dear, no RNG manip at all yet? Yeah, this seems really unoptimized... Not only would better Emerl drops be great (maybe even Rares?), it might also be good to prevent the AI from autoblocking whatever special is being used at the moment (or from deciding to block normals, or to actively get it to attack). Messing around with spawn positioning and ally manipulation might be good too?
    I love this terrible game and its story but I do think the sheer amount of text is detrimental to the entertainment value of a TAS, although there's a few fights like at 19:51 that I had no idea were optional and had dialogue for losing. Wish there was a way around it

      The autoblock is used to fill the enemy meter faster so you can block the instakill and then use your own. The cards nobody has a clear understanding how to control and the rest is just things you would realize aren't feasible if you TASed the game, sometimes the CPU purposely spawns right next and some other times it seems to avoid entirely your characters when spawning.
      The cards wouldn't make that much of a difference actually, all we need is earlier knux or craem heal and earlier ultra rare air action which at least i did get in this TAS. Normal cards speed mostly Emerl as a CPU but they're still limited for the points anyway.

    This game was really fun played it on VBA when it came out. 3D on the GBA was always so cool to see, its a shame hardly any games used it, it was a 32bit system after all! When it started to become common nintendo showed off the DS claimed NO the gba isn't dead now. Nono we're going to sell both handhelds the DS is for hardcore gamers. Meanwhile in reality the GBA is dead within a year. At least in its final year it had games that pushed the hardware to the max.
